Part 2 of the interview with Brett Garsed... next part 3... A taster as Brett talks abour Scott Henderson:

Only Scott; at MI I would often be teaching on a Tuesday, and so would Scott: so if I had a spare hour I would often go and sit in on his lessons to try and learn something. I would always say to myself I’ve got to go and have a jam with him, because if I don’t it’s going to be one of those things I’m going to regret. Luckily Scott was very cool and said "Yeah, come and have a jam - what do you want to play?"

We ended up playing over a couple of chord progressions from Quid Pro Quo, or something - and someone recorded it. TJ and I listened back to the cassette, and the things Scott was doing - I think he responded to me playing a million and one notes. And he just flew - he has an enormous amount of technique but rarely reveals it and it was just a never ending, bottomless pit of great ideas. Of course, nowadays he just wants to play the blues in his own unique way. He is the blues guitarist for the 21st century.

Brett says:

Like Shawn Lane, Brett Garsed was heavily motivated by UK

I had a really good mate who worked in a record shop - remember I grew up on a farm, and the nearest town only had about 4000 people (I think it's still only got 4000 people actually!) - and so I used to trek over there and go into the only record shop in this rural town and say to my mate "You've got to find me this album by a band called UK" - and he'd say "I'm on it!" - and about a week later he'd have it! He sort of took it as a personal challenge to find any obscure album that I was after.

and like me... that Yngwie moment...

Soon after this we used to have one day a month when we'd hit all the import record shops in Melbourne, which was the nearest big city. One day we walked in and they'd just put this track on, and of course it was that nylon string classical intro to ‘Black Star'. And as soon as that opening arpeggio kicked in...I walked straight up to the counter, threw a twenty down and said "I'll take it!" And that was it!

Sometime I think we must be the same people... except he got all the guitar talent...
but in a parallel universe... I get all the chops!

30-01-2007:
Thanks to Rich Murray for spotting this news: Keyboardist Derek Sherinian has posted a message on the official Planet X forum regarding the long-awaited new Planet X album. The album will be called "Quantum", and should be released this summer. Allan Holdsworth appears on 2 tracks - "The Thinking Of Stones" and "Desert Girl". Bassist Jimmy Johnson is on the album as well, playing on "She Tyranny", "Poland" and "Alien Hip Hop".

Rich says:
I'm a little surprised that Holdsworth only plays on 2 songs. It originally appeared that Holdsworth would have a more prominent role on the album. Then we learned Brett Garsed plays on a few songs. Now it looks like Garsed is the main guitarist, with Holdsworth playing on just 2 tracks as a "guest". This album has been in the works for a long time now, but it should be worth the wait.

01-03-2005: Brett has released a new instructional DVD

Background:
Brett Garsed really needs no introduction to those in the legato fusion guitar world. Brett Garsed was born in rural Victoria, Australia and began playing guitar at age 12 after hearing Deep Purple's Ritchie Blackmore play "Speed King".

His main early influences were Richie Blackmore, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, David Gilmour and Jimi Hendrix, Leo Kottke, Rory Gallagher and Edward Van Halen.

Brett's evolved into legato playing whcih was further driven by hearing Allan Holdsworth and more fusion orientated music. His playing brought him to the attention of Mike Varney's spotlight column, which lead to him winning the gig with John Farnham. He went onto be the guitarist with Nelson.

He is known for his work with TJ Helmerich (essential guitarist interview) and their releases: "Quid Pro Quo", "Exempt" and "Under the lash of gravity" for the now defunct Mark Varney Legato label. Perhaps the most noticable is his work from this period for the Legato label is that of Centrifugal Funk which also featured Shawn Lane and Frank Gambale. He has since recorded a solo album "Big Sky" and Uncle Moe's Space Ranch.

Check out his web site for a full biography and discograpy

If you want to hear more Brett also has some great sound files.

  1. Great to see Brett getting some much-deserved recognition here! I just wanted to point out though that links here to pages on Brett's website are incorrect. Nearly all the pages on Brett's site are PHP-based now, should end with a ".php" extension instead of ".html" (eg, news.php, not news.html).

    Cheers,
