Alex Skolnick: guitar edge article

At a NAMM show, metal-cum-jazz guitarist Alex Skolnick was asked how he rated digital recording technology against old-school analog methods. Without missing a beat, he responded, “I prefer the old style of recording because it forced you to have talent.” Skolnick’s talent has taken several paths since his departure from thrash heroes Testament, in 1992. When not gigging with Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Skolnick studied jazz harmony and composition at New York’s New School. He has since released three albums of jazz-trio profundity (most recently, Last Day in Paradise). But a reformed Testament is currently his main gig, resulting in the reunion album The Formation of Damnation.
