Raphael Fraser: mahoosive blisters make me Cry For You

First time playing intense-y lead guitar for aaaaages: I've been mostly doing lazy fingerstyle style pentatonics. I also haven't played this song in 3 or 4 years.

Hence mistakes.

And I couldn't do a second take, because mahoosive blisters:

Ouch - mahoosive blisters!!

(the result of not playing like this for far too long. My daughter said she liked it though, so I've uploaded it regardless.

Cry for You (JamUp Pro Laney tone)

Raphael Fraser: Doc got it on take 5....

I realised I could use my new camera and tripod to record my videos for youtube, so I gave it a crack tonight, and noodled over Dave Brubeck's "Take 5" for the test.

I haven't picked up the guitar for a bit, so I was getting rather itchy fingers. I decided to noodle about over this backing track for Blue Jean Blues - which ended rather abruptly, taking me by surprise ;-)

Raphael Fraser: blue noize - the doc's got serious blues!

It's like this backing track was made for Raphael Fraser... great blues jamming

Raphael Fraser: hide in the sun

Here's an updated version of my new instrumental called "Hide in the Sun". I had just started writing it when I heard about Ronnie James Dio being hospitalised - and then dying :'( so it's a sort of a tribute to him \m/ (even though musically it's got close to nothing in common with him)

The lead guitar is my Ash Customworks "Zakk" custom: http://www.ashcustomworks.com. I used my AMT Electronics Fatal Tube and in Garageband I used LAConvolver to apply impulse responses of a Marshall JCM2000. The harmony guitars were also the Zakk but using my AMT California Sound, and the clean backing guitars were using my Ash Customworks mostly-custom "Catherine". Oh, and the dirty rhythm guitars were using a JCM-ish patch I created with the standard amp simulation in Garageband.

Raphael Fraser: anti shred competition

Jon from Guitarnoize is running a competition - an anti-shred competition. It's a nice backing track, so I had a noodle over it.

I used my Ash Customworks mostly-custom guitar ( http://www.ashcustomworks.com ) with my AMT Fatal Tube, into my iMac, running Garageband. LAConvolver applied impulse responses of a Marshall JCM2000, and I stuck on a delay in software as well.

I hope you like it. Please rate/subscribe/friend/favourite/comment/ whatever ;-) follow me on Twitter:http://www.twitter.com/tsuken and visit me at http://www.tsuken.co.nz

Yet another ZZ Top cover: I Need You Tonight, from the awesome album Eliminator. This has always been one of my favourite ZZ Top songs, and it's fantastic fun to play over. I hope you enjoy it.

I used my Ash Customworks custom guitar ( http://www.ashcustomworks.com )through my ProCo RAT2, into my iMac, running Garageband. LAConvolver applied impulse responses of a JCM2000, and I stuck a oodles and poodles of delay on the lead track.

I Need You Tonight (ZZ Top)

Raphael Fraser: the doc fires away.

This is a piece I wrote a few years back to be the opener for my set at a meeting of the Guitar Association of New Zealand; I wanted something up-tempo and rocky, but not heavy. I ended up with this lydian thing, which reminded me a bit of Andy Timmons, and to a lesser extent, Joe Satriani - so I was quite happy, really.

I'm not too happy with the solo in this recording, but the rest went down quite well, so I kept it. I hope you like it. 8)

I used my beautiful Ash Customworks custom guitar ( http://www.ashcustomworks.com ), into my old ProCo Rat2, direct into my iMac, running GarageBand, with LAConvolver to apply an impulse response of a Marshall JCM2000.

Super Laid Back Blues Guitar Solo

Raphael Fraser: man I still got the blues....

Here's a blues dat I wrote. It's all ... it's about trains, and love, and bad heartbreak stuff ... kind of* ;-)

Truthfully it's just an excuse to do a lot of playing over a C minor blues :-p

Raphael Fraser: tribute to John Petrucci

I'm always happy to check out this "Kiwi Shrink's" guitar videos... Raphael Fraser says:
Here's one of my favourite John Petrucci solos: from about the 8 min 30 mark in Learning to Live, off their awesome second album "Images and Words". Short but sweet, and I love the sliding triplet bit. I also found it very hard to play, though it's not especially fast.

I hope you enjoy it. 8)
