Levi Clay: master transcriber and player interviewed over at Shred Knowledge

Levi Clay
Obviously Levi Clay shows great taste [read on :)]... seriously though Levi is on helluva transcriber and has transcribed some of the more difficult players like Daniele Gottardo, Guthrie Govan etc. . Check out his recent interview on Shred Knowledge, which is chock full of players that Levi has worked with. The videos are on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/user/MissMisstreater This is one he's done covering Guthrie Govan licks

Guthrie Govan - Uncle Skunk Lesson - Levi Clay

Read the interview:
LEVI .Well its obviously the fusion thing, thanks to Laurie Monk fusion is extremely popular again and that makes me very happy!
So people usually want me to pass on some of the things I've learned on advanced soloing concepts etc.
I used to be a techniques teacher and player, but now I'm more interested in the notes I'm playing, not how I'm playing them; I cant spend 5 hours a day keeping my alternate picking chops in shape because I would rather improve my visualization skills so I can play melodies over changes.

What artist have you had to transcribe the most ?

LEVI .Well to get where I am I have transcribed alot of Brett Garsed (Like A LOT!) plus plenty of Guthrie, Howe, Kotzen, Quayle, Henderson, Baxter etc etc.
To be honest, the best things to transcribe are things that aren't guitar. I defy anyone to listen to Michael Brecker and not say "I need to learn that lick!" full interview

Keith Whalen: looking for stimuli outside of guitars

Although I haven't denuded the Holy Grail of guitar lickery, I did stumble across a beautiful slew of arpeggio ideas while digesting Felix Blumenfeld's piano Etude Op. 3 No. 1. In all sincerity, I can only attribute the first example to the etude, but with the beauty of the work resounding in my head I went on a hunt for new sounds. At new costs, too.

One thing of significant importance is to look for stimuli outside of guitars, guitar playing and guitar players. Or, at times, even outside of music! How will I tackle the arpeggio formations of Paganini or Wieniawski? Is Blumenfeld, Henselt or Alkan playable on our instrument and how? How can I duplicate piano, violin or vocal ornamentation? All of these questions are valid and will arise as you broaden your musical intake, especially if you attempt to translate the language onto the guitar. more
