Roy Fulton: DoFret Blue interview

Q: What's the secret to playing blues with conviction?

A: All of the great players that I grew up listening to and continue to admire have one thing in common. FEEL!! When they play, they touch the heart, body and soul in some way. They make you feel good, happy, exhilarated and it’s definitely more than just the notes. It’s a feeling! It’s the tone, intensity and the belief in the music and the 100% delivery of ‘the note’ at that very moment. I try to play with feeling and connect with the music. It’s not so much as: think of the notes and try to play clever licks – it’s more like: let your emotions come through in the playing. You just have to listen to Roy Buchanan’s ‘Rescue Me’ to hear what I mean. When that searing, biting Telecaster of his kicks in, it just gets me every time!
