Jeff Kollman: winter tour dates

December 4, 2009 - L.A. all-stars CHAD SMITH'S BOMBASTIC MEATBATS, featuring guitarist Jeff Kollman (COSMOSQUAD, GLENN HUGHES), bassistKevin Chown (UNCLE CRACKER, TED NUGENT), and keyboardist Ed Roth (GLENN HUGHES, RONNIE MONTROSE), have scheduled several appearances with both co-founder Chad Smith and Kenny Aronoff (JOHN FOGERTY, IOMMI) alternating on drums.
Upcoming dates include shows at L.A.'s famed Baked Potato, the Mark & Brian Show on KLOS morning radio, the NAMM Convention, as well as a live DVD shoot for the Drum Channel on December 19 with both Smith and Aronoff on hand. "This band has developed a rare thing." states Kollman. "Chadhas had commitments over the summer with Chickenfoot and now with the Red Hot Chili Peppers who are writing daily for a 2010 release. Therefore, we called on heavyweight drummers Kenny Aronoff and Matt Sorum for recent tours to fill Chad's shoes. Both guys killed it and at the same time made it their own. This revolving drummer thing has worked out better than we could've ever hoped."
Adds Aronoff: "Playing with the Bombastic Meatbats is amazing on so many levels. I love the Meatbats' music because it touches on many styles of music like, rock, R&B, country, Texas swing, jazz, Latin, blues, Second Line, funk, fusion and more. You have to not only know the songs and your parts, but you need to be able to groove, play in time and, most importantly, be able to listen to everyone else so you can improvise and react to everyone else at a split second. For me it's not just about drumming - it's about MUSIC at the highest level. Communication both as a listener and speaker through the vehicle of music."
The BOMBASTIC MEATBATS live schedule reads as follows:

Dec. 12 - Safety Harbor Kids benefit, Malibu, CA www.safetyharborkids.org
Dec. 13 - Baked Potato, North Hollywood, CA

News: all you need to know about stomp box effects

Effects units are packaged by their manufacturers, and used by musicians, in various sizes, the most common of which are the stomp-box and the rack-mount unit. A "Stomp box" is a metal box, containing the circuitry, which is placed on the floor in front of the musician and connected in line with, say, the guitar cord. The box is typically controlled by one or more foot-pedal on-off switches and typically contains only one or two effects. A second type of effects unit may contain the identical electronic circuit, but is mounted in a standard 19" equipment rack. Usually, however, rack-mount effects units contain several different types of effects. They are typically controlled by knobs or switches on the front panel, and often by a MIDI digital control interface. Musicians who prefer multiple stomp-boxes use “Off-boards”; these may be simply pieces of plywood with several stomp-box units fastened to the plywood and connected in series. Rack Mounted effects or off-boards can combine several effects in one unit, and can include analog controls such as pedals or knobs.

Steve Vai: an evening with the master

Instrumental master classes have changed a lot in the half-century or so since touring virtuosi such as Andres Segovia and Yehudi Menuhin would hold sessions with groups of local prodigies in venerable conservatories or concert halls.

A new-millennium variation took place last Tuesday night at the back of a shopping plaza in suburban Bolton, Ont., northwest of Toronto, behind a McDonald's, and across Highway 50 from a Wal-Mart and a Canadian Tire – headquarters for the RockStar Music School & Concert Hall, with a staff of six instructors and a fully equipped mini-theatre. Yes, Jack Black's School of Rock has been institutionalized.

The very special guest guitar instructor tonight is Steven Vai, 49, part of a generation of speed demons such as Joe Satriani, Eddie Van Halen and John Petrucci who came to prominence in 1970s and 1980s, and who are still revered by boomer and Gen-X-aged hobbyists.

GUITAR INSTITUTE UNVEILS 2010 GUITAR SCHOLARSHIPS WORTH OVER £7500!

The Guitar Institute, part of London’s Institute of Contemporary Music Performance (ICMP), in partnership with Yamaha and Total Guitar Magazine, is proud to announce the launch of the 2010 guitar scholarships programme. These sought after awards are for study on the Institute’s renowned one-year Higher Diploma guitar course, commencing October 2010, with one fully-funded place to be awarded to the winner (worth £5,250) plus a partially funded place for the runner-up (worth £2,625).

The Higher Diploma is a specialist one-year full-time course, developed by the Institute to train and develop students of guitar, bass, drums and vocals for a career in the music industry. It was the first full-time course of its kind ever developed in the UK and achieving a place on the course continues to be an aspirational goal for young musicians. The Institute, widely recognised as one of Europe’s leading schools of modern music, counts on an unrivalled teaching and visiting faculty, many of whom regularly work and tour with some of the music industry’s greatest artists. This faculty includes such names as Hugh Burns, Martin Goulding and Dario Cortese. ICMP alumni can be found throughout today’s music industry, working with high profile artists such as; The Noisettes, Kylie Minogue, Paolo Nutini, Will Young and KT Tunstall.

Closing date for entries is 5th March 2010 and there is always a great demand. The scholarships are open to anyone from the UK or internationally and the application form is available to download from www.icmp.co.uk. Brian Larkin: fretless in Seattle

I could never work out how you play one of these instruments, so I asked Brian. Brian Larkin responds:
There are dots at 3, 5, 7, etc. as with most guitars, but they don't help much; they're where the middle of the space between the frets would be, and on a fretless you have to play precisely where the fret itself would be. So it's all by feel/ear... If I hit a bad note I try to cover it up with a nice wide vibrato. =P I used to practice Moto Perpetuo on this guitar, so that helped me work out some of the intonation issues... :)

Chris Broderick, Marty Friedman: mustaine divides to conquer

Mustaine: "Well, having a new guitar player with Chris Broderick, Chris is a wunderkind. I thought that I had outdone myself with [former MEGADETH guitarist] Marty Friedman, who is a great guitar player. Chris is everything that Marty wanted to be and then some, because Chris is a guitar player who loves playing guitar, who loves playing metal music and I believe that Marty just wanted to play music in general and he didn't really care too much about what was going on with MEGADETH, he was kind of always doing his solo stuff. Chris is much more of a team player. No offense to Marty, 'cause Marty is a good guy, but the dude put on a kimono for a reason. He moved over to Japan and he loves the Japanese culture. I like Japan, too, but I wouldn't live there. I would feel like I was in the middle of outer space because of the language barrier and the food. I mean, I've been there before, and I'll tell you what — there's only so much sushi you can eat."
