A fantastic interview with Mike Varney with modern guitars, celebrating 25 years of the Shrapnel label. I know fans like me will like to thank Mike for building the instrumental guitar cause.

A cool example:
Yeah, Mark was the first guy to sign [Frank] Gambale, and then Mark went out and did the Truth In Shredding album with Gambale and Allan Holdsworth, which is legendary among jazz-fusion guitarists. Then he did Centrifugal Funk. My brother and I grew up in the same house, from good parents, and we listened to the same records growing up and had a lot of the same influences and liked the same stuff. I'm sure my brother had a lot to do with shaping my musical taste also, because older brothers impact on their younger brothers. My brother's six years older than I am.

Anyway, he started Legato and was doing pretty well, and at some point he decided to take a different career path and just folded everything. We recently, in the last couple of years, put out Truth In Shredding and Centrifugal Funk on the Tone Center label, we reissued them. They haven't sold great, but at least people that were interested were able to get them for less than $200 on eBay, which is what some of them had gotten up to. When my brother kind of tossed it in, I was sitting around wondering if maybe it's something I should do. I tried to buy Legato from him, but because of all the contracts and all the different relationships and things like that, he decided that it would be more of a hassle to sell it than to let it go. I didn't want to sit there and read through every one of my brother's contracts to make sure that every I was dotted and every T was crossed. I ended up just licensing those couple of records.

*Due to all the freakin' stupid new fees argued for by CRB/SoundExchange vs Net Radio Equality Act and Webcasting folk, I have adopted a novel approach to future web radio shows for awhile. My shows will be a mystery jam of oodles of aural goodies. If you dig the track, write down track number or track ID KEY and e-mail or message me for more info -- cuz I am gonna strip all id from mp3s before I upload them for streaming. That way I can still promote the music to BUYERS who I will entrust song/ title /artist / CD & instant shopping links for such.

Here's how it works: You listen to the show. You hear a cut you dig. You contact me via e-mail or via form submitted on show's page. Include fav track(s) number and/or ID KEY. I then send you info you request and where to BUY the music. Then it's up to you to BUY the CD so the artist can eat and this show can continue.

SIMPLE! http://www.eer-music.com/EER_CONTACT_INFO.html

This way, I also get specific feedback on what my radio shows are really doing for artist promo.

'Ballet de Shred' an uncommon melding
By CHRISTOPHER YASIEJKO, The News Journal
Posted Sunday, September 16, 2007

Conner McHale and Kelsey Allen will be part of the cast of "Ballet de Shred." Courtesy of Rick Neidig. Chris Gordon's students know him as a practitioner of the shred style of guitar, in which speed and technical proficiency meld. It takes countless hours of practice to reach the point at which a player can bring listeners to gawk in awe. And since that's what many of his students strive to do, Gordon has to ensure they properly train.

Finger exercises work well enough, but at some point he started assigning the work of classical composers, such as a piece of one of Niccolò Paganini's caprices.

"So you're not only getting your dexterity, but you're playing something that's extremely musical," Gordon says. "Any one piece is a textbook in harmony and counterpoint, but the fun of plugging into an amp and looking like a rock star and acting like one is all there, too."

It's that last part that the paying public will have a chance to see at 8 p.m. Oct. 19, when the Shred Chamber of The Arts Academy at The Grand joins dancers from First State Ballet Theatre in an experimental production dubbed "Ballet de Shred."

(The Grand has rebranded its Grand School of Music as The Arts Academy at The Grand, a move that serves two purposes: It foreshadows an expansion of programming and partnerships beyond instruction in musical instruments, and it alleviates a common confusion among the public between the Grand School of Music and the School of Rock, which rents space at The Grand's site on North Market Street but is an independent organization.)

Gordon, director of the Shred Chamber and an instructor and show director with the School of Rock, isn't pretending that he's created a mutant genre. Shred guitar in the 1980s began appearing in neo-classical metal, a subgenre of heavy metal; the Swedish guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen was a pioneer. Gordon, now 38, recalls attending Malmsteen concerts during which the guitarist would slide into a Bach piece, and the band would follow. It was, Gordon says, a whole new way of listening to the music.

The melding of shred with classical guitar reached a wider audience less than two years ago, when a video posted on YouTube showed a young man in a beige hat playing a modern version of Johann Pachelbel's "Canon in D Major." The 5 minute, 20 second video has been viewed nearly 28 million times, placing it among the most-viewed in the site's history.

Gordon decided to take the notion one step further, to bring more musicians into the mix to reinterpret other sections of a piece.

He dissected by ear the various elements of orchestral recordings and recorded each track as played on his guitar. Then he assigned each part to a musician. It was a laborious process, he says -- imagine, for example, hunting for the path of a viola amid a sea of instruments, as Gordon did with a Tchaikovsky concerto that features a 20-piece orchestra, then figuring out how to play it on electric guitar.

"I firmly believe that if these composers were alive today, they would certainly embrace the technology that's been available to us," Gordon says. "I approached a conductor years ago about doing Tchaikovsky's 'Concerto in D' with electric guitars, and he actually laughed me out of the room. I could not believe the stoic purism that these people had, which was like, 'You don't get it.'

"But at the same time, it's easy to get lost in the idea that it's just plug in and play really loud. I get very into the nuances. I want the tones to be accurate. I want it to be fulfilling. The students learn to control the instrument, to control the note, as opposed to just bashing out a note -- not that I'm opposed to that, either. It's the idea of joining these two worlds together and at the same time educating these kids about it."

Pasha and Kristina Kambalov, the artistic and school directors, respectively, of First State Ballet Theatre, collaborated with Gordon on some of the music selection, but this merging of disparate artistic pursuits is as new to them as it will be to the audience.

The musicians will be onstage, in full view, probably on several platforms behind the dancers. During certain pieces, the musicians will interact with the dancers -- about 20 in all -- without interfering.

"It won't be pit band performing music for people to dance to," Gordon says.

Coupled with modern interpretations of classic dance routines, the program will include eight classical pieces, including Vivaldi's "Summer" from "The Four Seasons" and Saint-Saëns' "The Dying Swan" from "Carnival of the Animal," and works by Tchaikovsky, Aubry and Rossini.

Gordon also will conduct two of his own neo-classical pieces, "Sanctuary Suite Opus 7" and "Abigail's Crossing," as members of First State Ballet perform the choreography of the Ukrainian Viktor Plotnikov and the Russian Vitali Popkov.

Plotnikov created a commissioned work for "Summer," which Kristina Kambalov says will include the use of portable mirrors. Three of his other choreographed pieces will be adapted for the performance, as well.

First State Ballet Theatre's principal dancers for the production include Kelsey Allen, Jake Allison, Aubrey Clemens, Brittany Ross and Haley Hopkins.

Shred Chamber musicians include Katie Jacoby (electric violin) and Conner McHale (guitar) of Hockessin; CJ Tywoniak (guitar) and John Norcross (drums, guitar) of Downingtown, Pa.; Dustin Manucci (guitar) of New Castle; Mattie Young (guitar) of Newark; and Aaron Cole (guitar) of Concordville, Pa.

Jacoby, a 17-year-old virtuoso, learned Sept. 6 that she had earned a spot as alternate to first-chair violin in the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Once she receives the group's sheet music, Jacoby, a senior at St. Mark's High School, will prepare for the possibility that she'll be called to substitute for the lead violinist. Jacoby could find herself playing before packed arenas. Before that, however, she'll perform at "Ballet de Shred."

Tickets for "Ballet de Shred" are $23-$27. They can be purchased at The Grand's box office (818 N. Market St.), by calling 652-5577 or by visiting www.grandopera.org.

A charity for all guitar fans: http://www.myspace.com/shredforcharity

Join up:
Shredding for the Elderly is the first project of Shredding for Charity, a 100% non-profit/volunteer program that was co-founded by rock star Kee Marcello. Shredding for Charity ia a new subsidiary of Better World Partners, an international NGO (non-government organization) based in Washington D.C.

Kee is a very nice, caring and super talented musical artist/producer/teacher who played guitar in and composed for the famous rock band Europe.

Greg Phillips, Better World Partners's Chief Operating Officer, was first offered volunteer help from Kee for BWP in its efforts to bring awareness of the many poor, suffering elderly that are abandoned and alone. Phillips was very happy to get this offer from Kee, in part because he considered him to be the "best sounding guitarist!" he had ever heard (Phillips worked for and toured with world class Shredders including G3 and other Shredder tours.

Kee composed, produced and recorded some beautiful guitar tracks for one of BWP's public service announcements. Later, he offered one of his own songs to be sold for a fund raiser to help BWP, which inspired the idea of a Shredding For Charity program that will include other world class guitarists!

Jonas Hornqvist, another awesome Shredder, has been compared to Yngwie Malmsteen and others (like Kee) who are considered to be the best guitarists in the world! Jonas is an outstanding guitar teacher who has written many books on playing guitar and has three instructional guitar DVDs coming out soon! Most of all, Jonas is a very nice, caring person who also volunteered to help BWP bring awareness of the many poor, suffering elderly that are often alone!

All of us at Better World Partners would like to thank Kee, Jonas and everybody else that is helping us in our efforts to make the world a better place!

BWP does not promote any politics or religions; just compassionate, positive people setting good examples of loving their neighbors. BWP promotes and produces public service announcements to bring more awareness of the millions of suffering elderly, global warming, modern day slavery, drug addictions, animal welfare and many other social issues.

Aslo intrumentalcase.com have an interview with Bill Peck, who's not yet made it to this blog...but worth the read all the same... Bill says:
I go through spurts of practicing. A lot at night, every day for about 3-4 hours, but then I might go a week without playing! I am a busy guy and I do a lot of things other than music. I mean it’s 2007… if you think being known as a super shredder will pay your bills, you might consider waking up! There are guys doing it successfully, but very few “new generation” players.

But I really like where my playing is right now and I feel like the hard work is paying off. When I was 16, I played eight or more hours most days… Then after playing in stadiums with Gotti 13 on the NYSNC tour when I was 23 and being broke, my parents were ready for me to move out. Orlando is an expensive city and they hate shred here so getting a day job was the answer.

Another new guitar blog for you to enjoy: askweaves.com, a sample of some of the interesting posts, this one about one of my top subjects ... intonation ... Andy from weaves says:

Intonation is quite possibly the most important thing you can pay attention to as learning guitarist. It's so easy for a guitarist to neglect his intonation, and to consequently play out of tune. I'm a firm believer that your intonation should be worked on just as often as other facets of your technique. How to work on it? Well it's no easy task. It's an uphill battle to say the least.

a very interestign article fro mthe LA times...Jazz and metal meet at the extremes here' just a snippet of the two pager from Greg Burk at http://metaljazz.com/

Axman Greg Howe, the ultimate hybridist, stretches from sideman spiels with Prince to his own funk/fusion/metal explosions; recently he guested on a Jeff Beck tribute album.

"Back in high school, my one group of friends was into Ronnie James Dio, and my other group of friends was into disco," says Howe by phone from his Long Beach home. "And if I ever said that I liked this song by Kool and the Gang, and I also liked this song by Black Sabbath, people looked at me like I wasn't allowed to say that."

Zakk Wylde, now 40 years old, was too young to have posed with the first generation of rock guitar gods. But his electric exploits in Ozzy Osbourne's band since age 19 and later with his own Black Label Society kept the shredding aesthetic visible during the thud-and-rap generation of nu-metal.

Sherinian has employed him frequently on his metal-fusion solo albums; he's broad-minded enough to admit his admiration for Neil Young and Elton John. Wylde will sit down with an acoustic guitar or a piano — even a banjo. And fusion? He got his chops the old-fashioned way, via his New Jersey guitar teacher, Leroy Wright.

Lion Music highlight the growing problem they are having with CD releases:

Demo Submissions: Regarding your demo or offered album master

Dear Musicians,

We are NOT able to sign more artists. No demos or masters you send us will be considered for release. We will NOT listen to any mp3 files or check out your websites and we will NOT respond to questions regarding releasing your album.

The illegal file sharing on the net is killing independent music. We are sorry about this situation but we are sure you are aware of what is going on. Our demo policy will not change before our politicians have stopped the P2P sites. Illegal file sharing is not just about stealing from rich major companies. It is about killing independent music and making it impossible for many great musicians to have a chance to release albums and have a musical career even as a part time job.

Some people seem to think that file sharing does not affect record sales but these people don't know what they are talking about. All musical genres and all kinds of artists are suffering and so will the genuine music fans in the end when the music they love will no longer be available in any guise - free or not. Next time you consider downloading an album for free or adding new torrents please think of the impact you are having on the artists - would you like it if we came into your home and stole your paycheck?

To give you some facts and figures on how this is affecting just some of Lion Music releases please view below - stats taken from just 1 non leading bit torrent site (we are not going to give free advertising to which site it is):

Sun Caged - Artemisia: 2082 illegal downloads and rising
Tears Of Anger - In The Shadows : 1965 illegal downloads and rising
Section A - Parallel Lives : 1926 illegal downloads and rising
Seventh Wonder - Waiting In The Wings : 1672 illegal downloads and rising
Tomorrow's Eve - Mirror Of Creation II The Genesis : 1545 illegal downloads and rising
Mind's Eye - Walking on H20 : 1345 illegal downloads and rising
Sphere Of Souls - ...From The Ashes : 1316 illegal downloads and rising
Seventh Wonder - Become : 922 illegal downloads and rising
Vitalij Kuprij - Glacial Inferno - 898 illegal downloads and rising
Nightscape - Symphony Of The Night : 725 illegal downloads and rising
Moonlight Comedy - Dorothy - 662 illegal downloads and rising
From Behind - Game Over - 588 illegal downloads and rising
Engine Of Pain - I Am Your Enemy - 477 illegal downloads and rising
Venturia - A New Kingdom : 304 illegal downloads and rising

Whilst some of these figures may seem inconsequential, on our tight budgets this is very worrying news for the viability of these bands to surive in the long term.

If these downloads translated into sales (nearly all do not) then you would most likely be seeing these bands more on the live arena, with members not having to work every hour in other jobs to make ends meet. No one is getting rich of this - not the artists or Lion Music staff.

The next time you are about to hit download on the free torrent please take a moment to think of the artist and the consequences of your actions.

Thank you for your time.

The Lion Music Team

Celebrate melodicrock.com tenth anniversary.

Joe Lynn Turner (Rainbow, Deep Purple, Yngwie Malmsteen), Jack Blades and Kelly Keagy (Night Ranger), Jim Peterik and Jimi Jamison (ex-Survivor), Eric Martin (Mr. Big), Jeff Scott Soto (ex-Journey/Talisman), Mark Slaughter (Slaughter), Gunnar & Matthew Nelson (Nelson), Kevin Chalfant and Josh Ramos (The Storm) will all be on one stage for one night only at MelodicRockFest, South Bend, Indiana.
The show takes place on October 6, 2007 at the Morris Performing Arts Center with live music beginning at 2pm. The concert will take the concept of a day-long rock festival into a fully-seated theater. Tickets are on sale now at: www.morriscenter.org

The term, "melodic rock" describes the type of rock sound that was very popular on AOR (album oriented rock) radio stations from the late 1970s through 1990. Presented by South Bend Classic Rock radio station 95.3 WAOR, MelodicRockFest will feature a full bill of support bands, merchandise for sale and the biggest list of superstars and special guests in this genre of rock.

MelodicRock.com is gigantic web portal and magazine that recognizes the fact that this type of music still has a large legion of loyal fans throughout the world. As Joe Lynn Turner says, "Just because the grunge movement came in and took over the airwaves in the 1990s here is the USA does not mean the fans of this type of music stopped liking it. They were just not being 'fed' this music as often by radio and video music television channels. MelodicRock.com fulfilled that need and continued to 'feed' fans with news, audio and more great features about this genre of music and the artists who continue to churn out high quality albums today."

Turner, who has released 9 solo albums since his solo debut, "Rescue You" in 1985, credits MelodicRock.com in part with the enormous success he has continued to have since he left Deep Purple in the early 90s. The portal is run by Australian based journalist Andrew McNeice and first made its debut in the first week of January 1997. Since that time it has become one of the most respected and leading music websites in the world, taking in 27 million hits and currently services 200,000 unique users per month.
The show headlining "house band" is Nashville based Scrap Metal, the all-star group featuring Gunnar and Matthew Nelson, Kelly Keagy, Mark Slaughter, Eric Martin, Dave Marshall (Vince Neil Band) and Gary Corbett (Lou Gramm Band/Cinderella). Turner and other rock luminaries will join Scrap Metal on stage for a special expanded headline set. Scrap Metal's regular set sees them plough through hit singles from the acts represented by the rockers - Slaughter, Nelson, Mr. Big and Night Ranger. The special expanded headlining set will also cover the classic hits from Rainbow, Deep Purple, Survivor and Damn Yankees.

Founding member of The Ides Of March and Survivor, Jim Peterik says: “I am thrilled to be a part of the landmark AOR show of the year! All of the talent that is synonymous with what we all loved about the 80's will be there all in honor of a man who has done so much to promote that music. Everyone is charged up and ready to do their best show ever. We will give you a night you will never forget.”

And Mr. Big vocalist Eric Martin adds: “The face of rock and roll music has changed so many times that it's hard to keep track of the adjective that comes before the word rock. Scrap Metal, the proverbial robot transformer made up of standout musicians from the 80s & 90s, brings the spirit of melodic rock & roll back from the dead. Dust off your black concert Tee's, polish off your cowboy boots and don't hurt yourself squeezing into your leather pants. Keep the dream alive & kickin' in South Bend.”

Watch Scrap Metal in action for yourself! http://youtube.com/watch?v=Vwh0IkhYQFI

Also slated to deliver knockout performances before the headline set are:

- Former Journey vocalist Jeff Scott Soto
- Canada’s Harem Scarem
- Kevin Chalfant Band
- Martie Peters Band
- 7th Heaven
- First Round Knockout

I've just been talking to fellow shred fan Steve Passiouras from http://www.myspace.com/fretnet. OK, what is Fret Net? Fret Net is a guitar music radio show, broadcast on PBS FM 106.7 in Melbourne, Australia. My name is Steve Passiouras, and I produce and host the show. Fret Net has been on air since October 2003. Steve plays mainly instrumental guitar music of all genres, although he does play the occasional vocal tune as well. So long as it features guitar, he'll play it on the show.

Sometimes, he adds interviews too, interviewing Brett Garsed a couple of times, Joe Satriani a couple of times, Steve Morse, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, Tony MacAlpine, Billy Sheehan, Slava Grigoryan, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Ralph Towner, Ian Moss, Bob Brozman, Michael Fix, Bruce Mathiske and many others.

For more info, check out the playlists and this article from Australian Guitar Magazine.

The good news is the Fret Net show is available for streaming online. Listen to it at your leisure! Here's the link: http://www.fretnet.com/playlists_20070626.html

Artists on this week's show are: Ciro Manna, Chris Poland, Joop Wolters, Francesco Fareri, Kaki King, Deep Purple (with Steve Morse). You can listen to many other archived shows on the Fret Net web site.

Dave B Says:
Hey guys, Dave here, welcoming you to the new website for my upcoming "InstruMental Case" podcast. At the moment there are no episodes, but the debut is in the works. My intention is to have it play out much like a radio show, in that initially it’ll just be me introducing and playing songs to help expose and promote new instrumental guitarists. Eventually I’d like to bring some audio interviews into the show, and maybe even find a co-host and turn it into a full-fledged podcast talk show

Great news from alloutguitar.com. They are promoting an all day guitar festival at The Junction, Cambridge on Sunday September 16th 2007 with a number of superb guitarists playing, including Guthrie Govan headlining at his biggest own show to date (The Junction is an 850-1000 capacity venue) and this forums own Andy James, Owen Vaughen amongst others.

This show is being professionally filmed for possible commercial release, but if any of you are UK based and live within a couple of hours of Cambridge you owe it to yourself to come down, sink a few brews and see Guthrie and everyone in a 'real' - ie non guitar show/guitar clinic - concert situation.

Watch for full info in the guitar press + forums such as petrucci.com forum. I hope some of you can make it - if alloutguitar.com can pull this off they are going to do more festivals such as this every three months with the aim of showcasing guitar talent that you would otherwise only ever see at Guitar shows in a real world concert situation. Please support this!

We are open to suggestions as to who should play the next one...

Date: Sunday September 16th 3 p.m. - Midnight
Venue: The Junction, Cambridge.

Line Up:
Guthrie Govan
Chris George Band (Marshalls chief worldwide demonstator and Young Guitarist of the Year back in the late 90's)
Wim Roelants (mucho flamboyant LAG and Laney demonstrator)
Andy James Band (world class Brit challenger to Macalpine, Petrucci etc)
Red Soxx (one of my outfits)
Ed Box and Friends (ultimate combination of George Lynch and Michael Schenker)
Steve Loveday and ex-Medicine Hat (seriously groovy southern rock)
Chris Francis Band (Guitarist of the Year 2000 - Brian May crossed with Gilbert)
Nick Andrew Band (Holdsworthian Fusion)
Heavy Load (Cambridge based SHIT HOT Blues outfit)

They have had over 200 advance orders for tickets so if anyone wants to get in quickly before the tickets go omn general sale please e-mail owen at owen@alloutguitar.com

Some news from the shredacademy team:
We need help - from good instructors! We want to compile a "beginners guide" primer ebook that people can download for free to get them started on guitar. So, it will be a communal effort - if you are interested in participating please send an email email to Begginers Guide and let us know. What we will do is have one instructor start off, and pass it around adding their '2 cents' until the end result is a helpful starter guide for people 100% new to guitar, with many peoples' input to give a correct and interesting read.

Contributors will be credited and weblinks included. This will also be bundled with the Guitar Methods: Lead Guitar Techniques CD we sell in our shop, which sells around 300 copies/month so this is a great way to get your names out there for free!

OK, I'm just a few thousand visits short of the 100,000...but just to let you know that I'm not alone...What with my buddy Dave B and InstrumentalCase joining the fray, now there's top "Polski" Mikolaj, or Mikolaj 'Nicolo' Furmankiewicz with his "Department of Virtuosity". Like Mr B, Mikolaj is driven to deliver you a database and reviews of guitar and virtuosi based material. Check out his latest release which contains 23 reviews of players including Edward Box - Moonfudge (2006), Massimo Izzizzari - Unstable Balance (2007), Patrik Carlsson - Melodic Travel (2006),Marco Ferrigno - Hanging Gardens (2006), Vitalij Kuprij - Glacial Inferno and Revenge (2007)...there a lot to read...so get stuck in. I added links in the side bars to "Department Of Virtuosity" for future reference. Take it away MySpace: Mikolaj
