Ron Jarzombek: blotted scientist

News:
23-01-2008:
Ron Jarzombek interviewed by Shred Academy.

When asked about the new DVD Ron says:
I’m shooting for a mid ’08 release but it’ll probably be pushed back a bit. I have so much material that I want to cover. It will be at least 2 DVDs, could be 3. I won’t really know until I start the video taping, dialogue, theoretical animations, all the playing examples, additional technique notes, etc.

What material will you cover in your instructional DVD?
The focus will be the progressive/technical aspect of writing and playing, with examples and insight for material from both Spastic Ink CDs, my solo CDs, and the 'Blotted Science - The Machinations Of Dementia' CD. To be covered (with excerpts/examples from), on the first DVD, will be 1. Common simple scales use and abuse, 2. Changing Keys, 3. Simultaneous Major/Minor Keys/Progressions, 4. Floating Parallels, 5. Timing (Syncopation), 6. Trade-Offs, 7. Starts / Stops, and 8. The A/B Switch. The second DVD will focus on the 12-tone aspect of writing. I started using all 12 tones when writing on ‘Nighty Nite’ on my first solo CD ‘PHHHP!’. This evolved into using multiple 12 tone sets, modulating 12 tone sets, then on the BLOTTED SCIENCE CD, I started using what I call ‘The Circle of 12 Tones.’ The DVDs will not have any chapters titled ‘5 String Arpeggios’, ‘Sweeping’, ‘Alternate Picking’, etc. All of the technique stuff will be played but it will be fitted into the context of other theoretical things.

28-10-2007:
New (to me) CD material and DVD lessons from Ron Jarzombek.

"Several months ago, I did a bit of touring with Marty Friedman in Europe and Japan. The shows were recorded and filmed and have since been released by Avex Entertainment in Japan as 'Exhibit A: Live in Europe' (CD) and 'Exhibit B: Live In Japan' (DVD), respectively.

"I'd like to thank Marty for asking me again to help him get his solo material out there as well as Chris Catero and Jeremy Colson for kicking ass and the good times on the road. I hope we can do it again sometime! Special thanks go out to the folks at Avex and everyone involved for coordinating everything and putting on a first-class operation in Japan.

"I'm now getting back to my instructional guitar DVD, and it's looking like it will be on two separate DVDs. After releasing BLOTTED SCIENCE, I realized that there were too many examples and concepts that fit together and there needed to be a two-part release to cover everything. I'm looking at doing two two-hour videos with playing examples, theoretical concepts, and animated explanations, featuring songs and excerpts from both SPASTIC INK CDs, both my solo albums, and the just-released 'The Machinations of Dementia' CD [from BLOTTED SCIENCE]."

Innovative progressive shred the order of the day?... Then you must get your copy of "Blotted Science". Incredible licks, meters, precision and heavy as hell and now available from guitar9!

Guitar9 says:
The Machinations Of Dementia offers frenzied instrumental prog/tech/death metal from three of the premier talents in extreme metal - guitarist Ron Jarzombek, bassist Alex Webster and drummer Charlie Zeleny. The initiator of Blotted Science, Jarzombek has long been hailed as one of the most singularly unique guitarists and brilliantly creative forces of the progressive vanguard. First coming to the world's attention via Watchtower's seminal 1989 tech thrash masterpiece, "Control & Resistance", Ron further stunned prog connoisseurs with his abstract 90's outfit Spastic Ink, put his signature stamp on the acclaimed Gordian Knot debut album, and has toured the US, Europe, and Japan with fellow guitarist Marty Friedman of Megadeth fame. Alex Webster is recognized as one of the premier bassists in extreme metal, while Charlie Zeleny brings incredible dexterity as well as a fearless no-holds-barred approach to the project. Welcome to your dissection.

Another mega update for Ron Jarzombek

According to Ron:
1. I'm about to take off to Japan to meet up with MARTY FRIEDMAN, Chris Catero, and Jeremy Colson in Tokyo for one last show at the Ebisu Liquid, Saturday, May 12. The gig is being filmed for a live DVD and will be released later this year along with a live album we recorded over in Europe last month.

before I go I wanted to leave you all a little present I know quite a few of you have been waiting for - some BLOTTED SCIENCE! I have uploaded snippets of 5 songs, so check it out!...

The Circle Of 12 Tones

The Circle Of 12 Tones update

2. A few weeks ago, I returned from a Marty Friedman European tour covering Germany, France, Holland, England, Italy, and Israel. Stay tuned for some pics, stories, and who knows what else...

3. On a more local front, due to the closing of H & H Music (where I have been teaching for the past 15 years), a few fellow instructors and I have opened a school/studio on the far northeast side of town. Actually, it’s in Universal City, where the majority of our clientele is. It will be called either Universal Music Studios or R M Studios.

4. Nothing at all happening with WatchTower.

5. I have not been working on my upcoming DVD "Theoretically Speaking" mainly because I'm trying to get the Blotted Science CD completed. And my hard drives (all 4 of them totalling something like 250G) can only take so much. I have a total of 94 pages of material transcribed and I will get back to the video taping as soon as the Blotted Science CD is completed. The focus of the DVD(s) will be the progressive/technical aspect of writing and playing, with examples and insight for material from both Spastic Ink CDs, my solo CDs, and the upcoming 'Blotted Science - The Machinations Of Dementia' CD.

To be covered (with excerpts/examples from), will be...

1. Common simple scales use and abuse - ('Aquanet' verses, 'Melissa's Friend' verses and 2nd solo, 'Multi-Masking' verse fingertap breaks, 'The Mad Dash', 'Battle Of The Hands' )
2. Changing Keys - ('Sick, Dirty, Sick', 'A Morning With Squeakie' 1st solo, 'Frank Can Get Drunk And Eat Beer', 'In Memory Of' chorus and main solo)

3. Simultaneous Major/Minor keys/progressions - ('Just A Little Bit' chorus and solo, 'Taking Notes', 'Minor Else')
4. Floating Parallels - ('A Morning With Squeakie' chase sequence, 'That 178 Thing' middle section and solo), 'Mosquito Brain Surgery' intro, 'Back And Forth')

5. Syncopation - ('Snuff', 'Mosquito Brain Surgery' main theme, various sections from 'ACRONYM', 'Tri, Tri Again', 'Gimme 5')
6. Trade-Offs - ('The Mad Data Race' bridge, 'Suspended On All Fours' breaks, 'Sex With Squeakie' "making squirrely love")
7. Starts / Stops - ('Stop-N-Go', The Mad Data Race' verses, 'Erratic Chromatic')

8. The A/B Switch - ('Melodramatic Chromatic', 'ACRONYM' intro)
9. The 12 tone set - ('Suspended On All Fours' themes and solo, 'Two Thirds Of Satan')
10. Modulating 12 tone sets - ('I've Got The Runs', 'I've Got The Runs Again')
11. Multiple 12 tone sets - ('Multi-Masking' solo, 'Words For Nerds' "technician")
12. The Circle Of 12 tones - ('Laser Lobotomy', 'EEG Tracings')

I still don’t know if this all will be on one DVD, or if I’ll need two to cover everything.

6. I’ve also started to get ideas for the multimedia solo adventure that I want to tackle once the Blotted Science CD and the DVD(s) are done. I'm currently looking for a graphic artist to illustrate 6 "arcade/video game" characters. If anyone is interest, please send me an email ronjarz@satx.rr.com.

Ron Jarzombek explains computer terminology and Spastic Ink music in all time signatures!!!

07-03-2007:
Blotted Science is the instrumental extreme metal project featuring guitarist Ron Jarzombek, bassist Alex Webster, and drummer Charlie Zeleny. Ron is putting the finishing touches on its debut album, entitled "The Machinations of Dementia" and all that's left is for Ron to write and record melodies/solos, tie up any remaining loose ends, and then start mixing. Graphics are also nearly completed.

Ron said
"We have not yet decided how exactly we're gonna get this album out. We might release it on our own through various distributors, or we might consider signing a licensing deal with a label for at least some of the territories. It really kind of depends on what the labels are willing to offer. We should have a couple advance tracks ready for shopping purposes very soon. Those of you expecting to hear some brutal and technically demanding material — prepare yourselves!"

Jarzombek adds,
"On another note, I'm really looking forward to the upcoming European tour with my friend, Marty Friedman. Except for a couple of festival one-offs with Watchtower, I have not done any live work over there since 'Watchtower toured with Coroner way back in 1990 in support of the 'Control and Resistance' album. As some of you may recall, I was also with Marty's band for the Guitarevolution Tour which, unfortunately, never got extended after that run of Southwest dates we did in the fall of 2003. Chris Catero is also back on bass, and we've got the amazing Jeremy Colson on drums who played on Marty's new album, 'Loudspeaker'. We will be recording these shows for a live album so I hope all you European guitar heads are turning out in force and make yourselves heard!"

Ron also noted :
"I have not been working on my upcoming DVD, 'Theoretically Speaking', mainly because I'm trying to get the Blotted Science stuff completed. And my hard drives (all four of them totalling something like 250G) can only take so much. I have a total of 94 pages of material transcribed and I will get back to the video taping as soon as 'The Machinations of Dementia' is in the can. The focus of the DVD(s) will be the progressive/technical aspect of writing and playing, with examples and insight for material from both Spastic Ink CDs, my solo CDs, and Blotted Science, of course...."Last but not least, I’ve also started to get ideas for the multimedia solo adventure that I want to tackle once Blotted Science and the DVD(s) are done. I'm currently looking for a graphic artist to illustrate 6 'arcade/video game' characters. If anyone is interested, please send me an email to ronjarz_at_satx.rr.com."
