Imagine virtuoso neo-classic shred guitar. Ok now multiply the best of that genre with youthful hunger to win an international competition and gain notice as the next great axe slinger. That is the state of affairs that occurred during the 2008 Guitar Idol competition and we as guitar heads are all the benefactors through this month's release of this excellence on CD. It is out now on Lion Music and is a must have for guitar freaks and a fans of metal in general.
The Iinternet played a massive part in the selection process and 500,000 people were involved in the process from either a voting, competing or visiting perspective.
The number of contestants surprised the organizers as 1000 artists spanned the Globe from Nepal, Australia and even Iraq.
The 12 finalists that were chosen to perform the live Finals in London this past June 14th (2008) were asked to play with arbitrary musicians without the benefit of a sound check and only 10 total hours of rehearsals amongst them.
The quality of the musicians was incredible and the back up band that was used was first rate. It was comprised of Darren Ashford on drums, Gianluca Corona on rhythm guitar and Dave Marks on the bass guitar.
This CD features all 12 of these finalists and the 6 closest contestants in an all out instrumental masterpiece.
At least 5 languages were represented at the finals and musicians from all the far corners of the world included Japan, Brazil, Sweden and Russia. Don't let the name scare you away, even the most anti-reality television, fervent American Idol hating bastards will enjoy this dominant guitar CD.
There even are fun very "original" songs like the "Electric Hillbilly" by Chris Feener, beautiful emotional ones like Daniele Gottardo's "Guitar Sbrego" or the reflective reminiscent driven "Terrestrial Paradise" from Dimitar's Nalbantov.
The song from the winner of the contest Gustavo Guerra "Na Veia" is solid and worthy but the real showstopper on this album is the fantastic "Imperishable Ferocity" by Denis Vlachiotis. The cut is one of the best shred songs "ever" and features 25 seconds of some of the most vicious phrasing/chops fret-board work in guitar history. 2:20 in Denis goes off like a ticking time bomb yet in a melodic way that is sensational. What a talented man!
Watch out for these 18 folks as they should make one hell of an impact on the world of rock and metal for years to come.
It is no surprise that the number one guitar label on earth Lion Music released this record but folks this is exceptional even by Lars Eric Mattsson's standards.
Pick up a copy of this spectacular CD immediately if not sooner.
