Mattias IA Eklundh, Guthrie Govan: rma clinics

Paul Warren says:
After lots of emails and years of talking and looking at schedules, the planets have aligned for a guitarist's dream. If you've always wanted to learn directly from Guthrie or Mattias, why not come join us and learn from both of them? A HUUUUGE thanks to both of these guys for making this happen and giving us in the USA a chance to learn from them up close and in person. We're holding a 5 day workshop where Guthrie and Mattias will each instruct for 4 days. Mattias has to get back to Sweden for his own Freak Guitar Camp so he won't be there for the last day, but he'll be at the RMA a day before Guthrie arrives. Suffice it to say, this is going to be one of the best events we've ever come up with. Also a big thanks to Suhr for helping make this happen. Come out and support these guys if you can, because this will be a tough thing to schedule again.

The details
2009 RMA Summer Guitar Workshop July 14-18
featuring Guthrie Govan & Mattias Eklundh

The 2009 RMA Summer Guitar Workshop is now open for registration at www.raleighmusicacademy.com. This year we are honored to host two of the most amazing international talents on electric guitar - Guthrie Govan and Mattias Eklundh. Guthrie is coming from England to join us for 4 days of the 5 day workshop and share his wealth of experience in multiple genres. It's hard to put into words the command Guthrie has on guitar, so it might be best to just listen for yourself by checking out his videos on Youtube located here: Guthrie on Youtube
Mattias IA Eklundh hails from Sweden and is the guitar wizard at the helm of the band Freak Kitchen. Known for his amazing use of harmonics, tapping and all around "Freakiness" on the guitar, he is one of the best players and teachers you will ever find. He joined us in 2005 for our summer guitar workshop and was a huge success so we're happy that he could squeeze us into his busy schedule this year. His popularity is currently booming as he and his band appear all over the world for tours and in every guitar magazine you can imagine. His music is distributed worldwide and his solo albums are distributed in the US by Steve Vai's label, Favored Nations. You can listen to his playing here: Mattias on Youtube
We are also happy to welcome back our regular summer guitar workshop instructor, Chris Ptacek of Plainfield School of Music near Chicago. A newcomer as a teacher this year will be another Suhr artist, Andy Wood. He is going to help us all understand chicken pickin' and hybrid picking a bit better. You can check out his playing here: Andy Wood.
An extra special part of this year's workshop is yet another Port City cabinet giveaway. A 2x12 loaded with V30's will be given away in a drawing on the last day of the workshop to a very lucky participant! Visit theirwebsite to view their unique line of amps and cabinets.
To register for this event, please click HERE. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us through our website or call 919-878-3338. Please do not hesitate registering for too long, as we do expect this workshop to sell out.

Thank you,
Paul Warren

News: stratoblogster is not selling out!

The StratOblogster lets you know thw world of guitar blogging has gone to the dogs! More promo than guitar show! Here's the beginning of his rant:
Y'know, a coupla months ago I was excited about the news feed Blips thing at Guitar World. And I'm sure I speak for other guitar bloggers as well.

Then it started getting pounded with American Idol crap, which thank God is finally over. Guitar oriented news?

Next, it's exciting to know about Chickenfoot, but I feel I'm all caught up on Chickenfoot-- kinda like Ralphie May is all caught up on Thanksgiving.

Ok, so maybe Gary Moore really has Ronnie Montrose's stolen Les Paul. But the story is so info-weak, and yet dozens of bloggers and feeds were re-hashing it like some FOX/CNN story.

You won't find me blogging about this sort of stuff! No! Anyway onto the latest news about Guitar Heo Van Halen...

Nuno Bettencourt, Warren De Martini: ratt extreme mega tour announced

New York, NY – Celebrated rock pioneers RATT and EXTREME have teamed up to bring you this summer’s most rockin’ tour lineup. The tour, which will feature sets from both bands with Ratt closing, kicks off on July 12 in Amarillo, TX and runs through August 7th in Hampton Beach, NH. It will cross the U.S. and cover 16 markets, with more to be announced soon. In celebration of the 25th anniversary of their landmark debut Out Of The Cellar, RATT will be playing the album in its entirety.

Both bands are excited about the double bill. “Warren DeMartini and Nuno Bettencourt on same stage, same night?? ‘Nuff said, we'll see you there!” says RATT’s Bobby Blotzer. EXTREME’s Nuno Bettencourt concurs, “One hot summer night. Two bands fully loaded with musicianship. Mix in one part memorable songwriting. Add nine ounces of passionate performers. Throw in three well respected guitarists. Add a touch of West Coast raunch and a hint of East Coast funk. And you get yourself a recipe for one night of unforgettable rock and roll.”

Ratt is currently in the studio recording its first new record in over 10 years with famed producer Elvis Baskette (credits). The band announced its new partnership with Loud & Proud/Roadrunner Records earlier this year. The album is planned for release this fall.

EXTREME recently released their first new album in thirteen years Saudades de Rock (pronounced “sow-dodge”) which is a groundbreaking record that reaffirms the beloved, Boston-bred foursome’s stature as innovators in the world of rock & roll.

Over the past two years, RATT has toured the world in support of their releases Tell The World – The Very Best Of Ratt and their first ever DVD, Videos from the Cellar- The Atlantic Years. During this time, the current lineup of Stephen Pearcy, Warren DeMartini, Bobby Blotzer, Robbie Crane and Carlos Cavazo played shows in Australia, Colombia and Peru for the first time in their careers. Their mega-hit “Round and Round” was prominently featured in the Oscar nominated 2008 film The Wrestler, and the band will be headlining ROCKLAHOMA this July.

One of the most popular rock acts of the past 20 years, RATT’s brand of guitar-driven melodic rock helped shape the LA metal scene. The band boasts a deep catalog of hits including smashes like “Round and Round,” “Lay It Down,” “You’re In Love,” “Lack of Communication” and “Wanted Man” which are beloved by fans the world over. The band has gone on to sell millions of albums worldwide. With 1984’s mega-platinum debut Out of the Cellar celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, the band is looking forward to starting a new chapter with new music to complement the impressive legacy they have established over two-plus decades.

To date, the Grammy-nominated EXTREME have released five albums, plus a greatest hits set—selling over 10 million records worldwide. They also achieved a #1 hit single, “More Than Words”—from their 1990 multi-platinum album Extreme II: Pornograffitti—on the Billboard Hot 100, which they followed with the Top Five “Hole Hearted.” Although these two acoustic hits brought the band great mainstream success, the band’s trademark sound has always been more a mix of hard rock funk—fueled by guitar virtuoso Nuno Bettencourt’s signature style, Gary Cherone’s resonant vocals and socially conscious lyrics, Pat Badger’s rock solid bass, and the hard hitting Kevin Figueiredo on drums. Extreme has recently been introduced to an entire new generation of fans with the inclusion of their song “Play With Me” in the popular video game Guitar Hero as well as “More Than Words” featured in hit movies Forgetting Sarah Marshall and The Love Guru.

Alex Skolnick: metal jazz interview

Alex Skolnick interviewed by Metal Jazz interview.

Eric Peterson mentioned that you brought some jazz elements such as strange time signatures into “The Formation of Damnation.”
“An example of that would be the song ‘Dangers of the Faithless,’ which goes back and forth from 5/4 time to 4/4 time. And yeah, that’s something that comes from jazz. And then some of the harmonic elements. The thing about jazz is that you tend to focus on different melodic choices than you would in rock. Most rock is very root-based, based on the main notes, the foundations of chords, the thirds and fifths. In jazz they have the ninths, elevenths, thirteenths.”
So you use those in the compositions as well as in the improvisations.
“Yeah, you learn to emphasize those, and sometimes even to develop a solo with those as a framework. And it expands your melodic ideas. I think in some ways, that finds its way into my contributions with Testament. I try to make sure that whatever I bring in is respectful to the music -- I’m not gonna try to change it. There’s a thin line between being too different and being constructively experimental. I try different stuff, and we see what works. I think in that song in particular, both the melody in the beginning and the odd time signature are examples of things that I would bring in that come from other styles of music.”

News: speaker software in a box

Recabinet. Album quality guitar tone, direct.

Speaker simulation in the box. Bring your own preamp.

Tired of miking up cabinets, but not satisfied with the brittle, plastic sound of digital amp modelers? Given rackmount speaker simulators a try, but not satisfied with the results?

With Recabinet, you can get full-bodied, album-quality guitar or bass tone at any volume with your Mac or PC. Recabinet accurately models the loud part of your guitar tone - including cabinets made by brands such as Marshall, Mesa Boogie, Fender, Orange, Vox, Ampeg, and more. Recabinet also models the subtle EQ shaping of 6L6 and EL34 power tubes, as well as 9 different industry-standard microphones in over a dozen positions. [ learn more ]

Hold on to your tube amps!

Unlike digital amp modelers, we’re not trying to replace the tube-based sound that you love. Recabinet leaves the preamp tone up to you - you can use it with any preamp - from rack preamps to the preamp section of your tube amp head - simply connect the FX send or line out of your amp to your computer audio interface (just make sure you have a cabinet or load box connected so you don’t fry the tubes!) [ learn more ]

Makes amp simulators sound more like the real thing.

Recabinet makes digital amp modelers such as Peavey Revalver Mk III, Native Instruments Guitar Rig, and the Line 6 Pod series sound a lot more convincing. Just disable or substitute the existing speaker simulation in these products and use Recabinet to do the speaker simulation.

Compatible with everything.

Recabinet is a library of convolution impulse responses, a technology that until now has been primarily used to create hyper-realistic reverb based on real-world spaces and coveted vintage reverb gear. The Recabinet library will load into any convolution reverb plugin - effectively transforming these great reverb plugins into virtual guitar cabinets.

Russ Parrish: stop steeling our music... blow by blow breakdown of what it costs to create a musical masterpiece

Apparently, we've already had our record downloaded illegally over 30,000 times on some shit called bit-torrent. That's pretty amazing, and I'm glad we are in such high demand, but people, records cost money to make. check it out.........

Costs for "Feel the Steel"

1. $7,934.43 in pizza expenses.
2. $94,874.33 in drugs and beer.
3. $435,546.64 in studio time.
4. $ 68,445.78 in hired studio musicians. ( gotta sound good, right? )
5. 1,000,365.56 in private jet flights for Monte Lippman, record company pres.
6. $ 32.00 Gas for Camaro to and from studio.
7. $00. strippers. (fortunately, the strippers are helping us pay for some of this)

Obviously, we are pretty deep in the hole to Universal Records. So help us out and BUY the record when it comes out. If you know someone who got it for free, kick them in the nuts.

do the right thing buy it now... it's awful to think these guys might miss out on a few more sacks of coke and bus load of hookers...

Anton Lindsjö: wins solo crazyness competition

Thanks to Magnus Olsson for providing me with the update, now Paul Gilbert and co have picked their winner:
WE HAVE A WINNER!

After more than 2 months and intensive listening Paul Gilbert has appointed Anton Lindsjö in Uppsala to the winners in SOLO CRAZINESS 2009 on the grounds:

Congratulations! Your soloing has both strong rhythmic content and super fast and clean lines. You did a great job playing with the Chord changes too. But most of all, your playing has so much CONFIDENCE and power. Keep playing!

We congratulate Anton to glory, fame and the price which is an Ibanez Prestige guitar!
While we fit to congratulate all the finalists to the final placement, and earnings of cables and strings from Planet Waves and D'Addario. Paul comments on these contributions as follows:

Jannicke Damkvist: I like your tone and vibrato a lot. You play some very solid lines that need to be cleaned up slightly or locked into the groove more, but overall I really like the way you SOUND. Keep playing!

Fredric Forsman: Really nice tone and phrasing as well. Be careful with the solid playing, it might need to be cleaned up a little. But your tone and ENERGY are great when you play phrases at normal speed. Keep playing!

Dennis Petersen: It's refreshing to hear some clean tones. Your rhythmic and Melodic SENSE are excellent. Your vibrato and groove are both very good, but you can make them even better with practice and time. Keep playing!

Christopher Vest: You got some good rock guitar vocabulary. Bender, hammer-ons, wah-wah pedal, etc. Just keep adding new ideas to train your fingers and your ears. Keep playing!
