News: google riding the wave

in this era of Twitter and Facebook, with hundreds of millions of internet users hooked on letting the world know what they're up to in short bursts of text, it's taken the confidence of search and advertising giant Google to believe there's room in the market for yet another service.

With today's announcement that Google Wave, a new service enabling users to exchange messages, images, songs and videos in real time, will be released to 100,000 hand-picked Google enthusiasts in September, technology correspondents are gearing up for months of speculation at the impact of yet another bold announcement from the Californian company.

The premise of Wave is relatively simple, in that it offers many of the same tools as are currently available with instant messaging services like Gmail Chat. But the plan to integrate file-swapping, live editing of files, and many more features before the launch has led to a flurry of excited coverage speculating that current communication channels could potentially be rendered obsolete. “Wave is what email would look like if it were invented today,” claims Lars Rasmussen, who, with his brother Jens, has been responsible for much of the development behind Google Wave, initially devised in Sydney.

New: Microsoft sales sink another 17%

Talking of hand jobs:
Microsoft Corp. blamed weakness in the global PC and server markets for a sharp drop in quarterly revenue that badly missed Wall Street's forecasts.

Sales fell 17% to $13.1 billion in the company's fourth quarter ended June 30, far short of analysts' forecasts of $14.4 billion. It was the second consecutive quarter in which sales fell from year-ago levels. In the company's previous quarter, sales fell for the first time in Microsoft's 23-year history as a public company.

"The fourth quarter was one of the most difficult, but in some ways encouraging, in the company's history," said Microsoft Chief Financial Officer Chris Liddell on a conference call with analysts. "We are a stronger company than we were a year ago, but the economy continues to be challenging."
SELL!... there goes my BING SOE! LOL who cares!

Eddie Van Halen: gets a hand job!

Must have been listening to too much Steel Panther with that title:
Eddie Van Halen is said to be on the mend after undergoing surgery to treat increasing pain in his left hand.

"During the last leg of our tour, I started developing pain in my thumb and my pinky. I didn’t think much of it at the time," the guitarist says. "It got progressively worse to the point that about three months ago I wasn’t able to play at all. My pinky and my thumb were totally locked up and felt like there was something broken."

Breakfast part 2

News: guitar charity

As guitarists most of us collect gear. We need to have multiple guitars that all do basically the same thing just in a slightly different way creating a slightly different sound through different amps that do the same thing with slightly different voicings. And before you go getting all defensive saying "oh no, not ME! There's a HUGE difference in sound between my VOX AC30 and my Fender Princeton Reverb!" you can rest assured, that I (as a guitarist) know that there's a big sound difference to us. I'm less convinced it sounds all that different to the uninitiated or if it did, how many of them think it's the guitar or amp and not just the player?

Anyhoo, my point here is that most of collect or want to collect as much gear as we "need" (which basically means we want to collect as much gear as possible).

How many of you have honestly thought of giving something away though?

Not selling it to finance more gear, or trading it for something else. Not cashing in on it to pay the power bill. Just giving it away. Maybe even just giving it away to someone who doesn't even play guitar? Someone you don't even know.

How does THAT hit you?
yes count me in!

Guthrie Govan: suhr clinic

Guthrie Govan, in support of Suhr, took a trip up the east coast of the U.S. to demo and promote their guitars. This guitar clinic was less teaching about guitar playing and explaining and showing the different features of the guitars in Suhr's arsenal. We still got lots of tasty playing, though.

This was recorded at Chuck Levin's Washington Music Center in D.C., on July 22nd, 2009. As my camera only records clips that are about 1:30 long, I couldn't get the whole song (but at least one other person said they recorded each of his songs in their entirety), but this isn't bad.
