I'm learning to improvise on the works of F. Chopin. I analyze the voices and create a Real Book-style version, which I then use as a basis for improvisation. When I play through the changes, Chopin becomes my teacher.
I’ve also learned a complete waltz, keeping the original melody. This isn’t a verbatim transcription — the voices were disassembled and rearranged to where, in my opinion, they sound best on the guitar. This way, the result feels closer to the original spirit of the piece.
I learned how to create this kind of transcription from Andy Timmons during a joint workshop at the Paul Gilbert Great Guitar Escape.
