Quote from Pete Feenstra, 14.09.2011.

"Sad to say that the Boom Boom Club legend Big Derek (Mackerness) died last
Monday 12/9/11. Many of you at the Boom Boom Club will know Big D, aka 'Derek the door' for his brusque but efficient manner. In fact he has been helping me with live
music shows since 1987 and before that he was an administrator at the
London youth games - he was the guy with the clip board and whistle.
Derek always had a huge passion for music, something that saved his life
some years ago. His then girl friend died in appalling circumstances and he
all but gave up, except he has set his heart on going to a Walter Trout
concert in Shepherds Bush. He duly was first in the queue and about two
hours later when the queue had swollen to about a thousand, the band showed
up, jumped out the tour bus and Walter purposefully strode past the snaking
line of people to embrace Derek, shouting; "Hey, Big D!!!" I think it saved
his life, gave him a purpose and meant he was able to help with hundreds of
shows over the next 16 years.
Deke, as he liked to be called, was a passionate loyal, honest, and
committed person, qualities that he carried with him to his grave. His love
of music and Arsenal FC (have to forgive him that blemish, lol) occupied
most of his time, though when not immersed in that he was a keen
genealogist and had managed to trace his family back over hundreds of
years.
He will be much missed."
Walter Trout dedicates 'Say Goodbye to the Blues' to BIG DEREK. RIP - LONDON 24.11.11.
