Michael Schenker,Uli Jon Roth,Leslie West: 3 guitar heroes live

Tampa, FL --- Influential Dean Guitars artists Michael Schenker, Uli Jon Roth and Leslie West have announced that they are combining their collective powers and hitting the road together with the monumental '3 GUITAR HEROES' Tour. Manager Bob Ringe was the mastermind behind the union, and there are some very special surprises for this excursion. Following sets by each artist, the evening will climax with a jam of these highly influential artists on stage together, with special guests earmarked to join them in most markets including Dean Guitars CEO, Elliott "Dean" Rubinson who will be the tour bassist for both Schenker and Roth.

Michael Schenker is a German rock legend. He was a founding member of the Scorpions, and the lead guitarist for UFO prior to launching a highly successful solo career. He is a historical figure in the history of metal guitar, with a very successful line of Dean Signature instruments and was honored on November 10, 2010 in London with the Marshall "11" award, a tribute to those who represent rock 'n' excess and livin' on the edge.

Leslie West is focused on the future and the September 20th release of his upcoming album Unusual Suspects (Provogue), featuring an assemblage of superstars in their own right that includes Slash, ZZ Top's Billy F. Gibbons, Black Label Society's Zakk Wylde, Steve Lukather, and Joe Bonamassa, alongside drummer Kenny Aronoff . From the Sixties through today, he has been revered by artists and fans alike. He has been in command of one of the biggest, boldest electric guitar tones known to humankind from the 1969 Woodstock Festival that placed his band Mountain in to historical lore through today. His voice is even more recognizable, and the powerful mix of honey and gravel that falls somewhere between Otis Redding and King Kong, never sounded better than it does on the upcoming album. From The Vagrants, through Mountain, and his stops along the way with West, Bruce, Laing and multiple highpoints in a long solo career, West has simply always brought it and his Dean Leslie West Signature guitars are a focal-point of his legendary sound.

On the plans for this excursion Leslie West shared, "I am honored to be a part of the 3 Guitar Heroes Tour with Uli Roth and Michael Schenker. My manager Bob and I have been discussing a run like this for ages, and when the opportunity came up I hopped on board. That's right - the guy who just had his leg amputated. These guys are monster players and this should be a lot of fun." Michael Schenker offers, "It is very exciting to be part of a tour that has very deeply rooted connections with two guitarists that have been at their best since the start of their careers. When I was around 14 years-old, I saw a guy on stage playing amazing guitar. It was Uli, and he was around my age. Three years later while with the Scorpions, I chose to join UFO and found the best possible replacement in Uli. I knew my brother Rudolf and Klaus were in good hands. When I was 16 years old, Leslie West was one of my favorite guitarists. He had just recorded "Theme for an Imaginary Western" with Mountain, a song featuring one of my all time favorite lead-breaks on it. Looking back, Leslie is the last guitarist I ever copied seeing that from when I was 17 on, I went completely my own way. So, here we are after all these years on stage together, celebrating the phenomenon - Rock Guitar."

The 3 Guitar Heroes Tour is sponsored by DEAN GUITARS and GUITAR PLAYER Magazine, booked by Wayne Forte and Ben Shprits at Entourage Talent, and managed by Bob Ringe of Survival Management.

Sam Coulson: Custom Rock Blues 1

Ready to rock? Sam Coulson is one of the most exciting young players on the scene, and is highly recommended by no less than the mighty Paul Gilbert! He caused quite a stir at this summer's Monkeyfest and we're sure he's destined for a great musical future. Sam previously jammed over a couple of our Jambuster Series tracks and you guys thought they rocked. So we just had to get him back in to our studio to play some more stunning solos over five of his favourite jamtracks. But this time we have created an amazing downloadable package, which contains all five solos in audio and video formats, along with extended jamtracks and full, accurate Tab!
Custom Rock Blues 1 proves exactly what Sam has to offer and we look forward to him coming back in again soon for Series 2!

Atma Anur: interview

Atma has been called “the guitar players drummer”. He has played with tones of great musicians and has recorded with more than a few of Shrapnel Records recording artist.
He is an educator of music at Krakow School of Jazz and Contemporary Music and the Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music.
He has an interesting musical past full of good musical education.
I hope this interview inspires some musicians to seek out education, and remember with knowledge
comes power.
Let me introduce you to a great drummer Mr. Atma Anur

D.R.: Atma, you play pop, rock, jazz, blues, metal, thrash, and play them all well. What fuels your versatility and creativity?

A.A.: Firstly, I must say that I simply love music and I love to play. So I don't see any difference between any particular style, or genre of music. I always want to play well personally, and play something that is beautiful and appropriate for the song and the situation at hand.
Most of the music that I have played is based on the blues (most modern music that is not orchestral), so my approach begins with time/ groove/ feeling. I spent a lot of time listening to many kinds of music, many different drummers, and copying the things I heard and liked. Not so much anymore, but I used to pick a certain drummer and just study him for months at a time... only him! I would work on one song at a time as well, to try to get the various nuances together. I think that helped me a lot as a younger musician. As a professional sideman I find myself having to copy drummers in order to play the gig correctly... but I don’t like it so much anymore, to be honest. more

Robin Hulbert: two necks... eight fingers

Classical style on a twin neck guitar. Written by Robin Hulbert

Robin Hulbert's debut release, Spectre, features ten progressive instrumental tracks which demonstrate his mastery of a wide variety of cutting-edge techniques. Blazing, eight-finger tapping runs played with gut-wrenching bluesy phrasing and deadly precision, technical syncopated riffing, neo-classical melodies, exotic rhythms, creative pieces where he plays two guitar necks at the same time, and the occasional unearthly signature lick to take the listener by surprise. An exhilarating musical experience that displays the original guitar style of this intense new musician.

Ron Jarzombek: The Animation Of Entomology new CD

pre-orders for 'The Animation Of Entomology' EP and shirt can now be placed with at .

Technical extreme metal all-stars BLOTTED SCIENCE, featuring guitarist/mastermind Ron Jarzombek (WATCHTOWER, TERRESTRIAL EXILED, SPASTIC INK), bassist Alex Webster (CANNIBAL CORPSE, HATE ETERNAL), and new arrival, drummerHannes Grossmann (OBSCURA, TERRESTRIAL EXILED), have posted a sample of the song'Omitting Eyes' on and unveiled the artwork for their forthcoming EP, 'The Animation Of Entomology', scheduled for an October 4 release viaJarzombek's EclecticElectric label. The cover art was done by Atlanta, GA-based artist Richard Morley of Morley Arts.

BLOTTED SCIENCE - Omitting Eyes (edit) by EclecticElectric

Described as "a cross between CANNIBAL CORPSE, SPASTIC INK, and a Bugs Bunny cartoon",'The Animation Of Entomology' takes Jarzombek's fascination with animated cartoons and creepy crawlies to a whole new level. Having experimented with writing complex pieces of music to sync up with movie sequences in the past with his previous outfit SPASTIC INK, the concept has now been applied to BLOTTED SCIENCE over the course of seven songs and a total of 24 minutes of music.

Says Jarzombek: "We wanted to follow up ‘The Machinations of Dementia’ along some of the same lines of science and gore, and came up with a killer concept and some great material with yet another 12-tone writing system. I totally busted my ass syncing things up, carefully orchestrated music to film, bug movies actually, and nit-picked notes to death on this material until my fingers bled and my brain nearly exploded. How everything falls into place I think is beyond incredible! Whether this is the heaviest or most technical thing I've ever done, I don't really know or care, but no other band/project is pulling off what we are doing with this EP."

04. A Sting Operation - I. Human Barbequed

06. A Sting Operation - III. Seeing Dead People
07. A Sting Operation - IV. Omitting Eyes

The folllow-up to the band's highly acclaimed 2007 'The Machinations Of Dementia' full-length album was produced and mixed by Ron Jarzombekand recorded in San Antonio, TX, Tampa, FL, and V. Santura's (OBSCURA,TRIPTYKON) Woodshed Studios in Landshut, Germany where the drums were cut. Mastering duties were once again handled by Jacob Hansen(VOLBEAT, DESTRUCTION) at Hansen Studios in Ribe, Denmark.

Mike Keneally, Marco Minnemann: Evidence of Humanity new CD and DVD

Mike Keneally (guitar); Marco Minnemann (drums)

One bright morning, world-renowned drummer Marco Minnemann settled down behind the DW kit in his secluded hideaway, punched the record button, and proceeded to pound out an astounding 52-minute improvised solo. When it was finished, he christened it Normalizer 2 and offered it as a sort of gift to a handful of his favorite guitarists, relishing the prospect of each adding his own signature madness to the mix.

Mike Keneally was someone Marco hoped would dig the idea. In the throes of recording his intense and complex Scambot 1 opus, Mike leapt at Marco's offer— the creation of Evidence of Humanity would be a joyous, freewheeling counterpoint to his meticulous work on Scambot. "A fun ride," Mike would recall.

The ecstatic result is two of the world's foremost musicians improvising together, but not at the same time. It's a record unlike any other that Mike has recorded (but probably closest to Nonkertompf, his indefinable, mostly instrumental 1999 solo extravaganza). Evidence of Humanity seems to have a life of its own, mutating and maturing with each listen.

Accompanying the Evidence of Humanity CD is a region-free NTSC DVD containing a tasty reimagining of the original concept. This time, Mike and Marco got together in real time and vaulted into the ether for another 52-minute musical improvisation, a feat that was videotaped for your pleasure. The DVD also includes an insightful conversation between the two kindred musical spirits, shot in the back seat of a car hurtling toward the cover shoot in the Southern California desert's dilapidated Salton Sea.

Mike Keneally: Baking @ the Potato

Mike Keneally | Bryan Beller |Joe Travers
Baking @ the Potato (CD +DVD)
Five years after the Mike Keneally Band's Guitar Therapy Live triumph at LA's intimate Baked Potato club, a most worthy sequel is born.
This time, Mike raises the stakes by adding guitarist Griff Peters to the mix, allowing the quintet to rise to new heights of musical power, diversity and subtlety. Live favorites are mixed delectably with seldom-played gems from Mike's catalogue to create a truly astonishing DVD and CD set.
The region-free NTSC DVD of the entire September 15, 2010 concert features stereo audio, DTS 5.1 Surround and Dolby 5.1 Surround, and the CD comes in just seconds short of the maximum possible 80 minutes

Billy Sheehan: Niacin Live at the Tokyo Blue Note 1996

From Wikipedia: "Niacin is a neo-fusion instrumental trio featuring Billy Sheehan, Dennis Chambers and John Novello.[1] Founded in 1996, the band's name comes from the timbral foundation of the Hammond B3 organ; vitamin B3 is also known as niacin.

While the members pursue solo and sideman projects, they have continued to record and tour as a unit to remarkable critical and fan success[citation needed] — given the narrow and decidedly non-commercial focus of instrumental fusion as a genre."

MEATHEAD on my mind this week:-)

Stevie Ray Vaughan: 1985 Guitar World Interview

Guitar World's second interview with Stevie Ray Vaughan, from the November 1985 issue. The original story by Bruce Nixon started on page 28 and ran with the headline, "It's Star Time: Stevie's been in the spotlight so long now, he's just beginning to realize -- with the help of Clapton, Townshend and Albert King -- that everybody's eyes are on him."

Something was up. Stevie Ray Vaughan looked like the cat that swallowed the canary.

He had plenty of reason to be pleased, of course: A few weeks earlier, Vaughan and his band, Double Trouble, had received their first Grammy (in the ethnic music category, for some tunes on a Montreux Jazz Festival blues anthology), capping a year in which they'd won a number of other industry awards.

After seeing their first two albums climb into the upper reaches of the charts, they'd toured widely at home and abroad and were, at that moment, in the midst of finishing up work on their third record, Soul To Soul.

But something more than a year of new triumphs and successes was on Stevie Ray's mind, and he was being deliberately and playfully vague. Nothing arouses your curiosity faster than that. He positively seemed to glow.

Was he born again?

"Something like that." There was the faint wisp of a knowing smile le under the broad-brimmed hat. It was a white hat, too-not the black Man With No Name hat that's become a trademark of sorts.

Quit drinking and smoking?

He held up his glass. "No."

Make up with his wife and family over something?

"That's part of it." more

Steve Hackett: Beyond the Shrouded Horizon interview

After 24 albums, does it still feel fresh?

It does. I still get a thrill out of making music. I also get a thrill out of making it right. I don’t have too much time, because the clock is ticking, I suspect. I don’t mess around with the things I don’t love. I jump in with two feet these days. I’m thinking of the guitar work on “The Phoenix Flown." Recently I saw — at a Joe Bonamassa show — and then when I was talking to him — during playing — he played one of my tunes, “Los Endos” from way back. He was very much Joe, who plays blues guitar, but he played with this sort of commitment, and he brought a freshness to it, even though we’ve all heard changes in blues guitar at the time. It’s what the solo does within that landscape, within that fixed perimeter.

So when I was playing this part on “The Phoenix Flown,” I was thinking of a tone that he had at one point where he played a bit fast but within that played slowly and a bit sweeter with an upper harmonic on it and a bit of reverb and I thought, I recognize myself in these sounds, where the guitar starts to walk and get a little more fiery, where it’s a little more voice-like. Lots of guitarists are always trying to chase “the woman’s voice.” It’s where you go, “That note — that could be a voice.” I sometimes hear it from a distance, and I realize that could be an opera, where someone’s in the next room calling you. I look for the soprano. more
