Dave Martone: Fierce Guitar: Intervallic Arpeggios

Fierce Guitar: Intervallic Arpeggios:
Dave Martone shows you how to combine an intervallic approach to playing arpeggios with some wicked hybrid picking

When I dig into a burning solo, I like to combine different techniques that can give my lines an interesting feel. In this lesson, we’re going to combine an intervallic approach to playing arpeggios with some wicked hybrid picking.

Displacing certain notes in the arpeggio and combining them in odd groupings creates a flowing, angular feel that will make people say, “Hey! What is that?” These examples will involve a lot of string skipping, so in order to play them at breakneck speeds, we’ll need to use some hybrid picking. Essentially, hybrid picking is when you use the other fingers on your picking hand—usually the middle and ring fingers— in addition to the flatpick. Hot-rod country players have been doing this forever, and we’re going to steal it and combine it with some pure rock fury. more

News: Shrapnel release - This Is Shredding, Vol. 2

And once again, theze are some of the most technical, fastest, melodic lead guitarist in the world.

This Is Shredding, Vol. 2

The Shrapnel sound has survived nearly three decades and many of the today s great young metal bands got their inspiration from the artists on this second volume, also the labels back catalog is enjoying a renaissance of interest in this important guitar oriented music.

1. Y.R.O. Racer X – Paul Gilbert
2. The Thinking Machine – Vinnie Moore
3. Sky Rider – Borislav Mitic
4. Images Cacophony – Marty Friedman & Jason Becker
5. Ripped To Shreds – George Bellas
6. Overseas Evolution – Tony MacAlpine
7. Acid Lips – Richie Kotzen
8. Stand Yer Ground – Darren Housholder
9. Nothin But Pickin – Scott Stine
10. Country Boy With Some Rope – Derek Taylor
11. Slap Crackle & Pop – Todd Duane
12. The Death Of Ludwig II – Bernd Steidl

If you think This is Shredding Vol. 1 was a masterpiece of guitar shred… Then U ain’t seen or heard nuthin’ yet! This is Shredding Vol. 2 will definately and once again turn, twist, and spiral your earz… All the while, wrap’n and sqeeze’n your brainz inside out w/ musical notes like you’ve never heard them before… With Shrapnel Record Label owner Mike Varney’s understanding of these type of xtreme musicians & guitar playerz and their super musical abilities, he has successfully paired these young “shredders” with some of the best musicians in the world. Furthermore, giving these young katz a chance to be heard by the masses. The production and mastering are second to none of course… The songwriting seems to be a little more melodic then Vol. 1 with a brighter and richer sound.

Parting Shot: The songs, the players, and the overall project has been well thought out and is a great compilation of tunes for newbies and veteran shred headz alike. And once again, theze are some of the most technical, fastest, melodic lead guitarist in the world. Simply put… THEZE GUYZ TAKE NO PRIZONERZ !!!

Jeff Loomis: shredding is great... time to record another solo CD

Is shredding a good thing?

Yes, shredding is great, if you can combine elements of feel and emotion within it. Unfortunately, there are players that do it all the time without putting any soul into it.

What are you currently working on, and what is your goal as a player?

We're on tour with Nevermore right now, and I'm also working on my new solo CD. I'll probably start recording in December. more

Prashant Aswani, Alex Ehrsam: in conversation at shred knowledge

To begin, tell us a bit about your music roots, & how old were you when you picked up the guitar?
PA: My roots in music come from India. I studied Tabla for many years and then started playing guitar when I turned 13.

2) I'm a big fan of your 2d album "Duality". "Sonically speaking" has a real different vibe, really Intimate music, less speed, I sense I'm listening to Radiohead sometimes! Where does that ambiance come from?
PA: Sonically Speaking was my first solo album that I self produced. I was going for a real polished sound on this album. I listen to a lot of ethereal music and the influence. I recently started listening to Radiohead. Great band. more

He just played an amazing hard rock set last year and many of us were pleased he might have been doing that again so we could see it once again. "Gary did things with a guitar that most guitar players can only dream about. His music in regards to THIN LIZZY or his later solo efforts with Phil [Lynott] and Glenn Hughes should be known as some of the best hard rock ever made. From 'Empty Rooms' to 'Over The Hills', it is with a huge loss that this legend is now gone. He might be gone now but his music will forever speak to us! "Crank it to 11, Moore! Phil and a few friends are waiting to jam!"

Gary Moore: Gibson Remembers Gary Moore

The rock world lost one of its great performers yesterday with the passing of guitar legend Gary Moore. Moore died while on vacation in the town of Estepona in the Costa del Sol region of southern Spain. He was 58 years old.

Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Moore first made his mark in the hard rock band, Skid Row (not to be confused with the later band). Inspired by the fiery blues playing of Albert King, Jimi Hendrix and Peter Green (who took Moore under his wing when the young Irishman was breaking in), Moore combined the feel and subtlety of the finest blues players with the speed and intensity of hard rock’s heaviest hitters. more

Dreamfullofzen:
Hey All,
Another noodling around zentar video. Last vid I was enjoying some Lydian sounds, but the whole point of me doing the zentar was to have access to sounds of the east, microtones & Ornamental embellishments. I've tried playing some Maqams on Duduk, but not with much luck, mostly due to not having the technical chops yet to be able to perform accurate microtonal stuff on Duduk (hard enough playing regular tunning on it!).

I'm fairly well versed on Hijaz's modal construction, but I've wanted to use more of Rast & Bayati, since those two modes are particular to Egyptian folk music heard commonly in allot of tunes. I can play them ok, but constructing phrases around the tone levels of these modes is still something new to me.

Other way, enjoy the noodling

Sam Coulson: super tribute to Gary Moore

Sam Coulson:
I was utterly shocked and saddened to learn of Gary's untimely death today. The world has been deprived of one of the most amazing guitarists. My thoughts are with Gary's family and friends at this sad time.

I wanted to show my respect and appreciation for this giant of blues and rock by doing some unrehearsed improv straight from my heart.

Gary influence on my playing is huge, I have long admired his ability to control his left hand vibrato in the most soulful way. Also his control over the instruments pots changed the way I look at the guitar. Not to mention his mind boggling flurys of pentatonic notes! It's safe to say Gary Moore was a guitar giant and I am deeply saddened that he is no longer with us.
