Edward Box: ytsejam interview

Metal is a type of music that will never die - the enticement of loud guitars and raw energy remain the big impact of the music that we all know and love - combine great songs, big melodic hooks, and virtuoso musicianship - and it gets fairly self-explanatory from there. A band that has been making waves within the melodic metal scene is Lion Music artists Vendetta, a quartet that features the nimble fingered axework from both Edward Box and Pete Thompson alongside the powerful rhythm section of bassist Gary Foalle & drummer Lee Lamb, balancing the tuneful with the technical.
The band's second album Heretic Nation has been unleashed and features the same had edged metal that Tyranny of Minority executed - not defying the laws of tradition; what else would you expect? Coming back around with a new album and a new drummer, Edward Box speaks about the what has beholden on the band since their last offering.

Torben Enevoldsen: ytsejam interview

Tommy Hash: First off, how did this record come about - when did the idea to make the Acacia Avenue happen?

Torben Enevoldsen: "I guess the idea came to me after I had written a few songs in this somewhat softer style. I liked the direction and the idea of doing something a little bit different for a change. Growing up I was listening to bands like Boston, Toto, Journey and Van Halen, and later on Dokken, Giant, Winger and so on, so it felt very natural."

TH: Why was it that you wanted to move more into a melodic rock/AOR direction as opposed to the power metal of Section A?

TE: "It wasn’t an intentional decision at all, it just kinda happened. I dedicated most of 2008 to writing new material and I decided from the get go, that I wouldn’t let genre restrict me in any way. After I had written the first few songs and I got the idea for Acacia Avenue however, I started to work more consciously in this direction."

Borislav Mitic: ytsejam interview

A guitarist with extreme speed and melodic stamina, six string slinger Borislav Mitic's new album, The Absolute (Lion Music) hearkens the glory days of Shrapnel-era shredding, when it wasn't just about speed, it was about invoking melodies on top of all that with insane intensity. With the darkened "For the Chosen," the sophisticated groove of "Within all Existence," the sinister riffage of "The Prize of Eternity," to orgy of arpeggios on the title track - he covers all the bases and keeps everything in the metal mindset while it all reigns with catchy overtones.

Yet it is no surprise that this summons the 'Shrapnel' sound, as Mitic is alumni from that label, inking a deal in them 1998. Along the way, the likes of UFO's Phil Mogg was interested in the guitarist to possibly co-write a record and fill in for Michael Schenker, however contractual obligations would prevent that - yet he has scored endorsements from various guitar gear manufacturers and collaborated with many other artists eventually finding his way back to doing another instrumental work and inking a deal with Lion Music. With the idea of an extreme metal project possibly on the horizon as well as being hot off the heels of the new record, Mitic speaks of the musical madness that he is involved with.

We're down in Texas this month, for the sort of thing Stevie Ray Vaughan did so well. This typical Texas blues chord riff in E major combines a walking bass line with percussive upstrokes for a really huge sound.
Use strict down-up strumming, playing the bass notes with downstrokes and the open-string chords with upstrokes, and use your fretboard hand to mute the upstroke chords very quickly. Don't be afraid to hit the strings HARD for the proper SRV sound!
