Marco Sfogli: Mullmuzzler North American solo tour

James LaBrie will embark on a North American solo tour this winter. LaBrie wll perform material from his side project MULLMUZZLER as well as his two solo albums, 2005's "Elements Of Persuasion" and his newest CD, "Static Impulse", which was released last week via InsideOut Music.

Commented LaBrie: "[Keyboardist] Matt [Guillory], [guitarist] Marco [Sfogli], [drummer/vocalist] Peter [Wildoer], [bassist] Ray [Riendeau] and I are extremely psyched to announce a tour in support of the new album, 'Static Impulse'. Everyone that played on the disc will be on stage. This is going to be a very powerful and memorable evening. Just us and the fans doing what we both love doing. You will hear songs from MULLMUZZLER, 'Elements Of Persuasion' and, of course, the latest, 'Static Impulse'. Come out and support this U.S./Canada tour and let's have a blast. Ron Jarzombek: Prog-Sphere posts an extensive interview has posted an extensive interview with acclaimed guitarist Ron Jarzombek (WATCHTOWER, BLOTTED SCIENCE, SPASTIC INK). In it, Jarzombek talks about everything from his early days with S.A. SLAYER, also featuring current MACHINE HEAD drummer Dave McClain, to his feelings on jazz music, and the upcoming BLOTTED SCIENCE EP which will be the group's first recording with new drummer Hannes Grossmann (OBSCURA, ex-NECROPHAGIST).

On S.A. SLAYER: "We used to play around Texas with WatchTower and Helstar quite a bit. It was more of a straight ahead metal kind of thing. I wore black spandex and a leather vest (which was actually made out of vinyl - LOL) and I always felt a bit out of place, but went along with it because it was a cool gig. The other guys in the band were listening to Motorhead and Iron Maiden while I was into Rush. It all was working pretty well until Don (Van Stavern) and Dave (McClain) decided that they wanted to form a band with Mark Reale from Riot, which fell apart almost as soon as it started. S.A. Slayer was then over and I was I in WatchTower shortly after, which was just fine with me, although I had a bitch of a time trying to fill Billy (White)’s shoes."

On jazz: "Sometimes my music is described as jazz, which I do not hear at all. I’m not a fan of jazz and actually whenever I try to work with heavily influenced jazz guys, I have problems. If a musician isn’t grounded in rock or metal and they have a bunch of jazz wanker guys listed as their influences, a bright red flag goes up for me. Don’t get me wrong, I totally respect and admire players like Larry Carlton, Allan Holdsworth, Al DiMeola, Frank Gambale, etc. but I don’t want to write/play with drummers and bass players who don’t have clue what they are supposed to be playing in a rock/metal context. Figure out all your widdling going-nowhere-crap on your own time, then when you figure out what you’re going to play, THEN hit the record button."

On BLOTTED SCIENCE: "We incorporated the 'Circle Of 12 Tones' writing system that Alex and I we are still using, and actually have a pretty interesting thing going. On the upcoming EP we have a VERY cool concept of what we are writing music to, and to be quite honest I don’t think any band has done it before. I’ve dabbled in it before with Spastic Ink, but this is EXTREME! and I’m sure this will knock people’s socks off. It’s a little too involved to do a whole album, so we’re going to see how all goes with this EP."

Jack Gardiner: Shred Knowledge interview

You recently went to Tom Quayle and Rick Grahams masterclass , it looked awsome , tell sk about the experience ?

Man, the masterclass was unbelievably good. Tom and Rick are the best of the best, when it comes to both playing and teaching.
Not to mention they're such nice guys. The content covered was huge, from Limitation exercises right the way through to advanced approaches to improvisation. Everyone really enjoyed the whole experience, and it's great to come back with a disc full of backing tracks and all the things covered in the masterclass.
I've got a practice routine that i really need to complete... although it might take me 12 million years due to the amount of things they covered.

I'd certainly suggest it to anyone who's been thinking about going. I'm sure they'll be holding another one next year. It's a great oppurtunity to meet other players, learn off two of the best players about, and have a generally great time. more

Eric Clapton: win the Clapton Deluxe Limited Edition

Win an Eric Clapton Stratocaster® guitar & the sold-out Clapton Deluxe Limited Edition Bundle.

Guitar icon and three-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Eric Clapton is set to release his 19th solo studio album, Clapton, on Sept. 28.

Clapton created a collection that touches on everything from century-old traditional brass bands to little-known country blues to brand-new originals. The result is both relaxed and revelatory, and unlike anything the guitarist has done in his legendary career.

"This album wasn't what it was intended to be at all," he says. "It's actually better than it was meant to be because, in a way, I just let it happen. It's an eclectic collection of songs that weren't really on the map — and I like it so much because if it's a surprise to the fans, that's only because it's a surprise to me, as well."

To celebrate this release, Fender has another surprise in store for Clapton fans — a chance to win his signature Fender Stratocaster model and the sold-out Clapton Deluxe Limited Edition Bundle, which includes an exclusive bonus track, "You Better Watch Yourself," all on a collectible 24-karat-gold CD.

Michael Romeo: Symphony X recording new CD

North America's progressive metal masters SYMPHONY X are currently recording their Nuclear Blast debut and follow-up to 2007's "Paradise Lost", which has sold over 60,000 copies in North America. Lead vocalist Russell Allen has finished laying down his vocal tracks and the band is moving on to record keyboards, bass, and guitar solos.

Comments Allen: "I just want to say how excited I am about the new album. It's gonna kill! The songs rock and the performances by my fellow bandmates are simply amazing." Guitarist Michael Romeo adds: "We love the fans, and we know we haven't been as on top of things with the updates this year as we should have, but when it's down to the wire and we're going 24/7 trying to wrap things up, then that's what we're focused on.

"We really think the fans will like this album; it has been, by far, more work (and harder work) than any other album, period." more
