Terry Syrek: point of presence

News:
01-07-2007:
I love the job that Dave B is doing getting all these interviews from great players...so the next one on the list is Terry Syrek...After Terry Syrek's "Wank Tapping and The Fine Art Of Eating Cheesy Poofs" the instrumenalcase.com team line up a shredding interview.

In answer to the question "What led you to play instrumental music?" Terry Syrek says:
Lack of a band! [Laughs] I'm usually more of a fan of band oriented stuff with vocals, but anyone who has ever been in a band knows it's like being married to three or four other people at the same time. It's very hard to find competent musicians - let alone ones who are actually interested in my type of music, have time to work on things, and share the same relative views on music. So in the meantime I write and record instrumental stuff because I can do most of it myself.

You know you'll have to read an article entitled "Wank Tapping and The Fine Art Of Eating Cheesy Poofs" from Terry Syrek. Check his devastating guitar lessons with tab and mp3 on guitar9...check out an mp3 of what to expect. Plus an interview with Terry Syrek, covering aspects of Focal Dystonia on 22ndcenturyguitarist.blogspot.com

31-03-2006:
Terry Syrek has joined MySpace: www.myspace.com/terrysyrek. You'll need to go there, become his friend, listen to the new demos, for example a new clip up called "Change the World" from his old band. He posted it because he likes the tune alot and it's going to be re done, better, stronger, faster for his upcoming CD which is currently a work in progress.

Also... for those lucky people, Terry teaches in the White Plains area and he has a few openings right now; if you live around the area and are interested, let him know....you won't regret it!

For those outside the area...You can check out his book and DVD "Shred is not dead"

Fresh from a recommendation on Truthinshredding's "recommendations" page, a new lick of paint for the old web site beseeching us to buy this rather exciting release, "Aum", online.

For fans of the "hidden" old design.

22-04-2006:
You can now buy the awesome "Aum" from guitar9:

"Aum is axe ripper Terry Syrek's new album of guitar geek math metal, minus the pretense - kinda like Yngwie meets Meshuggah meets Rush meets Kings X and then goes to an Indian restaurant. Syrek is incredibly gifted, displaying prodigious talent on the guitar as each piece contains assaultive, speedy fretwork and heavy, imaginative rhythm work. Syrek also goes beyond mere pentatonic scales as he tends toward the exotic in his solo and lead work. Syrek borrows flavorings from Indian, Moroccan, Arabic and other cultures to express himself on tracks such as "Shiva", "Mine To Leave Behind", and the furiously paced "Point Of Presence". The guitars on the CD were recorded with two fully functional fingers on the left hand due to a neurological condition known as 'focal dystonia'"

Great news, Terry Syrek has just released his first full-length solo CD entitled "Aum". Terry's long been admired as one of the best of the 'underground shredders' and with 'Aum' you will see why.

What is all the more amazing is that he suffers from a neurological condition called 'focal dystonia', which means he only has two fully functional left hand fingers with which to create his amazing runs. You won't notice though, because Terry has compensated, adding amazing tapping and other self-patented techniques to create a truly exemplorary soundscape.

I urge anyone even remotely interested in great guitar-driven music to buy this album immediately. I can't recommend Terry and his music highly enough.

Background:
Terry Syrek is one of those genius guitar players that you wish would release music more regularly. He became aware of guitar from the age of four and although asking for lessons his parents decided against this option.

By the age of twelve, he heard Randy Rhoads for the first time and from that point he began learning and transcribing Randy and other hot guitar players licks from Gary Moore and Angus Young.

He then embarked on learning classical music practicing up to fifteen hours a day. He also took up piano lessons. The hard work paid off and Terry attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, studying modern and traditional harmony, arranging, counterpoint, ear training and sight reading. He also taught students privately.

In 1989, he taught advanced rock guitar at Duquesne University's summer program in Pittsburgh, PA. He became a a senior faculty member and and graduated from Berklee with a Bachelor of Music degree.

Since then he has appeared in countless magazines, fanzines and played sessions fro TV series and TV commercials.

Check his web site for a more complete and witty bio. Also there are some great features on the excellent essential guitarist and lessons.

You can also buy the rare chopsfromhell release unearthed arcana and sample some chopsfromhell lessons. You could also read the Guitar Heroes interview and listen to his own mp3. Then when your done, buy the Shred is Not Dead book and video!
