News: RhythmStrumming - A New, yet Old Way of Playing the Acoustic Guitar

RhythmStrumming: A New, yet Old Way of Playing the Acoustic Guitar

If you've ever played guitar, you are probably familiar with the question, “what style of music do you play”? Most people usually say something like rock, folk, blues, jazz, bluegrass, or maybe just shrug, and say something like “I don't know...,” or “I'm not really sure...”

Personally, I’ve never felt comfortable being asked this question because I don’t have an answer that would both mean something to people and be accurate at the same time. I like almost all styles of music, but I play them in a way that, until now, hasn't really had a name. After years of watching other guitarists and asking questions, I made the decision to call this style of guitar playing RhythmStrumming.

At this point, you might be wondering, what exactly is RhythmStrumming, and how do I learn how to do it?

Well, let me explain.

You're all familiar with the terms lead guitarist, and rhythm guitarist right? Well for those of you who don't already know, a lead guitar player typically plays single note fills, or solos as a part of the front, or lead section of the band, and a rhythm guitarist usually plays 2 - 6 strings at a time in a series of chord progressions as a part of the band's background, or rhythm section.

But what if a guitarist is playing alone, or accompanying a singer? In these settings, just a lead line, or just a few chord progressions can sound rather inadequate. At the very least, strumming needs to be embellished, and well defined in order to serve as a satisfying “comp” (accompaniment), or stand alone piece.

By incorporating some drum set like rhythmic accents, a basic strum can be instantly transformed into a stylized, stand-alone piece, or accompaniment. Since this approach relies most heavily on rhythm for it to sound good, I decided to call it RhythmStrumming.

Every other aspect of a guitarist’s performance can drop out, including bass fills, lead lines, and chords, but only when the rhythm drops out will the music be totally lost. Every piece of music contains a rhythmic “pulse,” and all of the temporal spaces between the pulses are known as “subdivisions.” You can think of the pulse as the part of the music you’d move your body to if you were dancing. In rock music, for example, the pulse is known as the “backbeat” and usually occurs on beats two, and four of every measure, or bar, of a song that is played with four beats per measure. The subdivisions are defined as all the smaller rhythmic parts, or accents both on, and between the pulses.

If you were playing an egg shaker with the tune, each sound of the shaker would be considered a rhythmic subdivision. If you want to play guitar as a RhythmStrummer, try to think of your up-and-down right-hand strokes as the subdivisions: they would match the sounds of an egg shaker, if it were present. Everything else you do should be thought of as an added layer to this underlying groove.

You can easily begin to understand this method by turning your radio dial to any rock station, and tapping your hand or foot along with the rhythm. Once you are comfortable with that, try to transfer that tapping to your right hand on the guitar strings, with or without a pick. All you have to do is mute the strings with your left hand by lightly touching them so only a percussive sound comes out when you strike them with your right hand – we don't want any notes or tones here. Imagine you are the drummer for a band, except you are creating a constant beat by strumming on your guitar, instead of on the drums.

Make sure you relax your right arm as much as possible and consciously feel the up-and-down motion, trying to make it as graceful and consistent as possible, as if your hand is dancing to the beat. Practicing this cannot be overdone, and it’s vitally important to getting a good rhythmic feel on your guitar. Once this becomes easy, you can let some of the strokes drop out, and they will still sound implied, as if there’s an egg shaker, or Moracca going on in the background of the listener’s imagination.

To get started with RhythmStrumming, please visit our website at http://RhythmStrummer.com, and check out some of our acoustic guitar lessons. We have plenty of free content available, including easy to learn acoustic guitar songs, techniques, and a free wordpress blog that's full of unique, and interesting classic rock videos, blues videos, fun music history facts, stories, and a few surprises every now, and again.

Of course, all of our lessons reinforce the unique concept of RhythmStrumming, and when applied properly, are guaranteed to improve your overall rhythm, musicianship, and also make you a better guitarist. Alberto Rigoni: free track from new album

Alberto Rigoni gets 'Free' with Porcupine Tree drummer Gavin Harrison - FULL STREAMING TRACK

"Free", the first track of Alberto Rigoni's new album "Rebirth" (out on May 23rd by Nightmare Records), is now available in full streaming at the following link: http://www.reverbnation.com/play_now/song_8628040

The song features also boosting contributions by drummer Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree), guitar player Tommy Ermolli (TwinSpirits) and keyboard player Federico Solazzo.

Rigoni comments about hooking up with Harrison for 'Free':

"Back in January 2009, I started composing a new solo album. The goal was to invite some of my favorite musicians to join me on some of the songs. One of them was Gavin Harrison who most people know from Porcupine Tree and King Crimson. I was not sure he was interested, but I contacted him anyway. He told me that if he liked the feel of the song, he would do it.
At that point I thought I might have a chance [laughter]. A couple of hours after reading his email, I took the bass in my hand and started composing the tune called 'Free.' The day after, I met guitarist Tommy Ermolli (TwinSpirits), recorded some tracks, and then I sent the tune to Gavin. I didn't track any drum loops and I left all the parts up to him. Some days later he sent me back the tracks and they were amazing! I couldn't have asked for anything better -- I was thrilled."

News: Rotosound add Swing Bass range

Rotosound have just added 45-100 gauge nickel strings to the Swing Bass range, their popular round wound bass string range.

Round wound strings were developed by Rotosound at the behest of the Who’s John Entwhistle, who was looking for a brighter, more piano like bass tone to complement his trebly and fleet fingered lead bass style. Introduced in 1962, with widespread usage since the 1970’s, they changed the bass sound instantly, and have led the pack ever since.

Bass players insist on resilient, versatile and consistent strings, which give them the sound they want. The Swing Bass range offers 4 to 8 string sets in a wide range of gauges, made from either stainless steel or nickel, with a choice of double ball ends or not and even non standard lengths. All have the red silk ends making them instantly recognisable as Rotosound.

The new 45-100 gauge nickel strings ( Product Code RS66LN ) are manufactured to the same high specification as the Swing Bass Stainless Steel sets, but are much, much smoother to play. The slightly muted, smoother tone, with the vintage vibe of the nickel plate makes them a good alternative to the punchier sounding stainless steel. These strings are kinder to your fingers with their softer feel and give a warmer sound which develops the more you play them.

Árni Hjörvar the bass player of The Vaccines uses the RS66LN 45-100 Swing Bass Nickel strings to get his distinctive sound. The Vaccines were recently placed third in the BBC’s Sound of 2011 poll, and have been nominated for MTV’s ‘Best New Band of 2011’ award. BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe declared their demo single ‘If You Wanna’ released summer 2010 the ‘Hottest Record in the World’ and their first single ‘Wreckin’ Bar (Ra Ra RA)’ was Q Magazine’s ‘Track Of The Day’, following its release in November 2010.

All Rotosound strings are produced using a highly secretive, quality manufacturing process. Many are still made today the same as they were back in the 1960’s helping them retain their unique tone and sound, and Rotosound are passionate about keeping it that way. Allan Holdsworth: the god father of Djent?!

Djent reaching the big time... a new musical movement driven by the maverick spirit of Allan Holdsworth... no simple songs... explorations in soundscapes and super legato playing.

"That's a first," TesseracT's vocalist Dan Tompkins informs us as he looks on at the three men excitedly comparing their guitars on the couch - Misha Mansoor of US band Periphery, plus Brits Acle Kahney from TesseracT and Monuments man John Browne. He's right. TG has brought about the first ever djent guitarist summit in Bristol today. In person, anyway…
"We've known about each other and talked online for six years," says Misha. "We've always talked about this, but now it's finally happening!"
This is the first date of the UK League Of Extraordinary Djentlemen tour (djenius pun) that's carrying with it a sense that something very special is happening in metal. These three progressive bands that make up the bill represent a new wave that's not just exciting for metal guitar playing, but also the way that it's reaching out to fans around the world from such humble beginnings.
As with most 'new' waves or sub-genres in music, there are actually a few years of hard work and experimentation behind djent. But it started with just a chord and a band: all roads lead back to Meshuggah. Whether the Swedish band like it or not, they are the (shuggah) daddies of djent.
"The word 'djent' is onomatopeia for that really hard metallic picking sound of four notes" Periphery's Misha Mansoor
"It's pronounced 'gent' and it's a word that I found on the Meshuggah forum," explains Periphery's affable Misha. "Fredrik [Thordendal, Meshuggah guitarist] was the one who started [using the word]. It was just onomatopoeia for the really hard metallic picking of four notes [a powerchord with an added 5th]. You know the song Soul Burn by Meshuggah? That's the sound." more

Your bio tells a great story of being in the right places with the right people , hows it going with shredguy ? is this another good stroke of luck ?

I actually was turned onto ShredGuy by 2 people, first awareness was through Rusty Cooley, 2nd with a fellow shredder by the name of  Pete Pachio in 08' of whom we did a re-make of my demo song Flight of the blue phoenix (a demo song to Mike Varney Shrapnel records back in the early 90's) , Mike McDowell was kind enough to add us to the Shredding Across The World Vol. 2 release.  He then added me on the roster of Vol. 3 with G-THEORY, which I redifinedin the release of INNERPLANETARIUM with of course a full band.
What do shredguy do for you as alot of guys just do their own thing and deals with record companies are quite rare arent they ?
ShredGuy has done alot in the way of getting contacts and full page adds in guitar world, guitar legends, fuzz, guitar plus, fire works and more to come. He has really taken more of a noticeable individual focus on the artist as well as been out to spread the focus on the label as well.not to mention he has a line of shirts that kick ass! more
