News: Obama to legislate against Theft2.0

http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=18815

"The White House's vision is perhaps a prelude to the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, which will go before Congress later this year. The bill would make P2P or BitTorrent client development a criminal offense if the distributed software was used for infringement. It also implements an interesting provision called "imminent infringement", which allows the government to charge people who they think might be about to infringe with a civil offense (for example if you searched "torrent daft punk"). This is among the first official "thought crime" provisions to be proposed by the U.S. government. The bill also makes it a criminal offense to bypass DRM."

Erol Parlak: shredding the Turkish bağlama.

The baglamas (Greek μπαγλαμάς) or baglamadaki (Greek μπαγλαμαδάκι), a long necked bowl-lute, is a plucked string instrument used in Greek music; it is a version of the bouzouki pitched an octave higher (nominally D-A-D), with unison pairs on the four highest strings and an octave pair on the lower D. Musically, the baglamas is most often found supporting the bouzouki in the Piraeus style of rembetika.
The body is often hollowed out from a piece of wood (skaftos construction) or else made from a gourd, but there are also baglamas with staved backs. Its small size made it particularly popular with musicians who needed an instrument transportable enough to carry around easily or small enough to shelter under a coat. During parts of the 20th century, players of the bouzouki and baglamas were persecuted by the government, and the instruments were smashed by the police. The name comes from Turkish bağlama, a similar instrument.

Freddie Nelson: metalichika interview!

Jenn says:
I am SO STOKED and SO HAPPY to share this interview with Freddie Nelson (collaborator with Paul Gilbert, Too Tall Jones, Triple X) with all of you. This was a sort of mini-collaboration or project of it’s own: it took six months. That is a lot of time to spend on a project of words, and I am so grateful that Freddie gave so freely of his time. I thought he wouldn’t ‘talk’ to me – certainly not as much as he did. (it’s 16 pages long, zero fluff!) So it’s really incredible…

Matthew Mills: Forgotten Realm super deal

Shred Guy has a super deal on this CD
Virginia's Forgotten Realm is a neo-classical shredding power metal band in the tradition of Dio and Rainbow and Yngwie Malmsteen, with guitar whiz Matthew Mills and leather-lunged vocalist David Fefolt and ex-Manowar drummer Rhino. (80s rock aficionados may remember Fefolt as vocalist in Shrapnel shredheads Masi and also in Hawk, a Lizzy Borden-ish dyed-and-sprayed Sunset Strip band that at various times featured future Bulletboy Lonnie Vincent, Cult / Guns 'n' Roses drummer Matt Sorum, Racer X / Judas Priest drummer Scott Travis, and guitarist Doug Marks of the Metal Method guitar ads in the back of musicians' magazines.) Put these guys alongside Dragonforce in the new wave of arpeggio-laden fist-pumping power metal for sure, although I’d take Forgotten Realm over that cringe-inducing hyperkinetic band any day of the week. But like Dragonforce’s records, Power And Glory is a journey back to the time when metal was synonymous with songs about sorcery, multi-octave vocal melodies and sixty-fourth-note Paganini-inspired guitar workouts.

Patrick Healy: shredknowledge interview

"Corn Snakes" - Patrick Healy

MARK
what are you top ten guitar influences? and top 5 whole band favorates? plus what in your cd player right now.?

Patrick Healy: Before I became a guitarist I was always influenced by Koji Kondo. I remember being five years old and taking my older brother's Nintendo Gameboy, going to the level in the game with the best music and putting the speaker up to my ear. The emotion in those scores affects me to this day. As a guitar player, people like Zakk Wylde, Randy Rhoads, etc. were important for my development, though these two factors really got me going:

The first was Joe Satriani. As soon as I saw a performance of him playing "Flying in a Blue Dream" it blew my mind how beautiful a guitar could sing. It was the link I hadn't found between my love for guitar and my past with Koji Kondo's beautiful score writing.

The second was Warren Robert. I went to a local guitar camp and heard him shredding his heart out in the other room. I was instantly in awe. He gave us all a big booklet, a shred workshop of sorts, with the history of this "shred" stuff and all of these players I hadn't investigated yet. It was like opening Pandora's Box of guitar, I had opened it, and there was no way I was ever going to be able to close it.

I'd say my favourite artists would be Pink Floyd, Devin Townsend, Buckethead, Neil Young, and anything Joe Satriani is involved with.
