Guthrie Govan: news from the undiscovered

News:
04-03-2008:
To celebrate the 9th Birthday of award winning British amp builder Cornford, and the release of the new Cornford Roadhouse amp, Andertons Music Co thought we’d throw a little party! Guthrie Govans band, the Erotic Cakes, are going to play a full set, and Paul Cornford will be there to show off the new Roadhouse amps & answer any questions you may have about the range. The evening is set for the 28th April, at Guildford’s number one music venue, the Boiler Rooms. Entry to the evening is free, but you must pre register your name in order to get in! This is sure to be a packed event, so please don’t leave things to the last minute. If you’d like to book a place then please email your name & the number of tickets you want (max 4 per booking) to info@andertons.co.uk – please put "CORNFORD BIRTHDAY PARTY" in the subject field. As soon as we’re full we’ll change this story to say so.

Guthrie will be headlining the show with all of his Erotic Cakes for a full set of Guthrie'ness, we also should have some special guests turning up to jam at the end and the loverly Anne Marie Helder will be kicking off proceedings with a solo set.

It will be held at a wonderful club called the Boiler-rooms in Guildford Surrey, it only holds 160 so it going to fill up real quick, entrance is free and the link to get yourself on the guest list is...

A big thanks to my brother for spotting this news item:
John Payne, Guthrie Govan and Jay Schellen of ASIA have announced plans for a new band called ONE.

A deal has already been signed with InsideOut Records and the band’s self titled debut album will be released on 23rd May in North America and 26th May in Europe. Keyboard duties on the album were handled by Ryo Okumoto from Spock’s Beard.

The band plans to play select shows during the summer with a full European tour in the Autumn of 2006.

Asia will play two European festivals this summer – Sweden Rock Festival on June 10th and Rock of Ages in Germany on July 28th. At this moment plans are to release Architect of Time at some point in 2006.

ONE will be unveiling their new website in the near future. It will be located at www.musicbyone.com

08-02-2206:
Guthrie Govan CD moves forward?

From ASIA’s official site:

Further to recent announcements on johnwetton.com , stevehowe.com and geoffdownes.com, "Architect of Time" has been shelved and related tour dates suspended. John Payne, Guthrie Govan and Jay Schellen will announce their future plans shortly.

From Steve Howe web site:

In conjunction with Asia's 25th anniversary the four original members--Steve, Geoff Downes, Carl Palmer, and John Wetton--plan on celebrating the 25th anniversary of the creation of Asia with a CD, DVD, and world tour.

The original members wish to convey their heartfelt thanks for the global support, love and enthusiasm that has made this possible. Stay tuned for updates.

Those in the know will know that Guthrie was the best thing in Asia..every cloud has a silver lining.

New "The Fellowship" Tone Merchants Videos. British guitarist extraordinaire Guthrie Govan and Tone Merchants present a new set of video clips of Guthrie performing with a jazz/funk/fusion band called the Fellowship based in Chelmsford, UK.

24-01-2005:
New Guthrie Govan Media is now available from Guthrie's discussion forum, just register to download files. Featuring a whole range of previously unreleased material.

Background:
Focusing on guitar for over 20 years has made me notice that amazing talent does not equate to amazing success. There are countless would be guitar mavens who have either failed to make the grade or have had to follow in a supporting role as a guiarist in a once great band. For an example of this you need look no further than Dave Kilminster.

In the meantime other more well recognised artists continue to release, in my opinion, less than average guitar product. You can add your own names here:

Guthrie Govan is from the former set of "underground" super star guitar players. To see what I mean you need to check out this outstanding promos for the guitar amp manufacturer Tone Merchants.

Guthrie won the european guitarist of the year. However, rather than being swept along by the success, Guthrie appears to have "disappeared" into the underground of fusion demos and and creative silence. Filling in time with articles for Guitar Technique , writing his own guitar instructional books, touring with a fusion band and hitting the woodshed.

Then, like many of his contemporary players from the UK scene, he is dragged from obscurity to be the lead guitarist with a once great band, in his case Asia. You can read his resume or talk about him on his online forum.

The good news is Guthrie is getting a following and hopefully there'll be a new web site and album by the end of the year, Asia tours permitting. Lets hope this is the beginning of the start of the "third wave" of guitar, driven from the heart of Europe.

If you miss him with Asia you may be lucky enough to see him playing with Josh Funk PA which also features Seth Govan.

  5. Did you actually manage to get our "Coming Soon to bluesjamtracks" video to work, Laurie? The reason I took it down so quickly was because we were having some weird problems with iMovie setting the framerate all wrong, and it just wouldn't seem to play properly on Youtube... the audio was ok, but the picture was skipping horribly.

    It'll be back soon!
