Tony MacAlpine: guitar muse interview

Obviously you’ve had to put a tremendous amount of time in practicing both piano and guitar. You’ve talked before about good practicing versus bad practicing, but I’m wondering if you could give our readers any tips for maximizing practice time.

Most of the time when musicians have a tendency to practice something, well they say it’s practice, but it actually involves them going into a practice room and just doing what they can do and then they just come out and do it again.

I think that practicing is more of a self-discovery. Good practice habits means trying to develop things you might have found interesting or might not have been exposed to – so expose yourself to that. Maybe have some listening time and learn with your ears as well as your eyes and your hands. Reading is also important.

All these things are meant to educate your mind musically. That’s an important aspect for me. People say they have a practice schedule they get in and they do this or that. I kind of work with what I think really needs to be focused on. One of the things I’m very thankful for is that I play piano so I don’t have to practice guitar only. I can spend time practicing piano as well and that actually helps with my guitar playing. So I can play some pieces on one that I might not have played (on the other) so I can understand some pieces conceptually, theoretically and compositionally in the music and that helps me as a guitar player.

"Good practice habits means trying to develop things you might have found interesting or might not have been exposed to – so expose yourself to that."

Do you find that your practice is typically goal oriented? I imagine that when the record was being recorded you might be practicing and focusing on different things than when you’re about to go on tour with Steve Vai.

I really have to spend quite a bit of time when I’m preparing for something. [I'm] learning parts and perfecting those parts by playing them repetitively and just getting to the point where I feel it and can make some music out of it. That comes from just old-fashioned shedding. (laughs) Getting in there and hammering those things out. There’s nothing that replaces that. I look forward to being able to go inside a practice room and get results. Going in one day and coming out with a building block and knowing that when you go back in tomorrow that you’re not going to have to do the same thing again. more

David Gilmour: to get deluxe rereleases

Pink Floyd are re-releasing all of their studio albums in new editions on September 26. In addition, the rock titans will be putting out new, deluxe versions of three of their most-cherished albums – The Dark Side of the Moon (September 26), Wish You Were Here (November 7) and The Wall (February 27).

Now, drummer Nick Mason has revealed that more of the special editions (which feature alternate and live tracks) will be released for other Floyd albums. Could Animals be next? “We will do some more sort of in-depth versions of other albums, but I don’t know what we’ve got in the pipeline for that, yet,” he told Billboard.com.

As for the bonus material on the first three editions, Mason said he really enjoyed a different version of “Wish You Were Here” that featured violin.

“When I heard that for the first time, I couldn’t for the life of me understand why we never put that on record in the first place,” he said. “I felt like, ‘This is great! Why didn’t we use this?!’” more

I'm sure to get yet another copy or Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were here :)

George Lynch: Dokken docks don dokken

Sorry could not resist the title...

George Lynch has told Classic Rock Revisited that he has formed a new band with Dokken alumni Jeff Pilson (bass) and “Wild” Mick Brown (drums) called Tooth and Nail, named after a Dokken album. “That’s Dokken without Don,” Lynch explained. “The record is called Dump the Chump.”

Pilson, who now plays in Foreigner, is a very capable vocalist, taking the mic for the brilliant Lynch/Pilson album Wicked Underground in 2005. “When the Dokken reunion was not going to happen we just said, ‘Why don’t we just do this? This is way cooler,’” Lynch told Classic Rock Revisited. “Many years later, we are doing it and it is just for fun. It is half new material and it is half old Dokken material.” more

Michael Amott: arch enemy guitar player interviewed

How involved is Arch Enemy in actually choosing the lineups that you tour with?

We’re very involved. I mean, Angela, who sings in Arch Enemy, she manages the band as well for the past two years. So it’s very much in house. We’re very DIY. We’re very involved in every aspect of our career actually. We own our own recordings. We own our own merchandise and publishing, all those different aspects of the band and the business. When we put the tour together, it’s really important for us to have bands that we like and bands that we think our fans will enjoy, but still keep it kind of death metal. So yeah, we’re involved in it, to answer your question [laughs].
You mentioned about how you guys have been self-managed for a while now [since 2008].

Has the band ever thought about continuing the DIY spirit and actually releasing your own music in the future?

We thought about it. I mean, our record label deal is up now with Century Media Records. We had a licensing agreement, I should call it, with Century Media, who we’ve been working with for many years. We had a new deal with them in 2005, but actually this new album Khaos Legions was the last album with that deal. I don’t know what we’re going to do now moving forward. It’s kind of a different landscape out there now [laughs]. A lot of bands are trying those different models. We’re watching them closely to see how that works out for them. more

Leslie West: stoic in the face of disaster

"I don't think there is another attitude," West tells Billboard.com from the New Jersey rehabilitation facility where he's being taught how to live without the leg after it was removed just above the knee on June 20 in Memphis, due to complications from diabetes. "I cried a couple fuckin' times. I look down — 'Where is it?!' You still feel the nerves and stuff like that. I had to make a decision — lose my leg or lose my life. What are you gonna do?

"But I'll tell you," the guitarist adds, "it's a good thing it wasn't one of my arms. Then I'd be really fucked." more

Jonny Barvo: Violence In Your Cereal

Nothing too fancy in this video. Just a straight forward recording.

I had been in a HUGE writing slump and didn't even play guitar for days at a time (which is very rare for me). I think I even went over a week without touching a guitar!

I had a lot of awesome riffs, but I was really trying to force myself to write on a 6 string, in drop C. So after a month of sitting on these riffs with no progress I said "Fuck it!" and picked up my Loomis and immediately the song just fell into place. Was really weird.

So here it is. It ended up having a REALLY strong Nevermore/Loomis vibe to it after adding the drums. I don't think I've ever written a song in straight triplets before, so maybe that's why.

The solos were improvised on the spot and were played through once. I think they ended up sounding pretty awesome so I kept them. The only part I had to re-record was the final string skipping section of the final solo.

Ok, far too much typing now. I'll just say that the song title came from some misheard lyrics from a song i can't remember anymore. But I remembered that is was hilarious, so I named this song after it.
