Greg Howe: fusion on sail

News:
28-01-2008:
I forgot to post Greg's recent q1 year review, with lots of good things music wise:

The New Year in High Gear
Current mood: thankful

It's the day after NAMM and I'm kinda recuperating. NAMM is always fun and always exhausting. It was cool to hang out with old friends that I haven't seen in a long time as well as some of my sponsors. I saw Mike Varney briefly at the Spectra-flex cable booth and surprisingly he avoided giving me flack for not having the record done yet…very cool of him. The album is, however, coming along very nicely….a little bit slower than I hoped, but there are a lot of other things going on currently, making it difficult to dedicate the amount of time towards it that I would like, but like I said, it is coming along and is sounding pretty cool.

I talked at length with a friend of mine from Brazil who owns a very successful guitar company, and we have pretty much confirmed that we are going to go ahead with a signature electric guitar. We are going to be designing it from the ground up….in other words it won't be based on modifying a model that they already have. We are starting from scratch….body shape, neck style, scale length, wood, and etc… I'm really excited about this because it will be the first time in my career that I will actually have an opportunity to design something that feels and acts perfect for me…. Well, not the first time… but the first time I feel really good about it. There's a big difference between a company that says "we're willing to do a signature model" and a company that says "we'd really like to make you a signature model". These guys really want to do it, so I'm definitely excited.

Speaking of being excited, I'm really excited about the fact that we finally finished the "Introspection" tab book last week! Yes… I know it has taken over a year to complete and originally we predicted it would take only 2 months. Well, obviously I was wrong. It turned out to be one of the most tedious endeavors I'd ever been involved with. We might have pulled it off had we been able to dedicate 6 to 7 hours every day for 2 months straight, but unfortunately that approach would not have been very conducive to the overall maintenance of my career. Sorry to keep you guys waiting but I do feel good about the fact that I was there every step of the way and for every single note that was played on every one of those songs, so it won't be like so many other tab books out there that contain accurate notes and inaccurate fingerings. This will show exactly how it was played. We've begun the process of getting the artwork and duplicates made and we are aiming to have it out in about 2 months. Woops… did I just say 2 months? OK, we are aiming to have it out as soon as possible .

Well, what the heck, since we're on the subject of inaccurate predictions, I might as well add that the lesson website believe it or not, really is coming along and really is going to happen. I've had some major setbacks along the way but we're totally back on track now. You guys have been patient beyond belief so I promise not to let you down.

Thanks a million for hanging in there and I'll try to keep you posted as things progress.

Peace,

Greg

A really great blog ia available from Greg Howe for myspace fans: http://blog.myspace.com/greghoweguitarist
I t documents the current recording with Jon Reshard and for Shrapnel records. Gerg also visits Jason Becker...

Afterwards I came home and plugged in the hard drive containing everything we had done up at Prairie Sun studio only to discover that the drive was not being recognized by my computer. So, I plugged the hard drive into 2 other computers, but came up with the same results. A faulty hard drive…hmm…I would think they'd check that out before sending it off.

I won't spoil it for you...

Collection - "The Shrapnel Years" contains Howe's best instrumental musical moments and is comprised of aggressive rock and fusion compositions which highlight Greg's incredible technique, memorable melodies and complex songwriting. These tracks contain standout performances by some of the greatest musicians in progressive music, including drummers Dennis Chambers and Atma Anur and bassists Billy Sheehan and Victor Wooten, among others. This compilation's focus is Howe's highly technical, yet very melodic, guitar style that has established him as one of the most innovative guitar instrumentalists of our time and a true guitarist's guitarist.

Greg Howe will be the new guitarist for Planet X according to Derek Sherinian:

ok here it is- We have met with Greg yesterday. He is open to joining Planet X - unfortunately due to contractual obligations, he will not be able to commit with us until 2007. I think that this is worth the wait, as Greg is a phenomenal player. Regarding the current Planet X record, we will issue a status report at the end of the month. We are sorry for all the delays, we just want it to be the best it can be. Thanks
Derek

05-05-2005:
Greg Howe has provided recording assistance to Francesco Fareri for his "Forbidden Dimension" release on 28th July 2005.

Background:
Greg Howe has appeared many times on truthinshredding as a key influence of many guitar players. So he is a premier league player and a recommend guitar star who has extended the field of fusion guitar playing, so should appear in your CD and DVD collections.

He started playing guitar from the age of ten, and as he moved into his teens he became heavily influenced by Eddie Van Halen. He concentrated on learning music theory and created a band with his brother Al.

Things were set to change for Greg when in 1988 he was picked up by Mike Varney Shrapnel records label, following on from Mike's signing of players like Tony Macalpine, Vinnie Moore and Yngwie Malmsteen. But he broke the Shrapnel neo classical mould delivering the self titled Greg Howe album, setting the guitar work alight with his own brand of blues rock fusion. The album featured the bass talents of Billy Sheehan and drummer Atma Anur.

Greg then recorded to vocal rock album with his brother Al and the band Howe II.
These CD's:
highlight his playing in a modern rock context and would greatly appeal to Van Halen and rock fans in general.

Then in 1993 he released an altogether more serious work, Introspection, that was the start of the more jazz fusion based blues rock playing that we know and love today.

These were followed by:
Since then his skills have made him a sort after guitarist replacing Jennifer Batten in 1996 on Michael Jackson's History tour through Europe and Asia, touring the U.S. and Europe in 2000 with Enrique Iglesias, making two separate tours of the states in 2001 and 2002 with NSYNC and doing a promotional tour in 2003 with Justin Timberlake.

He's also spotlighted upcoming players like Prashant Aswani providing them him with production duties for the "Revelation" release and Bass, Keyboards, Drum Programming, Acoustic Guitar, Production, Engineering, Mixing on 2002 "Duality" release.

Check out these really great interviews:
You can also buy the new live DVD of the Gentle Hearts tour or the relatively old Hot Rocks video.
