The Real School Of Music is proud to present: A very special "Hard Rock & Heavy Metal Masterclass Guitar Clinic" with Dave Reffett!!!
Dave Reffett exploded onto the Hard Rock and Heavy Metal scene in 2010 with his critically acclaimed album “The Call Of The Flames”. Dave played lead guitar, sang vocals, played bass, and wrote the entire album. He played almost every note on the CD except for contributions from some of his friends who appeared on the album including rock legends like George Lynch (Dokken, Lynch Mob), Mike Mangini, Michael Angelo Batio, Chris Poland (Megadeth), Glen Drover (Megadeth, Testament) and more!

Dave also produced the album alongside acclaimed mixing engineer Mudrock (Alice Cooper, Godsmack, Avenged Sevenfold) and mastering legend George Marino (Metallica, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Dio, Kiss).
Dave’s work has earned him both national and international attention from the likes of Guitar World Magazine, NPR, the BBC, Gitar Plus Magazine (Asia), Metal Assault, Talking Metal, Bravewords, Blabbermouth and many many other outlets.

A lot of people in the music business have taken notice of Dave’s incredible artistry; such as Bruce Dickinson the lead singer from Iron Maiden who called Dave’s CD “A must have album” on his BBC radio show and hailed Dave's guitar playing as "Fantastic". Hard Rocker Magazine in Europe gave the CD a near perfect 9.5 out of 10 score.
Dave also has a degree in Music Business Management from the prestigious Berklee College Of Music and has worked at major record labels like Sanctuary Records and Virgin Records/EMI Music. While there he helped market and promote artists like The Rolling Stones, Meat Loaf, Janet Jackson, Korn, and many others.

Dave has taught, mentored, and inspired many musicians over the years to reach for their highest potential. He is really excited to bring his wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm to The Real School Of Music.

Your bio tells a great story of being in the right places with the right people , hows it going with shredguy ? is this another good stroke of luck ?

I actually was turned onto ShredGuy by 2 people, first awareness was through Rusty Cooley, 2nd with a fellow shredder by the name of  Pete Pachio in 08' of whom we did a re-make of my demo song Flight of the blue phoenix (a demo song to Mike Varney Shrapnel records back in the early 90's) , Mike McDowell was kind enough to add us to the Shredding Across The World Vol. 2 release.  He then added me on the roster of Vol. 3 with G-THEORY, which I redifinedin the release of INNERPLANETARIUM with of course a full band.
What do shredguy do for you as alot of guys just do their own thing and deals with record companies are quite rare arent they ?
ShredGuy has done alot in the way of getting contacts and full page adds in guitar world, guitar legends, fuzz, guitar plus, fire works and more to come. He has really taken more of a noticeable individual focus on the artist as well as been out to spread the focus on the label as well.not to mention he has a line of shirts that kick ass! more

STRING INSANITY 2011 - Guitar Competition

News: Rotosound add Swing Bass range

Rotosound have just added 45-100 gauge nickel strings to the Swing Bass range, their popular round wound bass string range.

Round wound strings were developed by Rotosound at the behest of the Who’s John Entwhistle, who was looking for a brighter, more piano like bass tone to complement his trebly and fleet fingered lead bass style. Introduced in 1962, with widespread usage since the 1970’s, they changed the bass sound instantly, and have led the pack ever since.

Bass players insist on resilient, versatile and consistent strings, which give them the sound they want. The Swing Bass range offers 4 to 8 string sets in a wide range of gauges, made from either stainless steel or nickel, with a choice of double ball ends or not and even non standard lengths. All have the red silk ends making them instantly recognisable as Rotosound.

The new 45-100 gauge nickel strings ( Product Code RS66LN ) are manufactured to the same high specification as the Swing Bass Stainless Steel sets, but are much, much smoother to play. The slightly muted, smoother tone, with the vintage vibe of the nickel plate makes them a good alternative to the punchier sounding stainless steel. These strings are kinder to your fingers with their softer feel and give a warmer sound which develops the more you play them.

Árni Hjörvar the bass player of The Vaccines uses the RS66LN 45-100 Swing Bass Nickel strings to get his distinctive sound. The Vaccines were recently placed third in the BBC’s Sound of 2011 poll, and have been nominated for MTV’s ‘Best New Band of 2011’ award. BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe declared their demo single ‘If You Wanna’ released summer 2010 the ‘Hottest Record in the World’ and their first single ‘Wreckin’ Bar (Ra Ra RA)’ was Q Magazine’s ‘Track Of The Day’, following its release in November 2010.

All Rotosound strings are produced using a highly secretive, quality manufacturing process. Many are still made today the same as they were back in the 1960’s helping them retain their unique tone and sound, and Rotosound are passionate about keeping it that way. To find out more visit

Carl Verheyen: Pear/Carl Veryehen/Jimmy Johnson:extemp'ore

Pear/Carl Veryehen/Jimmy Johnson:extemp'ore

Carl Verheyan (guitar); Jimmy Johnson (electric bass); Jennifer Leitham (upright bass); Prince Diabate' (kora); Annie Wadhams; Cindy Wonderful (voice)

On the opening strains of "Dewey Miles," the mysterious lead-off track from Pear's extemp'ore, the voice of Miles Davis intones (in that oft-imitated gruff demeanor): "Don't play what you know, play what you hear." Later in that groove-heavy piece, Miles declares: "I don't want to be labeled anything. I'm a musician." Those two mantras serve as sage-like guidance for the duo of pianist Nick Pierone and percussionist Rick Milne (the core of Pear) on their auspicious debut. Given license to paint vivid colors on a blank canvas, this could be a soundtrack to a Jean-Michel Basquiat painting. Pear dives headlong into a pool of provocative sound where the freedom principle prevails and the results are wide-ranging and genre-defying. Drawing on a wealth of musical influences, the audacious duo has concocted a striking pastiche where Miles and Cecil Taylor sit comfortably beside Brian Eno, Digable Planets, Medeski, Martin & Wood, the Bad Plus and Jaco Pastorius, with touches of minimalism, lyricism and spoken word experimentalism thrown into the subversive mix.

A celebration of spontaneity, Pear's extemp'ore is a vibrant example of the alchemy of improvisation, where creating in the moment results in a vitality that no amount of forethought could conjure. Special guests on Pear's maiden voyage include upright bassist Jennifer Leitham, whose humungous, woody tones ground "Dewey Miles," the spikey piano-bass duet "Jenn 2, Sect 1" and the aggressively uptempo "Fast Jenn." Guitarist Carl Verheyan unleashes his signature six-string prowess on "Carl Session 2" while electric bassist Jimmy Johnson (longtime collaborator with guitar god Allan Holdsworth and sideman to James Taylor) turns in some uncommonly lyrical fretless work on the evocative "Tribute to Lorraine" (a dedication to Milne's late mother). Guinean kora master Prince Diabate and rapper Cindy Wonderful (from the electro-punk-dance group Scream Club) also appear on this vibrant production by Pear. "We're old friends and have played together in a lot of different musical groups and genres," says Milne of his creative cohort Pierone. "But we've always shared a love of energized improvisational music. So we made a decision to commit to a series of intense, no-holds-barred free jazz recording sessions."

The baker's dozen of tracks that comprise extemp'ore were culled from those freewheeling jams. Using those sessions as raw materials, the two proceeded to craft music as if with one mind, following each other's inventive twists and turns with an intuitive simpatico. It's a similar method used by Miles Davis and Teo Macero on Bitches Brew and Jack Johnson or Brian Eno and David Byrne on My Life in the Bush of Ghosts. That adventurous approach results in the broad palette of sounds and styles heard on extemp'ore, Pear's mash-up manifesto.

(Liner Notes) Improvisational jazz is a high wire act, creating spontaneous composition out of one-take musical conversations. The group Pear, has perfect balance. One foot is firmly planted in the outer worlds of jazz, on songs like "jenn 2 sect.1" and "jimmy 1a." The other touches the modern landscape; with added vocal treatments on songs like "the frenchman" and "black socks" or a loop of percussion on "carl session 2." When you hear music for the first time, you're not sure what to expect. When Pear plays, neither do they....
