Joe Satriani: metal express radio interview

It was a surprise as I got a call out of the blue from Sammy, we both live in the San Francisco Bay Area so we are practically neighbours and he was putting a band together. We were in a band together about 6 or 7 years ago called Planet Us with Neal Schon and Deen Castronova from Journey and Michael Anthony was playing bass as well but we could never really get together to record much as I got busy and Sam got busy and everyone else was busy too. We did however record 2 songs that ended up on Sammy’s last solo record. One of the songs we wrote together back then ended up on the Chickenfoot record. About a year and a half ago Sammy called me and asked me to come to a show he was doing in Las Vegas and he said Chad Smith and Michael Anthony were going to be there. I went down to the show and we jammed for 35 minutes and it was such a fun thing to do. When we finished, the response from the audience was great. More importantly we felt that something really important had happened between us. We didn’t want this to be a one time thing and we wanted to do something about it. We promised each other that we’d follow it up with some kind of writing session to see if we could make it last. I had a writing session with Sam and it turned out great and we had so many great ideas and I got a feel of the kind of mjoeusic he was looking to move into and he also got to know the kind of Rock `n` Roll I was into and how we shared the same roots. What came out of the writing sessions is how much everyone loved great music and all the guys were into all this great new music just like me too. It was very exciting and we felt it was going to provide a lot of energy for a new direction.

John 5: indiana clinics

A brace of videos featuring John 5 during his current clinic tour.

John 5 Clinic 09 in Indiana Black Widow of La Porte

John 5 Clinic 09 in Indiana Sounds of Impalement

John 5 appears at the national guitar workshop
Los Angeles, CA – July 5-10 2009
Classic to Prog Rock Bass
Mojo Room
Monster Soloist
Ultimate Rock Drums
Whole Lotta Zeppelin

How does one define John 5? Is he rock? Is he country? Is he heavy metal? What about emo, industrial, or bluegrass? Truth is, there is no one set genre to fit John 5. In a world where music must be defined, John 5 breaks every mold by continually changing and adapting his style. Although he is unmistakably John 5 in his sound, he mixes around with the foundation with every new track he writes, every album he guests on, and every time he picks up the guitar.

Carl Verheyen: guitar bible

Kudos to the Stratoblogster: Congrats to the blogster for making the 500,000 hits mark... the Blogster says:
Wow! I just looked at the hit counter in my footer and discovered I went over 500K hits today!

This blog began in July '06 and currently has just over 1300 posts. It's been fun, I've learned a lot and made some friends too!

Most importantly, I also make good beer money from the affiliate stuff.

All from blogging about Strats and Strat accessories. Yup..

Steve Vai: box set!

Steve Vai box set:
Greetings and congratulations. If you are an aspiring guitar player, I hope you'll conclude that you have just purchased the most life-changing, mind-expanding, mood-altering, cost/benefit-ratio-effective, stress-reducing, shred-inducing CD collection of your lifeŠ sort of.

This series of CDs is designed for the jammers those who crave playing their instruments along with a band, but don't have the band to back them up.

Through the years, whenever I would mix my records I would usually do a mix of specific songs without the lead guitar. This allowed me to play along with the track or make loops to jam to, and because I figured perhaps someday maybe others would like to do the same. Voila! We have arrived at someday.

Playing to these naked tracks, or creating loops of various sections to endlessly meander over, is a phenomenal way to discover unique musical ideas from within yourself.

When we are playing an instrument and our mind enters that exclusive elusive mental real estate of our own personal muse, it can result in a form of musical meditation.

This series of play-along CDs is designed to help create an atmosphere of focus so you can shred yourself into a personally-induced inspirational nirvana.

For the most part, the tracks in this series are presented in their original form with the lead guitar removed. In some cases, I looped some solo sections to give you an opportunity to stretch out.

I suggest you import these files into a sequencer program of sorts, such as ProTools, GarageBand, etc. and create loops of various parts of the songs to jam over. On many tracks, a hit or count-off was added to the intro to indicate where the song starts. On some tracks, a small portion of the original melody guitar may have been tacked onto the intro as a guide.

I have always felt that the most important element in evolving as a musician is the development of the inner ear. This is perhaps even more important than technique as our inner ear is where our musical voice and uniqueness on the instrument comes from. You don¹t have to understand music theory or the language of music to be an effective player, but you do need to be able to identify and respond to the melodic voice within and make it real on your instrument. This is the connection that our fingers have with our imagination.

In the liner notes you can download from, I give various parameters regarding the key, scale, time signature, etc. of the track, but these are just road maps that you may choose to take. There are a lot of dirt roads off the main highway. You are encouraged to experiment with alien notes. You know... the little green ones! (Liw, Liw.)

I have always been fascinated with the Language of Music - knowing all the scales and theory, etc. However, it has always been clear to me that if you allow your ears to be the defining factor regarding your note choice, your melodies can be more effective than just letting your fingers fly all over the place because they happen to know the right scale.

One way to play along with these tracks is to learn the original guitar parts that are on the album versions of the songs, but I would encourage you to take a more active role in using these tracks as a bed to lay your own creative interpretation over. There are really no rules. So sit back, flip on a naked track and dress it up with your own artistic musical apparel.

Naked Tracks is housed in a special limited edition digi-pack box set. This series of play-along CDs is designed to help create an atmosphere of focus so you can shred yourself into a personally-induced inspirational nirvana. Included in the set are 5 CD's featuring backing tracks from the following albums:

• Passion And Warfare
• Sex & Religion
• Alien Love Secrets
• Fire Garden
• The Ultra Zone
• Alive In An Ultra World
• Real Illusions: Reflections

Allan Holdsworth: trio live review

Dr Matt Warnock reviews Allan Holdsworth Trio, May 14, 2009:
Though he is known for his legato and sweep picking techniques, rarely did more than a few minutes pass before Holdsworth switched from his pick to his fingers, and even to both, for his right-hand attack. The versatility displayed in Holdsworth's right hand provided both tonal and melodic contrast to his lines and chord phrases. The hybrid (pick and fingers) technique was especially effective as it allowed him to perform string skips and oddly-fingered arpeggios that bridged the gap between his single-line and chord playing during solo sections. As well, Holdsworth was constantly changing the effects and tone on his guitar to provide yet another level of contrast in his playing. He switched among clean, chorused and distorted tones between songs, and between sections of the tunes themselves. Holdsworth's attention to tone and tonal colors has helped make his sound one of the most recognizable in the realm of modern jazz-fusion guitarists.

SPV Records is bust and has filed for insolvency. SPV Schallplatten Produktion un Vertrieb GmbH, the Hanover-based company, better known as SPV has been in operation since 1984, initially starting as a German distribution house for Roadrunner Records.

According to Billboard,
managing partner Manfred Schütz willingly submitted an application to commence insolvency proceedings on Monday (May 25). They note that insolvency roughly equates to Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, and as of Wednesday (May 27), the District Court of Hanover appointed lawyer Manuel Sack as the provisional insolvency administrator.

Artists including Kreator, Nashville Pussy, Heaven & Hell, B.B. King, Motorhead and many more, including UFO, featuring Vinnie Moore. It might also explain the reason for the delay in the release of this CD. Also Yngwie Malmsteen.
