Jeff Kollman: Chad Smith's Bombastic Meatbats Detroit 2011

April 21, 2011--Chad Smith's fusion/funk rock project, Bombastic Meatbeats.
Great 2-hour set from the band at the "Ritz" in Warren, Michigan. Jeff Kollman kills on guitar. Technical trouble here in the opener "Passing the Ace". Jeff quips about some "Toby Redd guitar action. (Chad's old band mates from 80's Detroit band Toby Redd played a couple tunes to open). Fun night.

Fredrik Pihl: guitar international interview

Fredrik Pihl: There are many great players out there for sure! I try not to compare myself with anyone, and just do what I love, which is to play guitar and make music. With my new album, it was my intention to make music that wasn’t just shredding or guitar oriented, like the music that I made in the past. I tried to focus on songwriting and arranging instead. Of course there is some fancy guitar stuff happening in the songs, but I wouldn’t define the music as pure shredding.

So I’m not really sure whether I fit in with the top names or not. That’s up to the listeners to decide. As for myself, I wouldn’t dare compare myself to some of the great players. I just want to make music and push my limits as much as possible, which I really did when I recorded this album.

Matt: Who were some of your major influences growing up?

Fredrik Pihl: When I was twelve years old, me and some friends were watching a live concert with Guns N’ Roses on TV. We all played air guitar, and we wanted to look as cool as Slash. I guess that’s when it started. Slash was a huge influence as well as James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett of Metallica. Later I discovered players such as Marty Friedman, Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai and Joe Satriani. I was also a huge Iron Maiden fan. Since then my list of influences has expanded a lot, but I still like many of the guitar players I grew up listening to as well. more

Ivan Mihaljevic: metal shock interview

What does it mean to you to play the guitar? What feelings it provoces in you and what kind of message you want to transfer to your audience?

Well, guitar is just a tool for me. It’s all about making music. Guitar and voice are my tools which enable me to express my ideas. Making and playing music is really a wonderful feeling. The message that I’d like to transfer the most is probably to work on your talents, seize your potential and use it in a constructive manner. Human characteristics that I dislike the most are all forms of destructive behavior.

How would you describe your musical genre?

Well, I believe my style is quite diverse and that it spans between a variety of genres. A single genre that would probably describe it the best would probably be progressive rock since progressive rock basically already incorporates characteristics from many different genres. more

Marty Friedman : Last night in Belgium was good fun! A Belgian guy who bought one of my Jacksons from the Auction for Japan brought it to the venue to have it signed, so I said "how about if I play it in the show tonight?" and so I played the first 3 songs with it. Nice axe...Merci beaucoup, mon ami!
