Jon Gomm, based in Leeds, West Yorkshire in the UK, is an acoustic singer-songwriter with a revolutionary virtuoso guitar style, where he uses one acoustic guitar to create drum sounds, basslines and twisting melodies all at the same time. The emphasis is still on the soulful vocals and songwriting, and his original material is influenced by everything from Robert Johnson to Radiohead.

His live shows combine deeply personal performances and a natural wit, with a once seen, never forgotten two-handed guitar style, both physical and complex, producing sounds people can barely believe are coming from a humble acoustic guitar.

Jon first laid his hands on a guitar at the age of two (actually it was a ukulele - his parents couldn’t find a guitar small enough). He wrote his first song at the age of six, and was soon accompanying his father, a music critic, to gigs in his hometown of Blackpool. Touring musicians would often stay at the Gomm household on the understanding Jon would get a guitar lesson, meaning he had one-to-one instruction from such blues legends as BB King and Jack Bruce of Cream.

Jon and I have known each other for around 15-16 years now but this is actually the first time we've jammed together like this. In actual fact this was literally the second time we'd ever played this tune or anything else together for that matter! Jon is a true innovator on the instrument and a seriously top bloke so I can't recommend highly enough that you check out his music. This song is about I plant a grew in my 10-feet-square backyard in the Leeds inner city. I put the seeds in a tiny tub, but it grew like a Roald Dahl story until it took over the whole yard, then one day the sun shone extra hard and 100 flowers all went "Pop!". It was amazing, so I wrote a song for it.

The Leeds Guitar Night is back for 2011, and Jon Gomm is hosting a fantastic international line up at The Wardrobe in the Quarry Hill Arts Quarter, where you’ll see and hear the acoustic guitar played every way you could imagine and possibly more! Jon's guests this year are modern pioneers of the acoustic guitar, revered by their fellow players around the world.

Firstly the incredible Erik Mongrain from Quebec, who astounded guitar lovers worldwide with his phenomenal composition ‘Airtap’ in which debuted his radical lap tapping technique. His 2009 appearance on Later With Jools Holland further expanded his reputation as a virtuoso who constantly seeks to push the boundaries of his instrument. “His awesome talent is audible and visible for anyone who has encountered his playing.” (Acoustic Magazine) Jon and Erik have been cohorts for some years but this is the first time they will share the same stage.

The second guest is the wonderfully eclectic acoustic virtuoso Giuliano Modarelli whom Jon met at College studying Jazz in Leeds. Originally from Italy, his unique and exceptionally innovative style is a subtle blend of World Folk, Arabic, Flamenco, Latin and Eastern European. Giuliano regularly tours and furthers his knowledge in India where he collaborates with many outstanding South Asian artists such as Bickram Ghosh and Paban Das Baul. "A fusion barometer would have registered Modarelli's originality and his ability to tap into Jazz's innate power of seduction." (The Sunday Express)

And of course: Jon Gomm – Leeds’ own guitar virtuoso, Acoustic Magazine calls him “One of the world’s most successful, gifted and inspirational guitarists”. This concert will also be the Leeds launch for Jon’s new project ‘The Domestic Science Singles Series’. Jon will be releasing a single each month starting in September with the uplifting anthem “Passionflower.” The second single in the series will be released and revealed on the same day as this concert. To celebrate we’re inviting the Leeds Guitar Night audience to an aftershow party at The Wardrobe which will continue til 2am.

English virtuoso acoustic guitarist and singer-songwriter Jon Gomm is to release his much anticipated second album Don't Panic on December 7th 2009.

Don’t Panic is the follow up to debut album Hypertension, released way back in December 2003. Why the long wait?

“I made the first record shortly after I’d put together a solo acoustic set and wanted to start touring: it was just a demo to get gigs. I made it a full length album because back then the gig fee was barely covering my petrol money, and I needed something to sell!”

This plan worked a little too well, and Gomm has been touring hard ever since, taking his unique brand of virtuosic acoustic guitar-playing to prestigious festivals around Europe and a punishing tour schedule centred around the UK and Italy, and a new album has had to wait.

The new CD features stronger songs, exhibiting Jon’s genuine grasp of a wide range of genres from blues to jazz to rock to country, which comes from his lifelong experience as a session musician and musical academic. Throw in some Urdu lyrics and you’re getting the picture – a one man melting pot. The songs range from dark laments, to sweet melodies, to frenzied romps and there’s even elements of the humour for which Jon’s live shows are renowned.

The guitar playing here is perhaps even more technically demanding than the previous CD too:

“Every time I arrange a new guitar part I make sure I can’t play it without practice. I love the technical aspect as much as the creative process of songwriting, although they are very much separate affairs.”

And as with the debut album, there are no overdubs here, although it may sound like it: there is never more than one guitar on every track.

Jon’s fiercely independent approach to the music industry has meant that the CD was home recorded and is released on the label he owns, which will be launching releases by other artists - including a Grammy winner - in 2010

Jon Gomm New CD "Don't Panic" out December 7th 2009
The waiting is nearly over! The new album Don't Panic will be released on Monday December 7th, meaning the recorded versions of songs such as Gloria, Waterfall, Afterglow and Weather Machine will finally be available.

The CD will be available to preorder at the end of October, and downloads will be available from this website plus the usual outlets (iTunes, etc) from Dec 7th. A sneak preview of the album will be unveiled very soon, as will the first peek at the artwork.
