Joel Rivard: Shawn Lane's Super Stretch Pent Run

Shawn already rules, but then you see this? From the live version of Get You Back from MIT, in the instructional video. He plays this amazing stretchy line using major pent (mostly), it sounds amazing and is super technical. It could be called a maj7 lick but I think of this as pent because most of it is a combination of 2 pent positions. I also cover the concept and use other positions as well. It's a great way to enhance your pentatonic lines in general by combining positions. The repeated note you get is common in jazz/fusion sax playing.

Joel Rivard: ready for a new CD

I contacted Joel Rivard, uber player from Liquid Notes records JAM CD, to find out what he's been up to since the JAM release.

Joel Rivard says
I've been doing a lot of jazz gigs over the last 5 years that's about it.
Right now I'm working on a fusion instrumental CD. Not sure yet if it will have real drums or programmed, depends on record labels $$ status.

I've been playing a LOT though, hopefully it will show on new recordings. My chops are out of control but the trick is to somehow make music with it :)

Which sounds really great to me... waiting with anticipation. In the meantime you should grab a copy of the towering JAM release.

Joel Rivard: world keeps spinning

Background:
Joel Rivard is one of the triumvirate of players from the critically acclaimed JAM CD on Liquid Note Records along side Alessandro Benvenuti and Milan Polak. He is a multifaceted player. Like many on truthinshredding, he attended Berklee College of Music. He is currently a guitar instructor and has his own jazz band.

He was featured in Guitar Player Magazine's Spotlight Column:
"Proficient at neo-classical sweep runs, chord-melody jazz, chicken-pickin' country, and modern blues lead, Joel Rivard is a technically awesome jack-of-all-licks with clear nods to Shawn Lane's linear cascades, Eric Johnson's violiny melodies and flatpicking's fiery fusillades. The Bostonian's playing is certainly impressive, maybe even virtuosic. (Guitar Player, March 1998)"
He was also featured on Mark Varney's Legato records label on the "Guitar On The Edge" series. Joel recorded and released a solo CD in January 2003 with mostly original songs and was selected to appear on the 2004 release Liquid Note Records, JAM CD.
