Jason Becker: Guitar Player review World Premiere of Jason Becker: Not Dead Yet

March 3, 2012 marked the world premiere of the feature film, Jason Becker: Not Dead Yet from director Jesse Vile. The film chronicles the amazing life of Jason Becker—child prodigy, genius musician, and 20-year survivor of ALS.

Vile did a great job of covering Becker's childhood, helped by lots of home movie footage shot by Jason's folks and his uncle Ron. There are great shots of a young Jason with an acoustic guitar and a harmonica around his neck playing Bob Dylan tunes. You get classic footage of a teenage Jason shredding his adolescent brains out at his high school talent show. Interviews with Mike Varney, lifelong friend and Flipsyde guitarist Dave Lopez, and others shed light on how astounding Jason's playing was even at that young age. more

Mike Orlando, Mike Portnoy: Ultimate guitar interview

How well did you know guitarist Mike Orlando before joining Adrenaline Mob?

I actually had never heard of him when this music was presented to me. Me and Russ Allen had a long relationship and we’d been friends for many years and Symphony X had toured with Dream Theater several times. So me and him had an extended relationship and had been longing to do something together. But I had never heard Mike’s stuff. I think Mike was really the unknown element for me and I was immediately blown away not only by his playing but his writing. It’s like, “Oh, my god, where has this guy been hiding all these years? How is this guy not a guitar hero yet?” The riffs he writes and his shredding ability as a player, it was just immediately obvious that this kid—not this kid, this guy—was a total star in the making and just waiting for the right vehicle to give him the exposure. And here we are and Adrenaline Mob is absolutely gonna do that for him.

Mike Orlando is a very talented guitar player. more

This album, as well as your previous two, was recorded at your home studio named The Dungeon. Where did the name come from and can you describe the atmosphere within it?

Where the hell did that come from? It was probably my family, the wife and kids. “Where’s Dad?” “Oh, he’s down in his Dungeon.” I guess that kind of stuck. It’s in my basement and it’s a good atmosphere for us to work. I have some really good gear and the rooms sound good. We definitely do take our time with these records and it works well that we can have a place where we can just kind of hang out and experiment a little without freaking out about the time and losing money. There’s no real schedule, we’ll just go until we need to sleep. more

Mark Jansen: Epica new album details

Isaac: Well, let me just explain how we work. First we work on songs individually where you just write stuff at home and whenever you feel comfortable with what you already have, you put it on the table and then everybody can take that song and wok on it, so the first process of doing something individually… for me personally, I started writing right after "Design Your Universe". You go on the road and you fiddle around, and whenever I'm at home, I record my ideas and basically, it's not like half songs or anything, it's just riffs, and then whenever we're thinking of making a new album, I just go through all that and you make riffs here and there fit with each other and make songs like that. Mark [Jansen, guitar/vocals], who's the main composer in the band, apart from the intro, he wrote eight songs. We're basically three bandmembers writing the songs, Mark did the majority and then Coen [Janssen, keyboards] did two other songs and then I also wrote two songs. After you have the basic stuff, you give it to the other guys. For instance, between Mark and me, we are both guitar players and I really write music from a guitarist's point of view, so I write the technical riffs and the melody and the solo, whereas Mark will start with the orchestra. Just have some basic guitars and then put more emphasis on the orchestration and then he gives his song to me and says, "OK, that's your job. Make the guitar more interesting!" So that's how we work, and that basically started around June last year. We started sending stuff to each other and during the summer festival season it was mainly weekend shows, so we were just flying out to wherever we were playing and during the week was when you really had time to work. By the end of summer or by the end of August, we were finished with the pre-production and in September we started recording and the whole thing was finished halfway into December. Basically we have everything and then we go into the studio and do it for real. more Metal Shrine interview

Recorded on site at Soundwave Festival in Melbourne, I was lucky enough to chat with these guys who put on a killer show. A great bunch of guys who away from the mic are genuinely stoked yet surprised at the reaction they have received in Australia. Looking forward to chatting with again if I ever get the chance.
