The Weekly Riff - Nicole from MERIDIEM - "Katabases" | GEAR GODS
The current members of MeridieM were the instrumental backbone of the now defunct alt-prog rock group Eye Ra Haze. Building a strong musical bond and camaraderie though songwriting, guitarist Nicole Papastavrou, pianist Karine Catenacci, drummer Kevin Corcoran and bassist Chris Marrone formed MeridieM. The quartet were organically able to move forward in the creative process, further exploring the depth and voice of each instrument, while collectively expanding their musical horizons. This freedom gave MeridieM the free-range power to further explore the reach of their personal abilities and produce a musical outcome that is distinctly progressive, while simultaneously melodic and undeniably heavy.
MeridieM's debut EP Odysseia nods to jazz composition, foregoing traditional structures while tying each segment back beautifully to plush piano arrangements coupled with crushing riffs. The EP boasts a mix that highlights each nuance of this instrumental intertwining and aims to bring listeners along for the musical voyage. Live piano is ferociously coupled with standout bass, succinct distorted guitars and a perfectly aligned rhythm section. Percussive experimentation is paramount in this release, with a fierce focus on craftily weaving varied rhythms into deep grooves.MeridieM launch you into an audio journey of gorgeously juxtaposed sounds that are spread through a variety of mediums. The first single off of the EP, "Supernova," takes listeners on a musical trail of growth and exploration. Sonically it is a natural progression for the musical unit both brutally commanding and lush, with an exploratory nod to that idyllic "space in-between."
In writing the Odysseia EP, the band took time to remotely cultivate their contributions though the convenience of technology. Spread across several different areas, they took advantage of their ability to interpret each layer independently via Dropbox and ProTools. This unique collaborative effort spawned a sound that is indigenous to the group and individually flattering to their personal growth. Every song on the EP represents a deep mix of emotions, offering listeners a front-seat view of their journey. In 2015 MeridieM are poised to further expand and evolve musically - sit back, open your mind and enjoy the process." -Zeena Koda

Jane Getter: Premonition ON CD Preorder featuring Bryan Beller, Chad Wackerman, Alex Skolnick and Adam Holzman
Progressive supergroup, Jane Getter Premonition, has teamed up with PopMatters.com to launch a new track, “Surprised,” taken from the band’s Madfish debut, On, out October 2. Stream album
opener, “Surprised,” online at:
“‘Surprised’ is based on the opening picking riff,” Getter told PopMatters. “I came up with it one day when I was practicing and the song took off from there. Being a long-time fan of Living Colour, it was a real treat to have Corey Glover sing on this song (and the album!). His voice is the perfect combination of rock, R&B and gospel, and he brings the intensity and soulfulness to the song that I was hoping for.
“The lyrics came from my frustration and astonishment at how toxic the political arena is right now. I continue to be ‘surprised’ and amazed at how hypocritical and self-serving some politicians are.”
ON is the Jane Getter Premonition's debut for the Madfish label.
Recorded at Avatar Studios in New York, the album features a stellar line-up of Progressive, Jazz and Rock musicians including Adam Holzman (Miles Davis, Steven Wilson), Bryan Beller (Joe Satriiani, The Aristocrats), Chad Wackerman (Frank Zappa, Allan Holdsworth), Corey Glover (Living Colour), Alex Skolnick (Testament, Savatage, Ozzy Osbourne) and Theo Travis (Steven Wilson, Robert Fripp).
Mixing duties were handled by Adam Holzman at Spin Studios in Long island City, NYC.

Eric Barnett, Matthew Charles Heulitt, Nili Brosh: Points North, Moetar, Bricks and the Nili Brosh band Bricks and Mortar tour date

Points North is the self-titled second album by this primarily instrumental rock band. Spearheaded by guitarist Eric Barnett (Guitar Player magazine's Guitar Superstar finalist), bassist Uriah Duffy (Whitesnake) and drummer Kevin Aiello, Points North stands on the shoulders of iconic artists Rush, Cream, The Police and Dixie Dregs, expanding upon these influences and clearly cutting its own artistic path.
Their new album has Points North introducing vocals for the first time (on Colorblind) but their primary musical focus remains the same. Points North is a leading light of modern instrumental guitar music, bringing attention to the genre through their technical prowess, superior musicality and compositional skills.
MoeTar’s two main protagonists, lead singer Moorea Dickason and bassist/songwriter/lyricist Tarik Ragab, along with a versatile crew of musicians, including guitarist Matthew Charles Heulitt (Zigaboo Modeliste, Narada Michael Walden), drummer David Flores, keyboardist/bassist Jonathan Herrera (Oz Noy, Garaj Mahal, Miguel Migs), and keyboardist Matt Lebofsky (miRthkon, Secret Chiefs 3) create catchy, yet complex, music that attempts to make sense of our confusing world.
On paper the music shouldn’t work at all. The band flies in the face of logic, yet not a musical note seems out of place. Flaunting their musical fluency, MoeTar doesn’t avoid challenges: they appear to actively court and thrive on them. Indeed. Inherent contradictions are the subject of many of the band’s songs.
“So much of what I write about involves paradoxes,” says Ragab. “It seems the rules are set in contradiction to one another.”
Half the fun of listening to MoeTar is hearing how well all of these seemingly incompatible musical pieces fit together. Amid sonic references to Zappa, The Beatles, XTC, Gentle Giant, Stevie Wonder, Laurie Anderson and many others, MoeTar offers a fresh approach to rock, pop, electronica and experimental music. Simply put, From These Small Seeds is the culmination of a collision of styles that seems to defy the odds – and our ears.
Nili Brosh was born and raised in Rishon LeZion, Israel. She was always inspired by her older brother Ethan‘s passion for music and the guitar. She moved to Boston with her family at the age of 12, where she began studying electric guitar and eventually went on to study at Berklee College of Music.
At Berklee, Nili studied and performed with the school’s premier guitar teachers, such as Don Lappin, Jon Finn, Joe Stump, and Scott Tarulli. Along with classmates Masashi Ushijima (drums), Josh Kwolek (bass), and Sabi Saltiel (guitar), she formed the Nili Brosh Band, which frequently performed original material around the New England area. Nili graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2009 with a B.M in Professional Music, and she also became one of the youngest faculty members in the Berklee summer guitar programs, where she has been teaching since the age of 19.
Now 23 years old, Nili has performed with Stu Hamm (Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson), Guthrie Govan (Asia), Andy Timmons (Danger Danger, Olivia Newton-John), The Iron Maidens (world’s only all-female tribute to Iron Maiden), The Aristocrats, and has opened for artists such as Terry Ilous (XYZ), Joey Molland (Badfinger), and Pat Travers.

David Gilmour is universally regarded as one of the finest guitarists to ever play a Stratocaster. His powerfully emotive voice on the instrument propelled him early on into the upper reaches of rock guitar reverence through his playing with Pink Floyd, in which he crafted some of the most famous guitar solos ever etched into black vinyl—think “Time” from 1973’s epic The Dark Side of the Moon, or his soaring and apocalyptic solos in “Comfortably Numb” from 1979’s The Wall.
Through guest appearances over the years onstage and in the studio with artists such as Paul McCartney, Kate Bush and Pete Townshend, and through his continuing successful solo career, Gilmour remains one of the world’s most respected and influential guitarists, and anyone’s list of the top Stratocaster players of all time invariably contains his name at or very close to the top.
Gilmour’s latest album, Rattle That Lock, marks yet another visionary milestone in his storied career. Produced by Gilmour and Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera, the album features three instrumental tracks plus seven other tracks with lyrics penned either by Gilmour or novelist Polly Samson.

Unnatural Selection, will be joining metal icons SOULFLY on their upcoming North American tour. HAVOK vocalist/guitarist David Sanchez comments on Mike's departure,"Mike is an amazing musician and rock-solid performer! I would like to thank him for lending his talent to the band for two years. I will always love the music he writes and appreciate his abilities."
The newly indoctrinated Schendzielos will record bass on HAVOK's upcoming fourth studio album and take part in the band's upcoming North American headlining tour. The bassist said this about joining the band, "I'm incredibly excited to be working with Havok. Been friends with the dudes forever, always have a blast with 'em, and now I get to thrash with 'em! I have big shoes to fill...Mike is a really, really solid player, but I think my playing style will mix in really well and fans will dig it. The new music is by far the coolest Havok I've ever heard. Can't wait to release it!"
"Nick's skills are documented, go check it out yourselves. He's a guy that's well respected amongst our peers and loved by his friends and band mates. It was an obvious choice to get him for the record and upcoming tour," said lead guitarist Reece Scruggs of his new bandmate.
With work on the new album, their first on Century Media Records, nearing completion, HAVOK is gearing up for a massive North American headlining tour. The month long trek will see HAVOK performing material off the as-of-yet-untitled album so fans will get an early preview of what promises to be the band's most intense effort to date. HAVOK will be joined by a rotating lineup of support acts, which include BLACK BREATH, WITCHAVEN, PSYCHOSOMATIC, BLACK FAST and EXTINCTION A.D. David Sanchez comments, "This tour is full of neck-wreckers and we're proud to have such heavy bands sharing the road with us. Every band on this tour absolutely kills live. For fans of real metal, this tour is not to be missed."
HAVOK's Century Media debut is scheduled for an early 2016 release. For more HAVOK visit www.facebook.com/HavokOfficial
