Shane Theriot: dirty power new cd

Shane Theriot - Dirty Power:
Shane Theriot returns with another groove heavy collection of 10 original tunes dripping with New Orleans injected-funk and burning guitar - it's called Dirty Power. Joined by a cast of legendary drummers including Zigaboo Modeliste (The Meters), Jim Keltner, Richie Hayward (Little Feat) and New Orleans icon Johnny Vidacovich, Shane masterfully rips over these grooves while still allowing the funky backbeats to take the front seat. Also featuring slide master Sonny Landreth, and Mark Braud (Preservation Hall Band), Roderick Paulin (Maceo Parker) and Kirk Joseph (Dirty Dozen Brass Band) on horns. Bass virtuoso Adam Nitti and studio ace Hutch Hutchinson (Bonnie Raitt, Brian Wilson) hold down the low end. Johnny Neel (Allman Bros., Govt Mule) shares the keyboard duties along with David Torkanowsky. Shane has performed and/or recorded with many artists including The Neville Brothers, Jewel, LeAnn Rimes, Boz Scaggs, Madeleine Peyroux and The Syn (featuring Chris Squire and Alan White from Yes).

Matias Kupiainen: carlbegai interviews stratovarius singer

A good interview from
Tolkki’s absence isn’t as noticeable as one might expect. There are some tentative moments on Polaris, certainly, but Kupiainen has filled whatever perceived void there should have been. At the very least he’s made making music in Stratovarius fun again.

“I met him once two years ago, but he was originally introducer and a producer and engineer,” Kotipelto says of tracking Kupiainen down. “I had no idea that he was such a good guitar player, but of course there are always good guitarists around (laughs). A year ago Lauri did a TV gig at the Tavastia club in Helsinki for this album called Guitar Heroes, and the next day he called me and told me he met the best live guitar player he’d ever heard. He told me it was Matias Kupiainen, so I found him on YouTube and I was completely blown away. Lauri suggested him to Jens as well, who was very impressed. Jens told me Matias reminded him of the first time he’d heard Yngwie’s playing. He really has that special gift. So, I went to meet him about some other stuff, and after about 30 minutes I told Matias that it wasn’t the real reason I came down (laughs). I asked him if he’d be interested in joining the band and his answer was, ‘Uh…okay.’ We didn’t think about holding auditions or anything, it just felt right asking him.”

“When I visited him in his studio I saw that he had the Visions and Episode albums,” Kotipelto continues, “so he knew some Stratovarius stuff, but he’s more into progressive and heavier stuff. He’s also a power metal guy, so it’s a good combination. Matias can play different styles of metal, which is a great thing. He actually brought in the first single ‘Deep Unknown’, and he helped me with my songs by arranging them and composing the solo parts. It’s been very easy working with him. And what’s a big plus for me was, he produced my vocals for the album. Timo used to do all that, so it was nice to find out that Matias is a really good producer as well. He knows when to

Vinnie Moore: house of rock interview

Vinnie Moore is interviewed by the House of Rock blog. Vinnie Moore:
First of all, I don't know where the 35 number came from. I think that's a bit of an exaggeration from somebody, I'm not sure. Maybe we had more like 20 songs, I would guess. Basically you put them all together, and there are certain ones that right away are so strong that you know they're going to be on the record. "Saving Me" was one of those. "Rock Ready" was another one. From the moment I sent those to Phil and he heard them he just responded so positively from the get go. It was just obvious that they were going to be on the record.

Then there are a lot of other songs, and you have to leave something out, and decide which ones to go with. It's a matter sometimes of just getting together and playing, seeing how it vibes when you all play together and jam on the song. The other thing is Phil's voice a lot of times has a lot to do with it. Perhaps what key the song's in, and what range he can sing it in. So that has a lot to do with it as well. Then you just have to go for it all based on feel. Sometimes also it's a matter where we have two or three in this style, so we need to pick another style. You need to be a bit eclectic in terms of mixing it up by having different tempos and feel.

Timo Tolkki: stratovarius micturition on my none textural matter

From Blabbermouth!
Timmo Tolkki has slammed the band's current lineup for "exploiting" the STRATOVARIUS name and "pissing on my music and art."

STRATOVARIUS' present formation includes four members from the most recent version of the Tolkki-led lineup — Timo Kotipelto (vocals), Jens Johansson (keyboards), Jörg Michael (drums) and Lauri Porra (bass) — along with new guitarist Matias Kupiainen.

"Polaris", the new album from STRATOVARIUS, entered the official chart in Finland at position No. 2. The CD also debuted on the German Media Control chart at No. 55.

In a June 14, 2009 online posting, Tolkki stated about his former bandmates, "These guys keep on both exploiting the name and pissing on my music and art. More than personal choice it comes down to morals that STRATOVARIUS was completely my vision. Both musically and ideologically. As there cannot be STRATOVARIUS without Kotipelto, Jörg Michael or Jens Johansson, there surely cannot be STRATOVARIUS without me. They are not even leaving in peace some of the most deepest feelings I have composed like 'Forever', which I composed to my dead father. I am not convinced about the 'sincerity' that 'more music is better.' It is the money talking here. Plus that everything is dumped to my neck blatantly ignoring that I shared every single euro with these guys while I was in the band. We are talking about lot of money here. I take my music and art very seriously and I don't make compromises. I don't take my music to 'choir wars' and prostitute myself with cheap acts like that. And I take my responsibility when I have done something wrong, like in the stunt." [Referring to the purported "publicity stunt" STRATOVARIUS concoted several years ago when singer Timo Kotipelto was fired and a female replacement, Miss K, was drafted in, as well as the stabbing that took place in Madrid, Spain. According to Timo, the whole publicity stunt was organized very meticulously and the entire band, management and even the record company was in on it.] "I don't hide. What there guys are doing in this moment by calling their band 'STRATOVARIUS' is disgusting. Truly disgusting."
