Tommy Emmanuel: Plays Don Rich's Telecaster 1964
In this episode, the legendary certified guitar player, Tommy Emmanuel plays Don Rich’s 1964 Fender Telecaster in Broken Mirror Silver Sparkle, talks learning Tom Brumley Licks and the influence of the Buckaroos, and shares a beautiful rendition of his song “Song for A Rainy Morning”. Tommy Emmanuel created a life for himself as a one-man band and has become one of Australia's most respected musicians. With light vim and pure talent, he demonstrates his unique playing style, which is notably a development of the Travis picking technique and blending of rhythm and melody.
In his career, he's played on recordings for Air Supply and Men at Work and in his twenties he joined one of Australia's biggest rock acts, Dragon. Now, as a two-time Grammy nominee with a career spanning five decades, he has, for several years, performed over 300 concerts annually. He's worked with Martin Taylor on a jazz-inspired duet album The Colonel and the Governor. His most recent original material is Little By Little (2011).

This song was written in 1977 for Dixie, who is the daughter of a dear friend, Duncan Maguire - the bass player in a band that Tommy worked in. Tommy often used to babysit little Dixie. The song was recorded on The Day Fingerpickers Took Over The World with the great Chet Atkins.
You may notice that neither Tommy is wearing headphones. This is because our sound engineer, Brad, did a clever trick. He set up two speakers equidistant from the microphone and had two versions of the main recording playing out of phase. This makes the playback virtually soundless to the microphone but audible to Tommy.

The acoustic duet album stemmed from a simple idea: find songs that Tommy and Martin love and come up with arrangements that could allow both of them to, as Tommy Emmanuel says, “fly their own our kites,” and have some fun playing together in the process.

Tommy Emmanuel and Martin Taylor are pleased to announce “The Colonel & The Governor UK Tour 2013”. A forthcoming collaborative acoustic album of the same name is scheduled for UK release in February 2013. The 16-date tour, which sees both guitarists playing together and separately, starts March 7 at the Waterside Theatre, Aylesbury. While they are both serious "men of letters" with Tommy Emmanuel being an honorary Kentucky Colonel, a CGP (Certified Guitar Player), an Order of Australia Medalist (AM) and the holder of an honorary masters (MA) and Martin Taylor being an M.B.E. (Member of the British Empire) and holder of two Honourary Doctorates, they honour each other affectionately with these titles. Both acoustic guitarists are leaders of music in their respective countries - Australia and the UK. Call it a British Commonwealth thing.
Known for his complex finger-picking style, Tommy Emmanuel is an Australian guitarist who performs energetic concerts, and is highly regarded for the use of percussive effects on the guitar. In 2008 and 2010, Guitar Player Magazine’s Readers Poll voted him Best Acoustic Guitarist.
