ProgEnergy - Studio Report pt.1 "Nothing"

Michael Amott: joins Rotosound

Britain’s premier guitar string manufacturer, Rotosound have developed, together with a selection of their metal guitarist endorsees, a new range of signature strings. They can now announce the launch of signature string sets for guitarists Michael Amott (Arch Enemy / Carcass guitarist) , Paul Allender (Cradle of Filth) and Mikey Demus (Skindred).

Michael Amott is known for his involvement with a number of death metal / hard rock bands – namely Arch Enemy, Spiritual Beggars, and now ex-Carcass. These signature strings, influenced by Michael’s own personal style and are excellent for achieving wide vibrato, memorable melodic lead lines and furious sledgehammer riffs. Michael Amott said ‘they have great tone, they stay in tune, they don’t break easily, what more do you want? I rely on my MA11 Rotosound strings every night on stage and in the recording studios. Rotosound shreds’.

Long standing endorsee, Paul Allender, lead guitarist with extreme metal band Cradle of Filth has worked with Rotosound to develop his own custom gauge strings. He wanted strings that help him maintain that sharp air of sinister lead riffs whilst still allowing him to produce provocative melodic statements and clever counter harmonies.

Mikey Demus, one of Rotosound’s newer endorsees, plays guitar with Skindred, winners of the Best Live Act at 2011’s Golden God Awards. Known for his gut wrenchingly heavy guitar playing, full of raw metal power and soulful reggae, he needed strings able to work through these musical variables and survive their savage, energetic stage shows.

Michael, Paul and Mikey join an elite group of Rotosound endorsees, including Iron Maiden’s Steve Harris and the legendary Billy Sheehan, in having their own set of signature strings produced. Designed for their superb brilliance and strength these bespoke strings are a must for the discerning metal shredder. Like all Rotosound’s strings these have been produced using a highly secretive, quality manufacturing process.

New: Musicians behind ‘Game of Thrones’ present Institute masterclass

On Tuesday 20th March, the Institute will welcome pioneering Sheffield electronic band ‘In The Nursery (ITN)’ to lead a live film soundtracking masterclass at the Tricycle Cinema in Kilburn. The masterclass will be followed by a live performance to accompany a screening of the silent classic film ‘Man With A Movie Camera’. This event is presented in conjunction with London’s Tricycle Theatre and Sensoria, the UK's leading festival of music, film and digital.
ITN (twin brothers Nigel & Klive Humberstone), will give an insight into their career as musicians and the development of their Optical Music Series. The duo, whose musical history covers the past 30 years, have constantly expressed their desire for progress and experimentation and they are renowned for their live events and accompanying classic silent films with electronic scores. Their music has featured in Interview with the Vampire, Streetfighter II, The Rainmaker, The Aviator and Gran Torino, and more recently in trailer and ‘making of’ scenes of upcoming HBO series Game of Thrones.
In the late ‘90s the band was commissioned, as part of their Optical Music Series, to provide new scores for the silent classics The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Asphalt, and Man with a Movie Camera. The screening, taken from this series, will see one of the most extraordinary pieces of progressive film-making by director Vertov, accompanied by the distinctive live sounds of ITN’s syncopated and alluring soundtrack. Following the event, students from the Institute will be able to compose their own scores for the same film, to be performed in London.
The masterclass and screening are free to Institute students, but also open to the public. Masterclass tickets are £5 available from the Institute (0207 328 0222), and screening tickets are available from the Tricycle Box office on 020 7328 1000, or online at www.tricycle.co.uk.

Exclusive Live CD

New live album of the benefit festival for Jason Becker. Pledge for the live disc! Proceeds will go to Jason Becker!

On November 13, 2011, a 6-hour guitar festival was held to honor Jason Becker, the incredible guitarist known for his extraordinary work with Cacophony, David Lee Roth and Marty Friedman, among others. Out of deep respect for Jason and love of his work, each guitarist featured at this tribute show waived their usual performance fees, playing that day simply to honor one of their contemporaries and source of great influence: Jason Becker, a modern day guitar great. All notes played that night were dedicated to the great Jason Becker in support of his struggle against the disease ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), which is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.
Contributing artists who played for Jason include: Guthrie Govan, Stuart Hamm (Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Frank Gambale) , Michael Lee Firkins, Mattias Eklundh (Freak Kitchen), Marco Sfogli (James LaBrie Band), Kiko Loureiro (Angra), Daniele Gottardo, Stéphan Forté (Adagio), Andy James, Atma Anur and more…
The live show was recorded on 24 tracks and now the tunes still need to be edited, mixed and mastered in the studio + design of the album needs to be made.
We need your help to finish the production on this live album. With your pledge, you will be helping to ensure that this amazing recording of a legendary concert gets released as well as defraying the cost of Jason’s growing medical expenses (www.jasonbecker.com).
Thank you!

Walter Trout: Blue solo

Stunning guitar solo by Walter Trout, saturated with feel, smooth bass work from Rick Knapp, and a hot drum solo by Michael Leasure, as the band delivered a knockout finale to a delighted audience at the MEZZ venue in Breda, The Netherlands, on Sunday March 4th 2012. Walter's intensive tour through Europe continues, with 12 'back to back' gigs scheduled in Germany and Austria in the coming weeks to end of March 2012.
Extract from Walter's website:
Walter Trout's passionate new 'Blues for the Modern Daze' (Amazon link below) cuts right to the core of his art and his heart. His 21st album returns the contemporary guitar legend to his hard-core blues roots and finds his songwriting at a creative and personal zenith.
Trout's sixth recording for Provogue Records is his first pure blues album in 23 years as a bandleader, which is astounding given his heavy resume in the genre. Trout spent five years in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and was a member of Canned Heat, two of the style's supremely influential bands. He's also supported a slew of classic artists including John Lee Hooker, Big Mama Thornton and Joe Tex. Nonetheless, as a front man the six-string virtuoso developed a conflagrant approach to his instrument and a reputation for tornado-strength live shows that led famed BBC disc jockey Bob Harris to call him "the world's greatest rock guitarist" in his influential book The Whispering Years and won Trout the sixth spot on BBC Radio One's list of the Top 20 guitarists of all time.
"I'm reluctant to be called a political songwriter or a protest singer, but things have gotten so far out of hand that it would be irresponsible to ignore them," Trout says. "These are simply the way I feel about things like our society's failure to take care of people and the way the teachings of Jesus are twisted to defend bigotry and ignorance. The cruelty in the
Trout's practical schooling in blues started when he arrived in Los Angeles in 1973 and got gigs behind Hooker, Big Mama Thornton, Finis Tasby, Pee Wee Crayton, Lowell Fulsom, Percy Mayfield and Joe Tex. In 1981 he joined the remaining original members of Canned Heat. But the real turning point was his tenure with British blues giant John Mayall. Trout became part of the Bluesbreakers' lineage of great guitarists along with Eric Clapton, Peter Green and Mick Taylor. Beginning in 1984 he shared six-string duties with Coco Montoya in Mayall's band, creating a flexible guitar dynamic that helped provide the Bluesbreakers a renaissance that returned the group to the apex of the international blues touring circuit.
Featuring:
Walter Trout: guitar, vocals
Rick Knapp: bass
Michael Leasure: drums
Sammy Avila: Keyboards
