News: Get additional grades with Rockschool’s Revised Band Exams

Get additional grades with Rockschool’s Revised Band Exams

Rockschool’s unique Band Exams offer the opportunity for students to turn all those hours spent at band practice into accredited qualifications. Rockschool have now revised the exams bringing in a new repertoire from the acclaimed 2012 Syllabus. Head to their news section now to check out the Rockschool band performing Grade 5 piece ‘Geek’ and grab more details on how to enter.
Playing in a band is often a vital part of being involved in rock and pop. Rockschool’s Band Exams recognise that the most important aspect of playing together is being aware of the other musicians’ parts and how they work together. Now students can get accredited qualifications from learning together in a band as well as those earned individually from the Guitar, Bass and drum exam courses.
Rockschool’s 2012-2018 Syllabus is full of specially written pieces that students will love to play. Check out the Rockschool band playing ‘Geek’ on YouTube or Vimeo. The Rockschool Guitar, Bass and Drums Grade books all contain the same tracks at 3, 5 and 8 so band members can learn their parts individually before practising and performing the pieces as a group. These books are also great for Teachers. They can assess individual and band performances, use the books to drive school band practices during lunch hours or use the material when organising end of term concerts.
For the exams, groups can perform five pieces from the Rockschool grade books, or three pieces and two free choice pieces. Each band member will have the opportunity to improvise during the exam thus gaining even more real world skills through performance. Plus successful Grade 8 students will get 55 to 75 UCAS points.
Individual graded pieces for each instrument are now available to download as PDFs and audio files for £2.99 from or you can get the books. To find out more visit the Band Exams page on the Rockschool website for more information.

Guthrie Govan: Guitar Player add the Aristocrat to the Gallery of the Greats!

Guthrie Govan
Few guitarists have excited GP readers—and guitarists worldwide—as much as Goven and his prog rock power trio the Aristocrats. As Joe Satriani remarked: “What sets Guthrie apart is that no matter what he’s doing—picking, tapping, slapping, playing legato, whatever—he mixes every- thing up gracefully and absolutely nails each approach.”

THROUGH ITS READERS’ POLL AND VARIOUS OTHER initiatives, Guitar Player has bestowed a bounty of awards on inspirational artists, pioneering manufacturers, and groundbreaking products for many years. For the magazine’s 45th anniversary in 2012, we are unifying all of our various honors under the Guitar Player Hall of Fame banner. In every November issue, the GP staff will announce the annual inductees.

Jess Lewis: Baboon - This Town Needs Guns

Jess Lewis - Baboon - This Town Needs Guns Cover
Hi all, I love this TTNG song, so I thought I'd try and learn it.. anyway here's my attempt- most definitely not perfect, but I'm only human.. so that's my excuse. Again I apologize for the visual/camera quiality, this time I tried recording that part with my mobile thinking it'd be better than a webcam, clearly that failed so yeah.. the video also glitched when recording, it goes slightly out of sync part way so I'm sorry about that...
Chees, Jess

News: Industry experts deliver BA (Hons) in Music Business at the Institute, London

The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance is preparing for a new intake of students for its esteemed Music Business degree*. The course will be led by some of the industry’s most influential individuals and covers the principles of business and management both generally and in the music sector specifically.

The course gives students the unique opportunity to work hands-on alongside countless musicians, writers and performers, engaging in artist management, A&R, marketing, radio, PR and publishing. This provides students with real world opportunities to manage and learn throughout the course.

Based in the heart of London’s music scene, this custom built degree will give students the unique opportunity to build networks and connections in the centre of the UK music industry. With unrivalled ties to the industry, students will have access to musicians and events throughout the three year period of study from start to finish.

The faculty comprises of specialised tutors and industry professionals with valuable experience from the world of promotion, radio, PR and publishing. Current tutors include marketing specialist Graham Lee, whose career in the music industry has spanned over 23 years beginning at Virgin Records and has since worked in senior roles for Sony Music at Columbia Records and INCredible Records, and Becky Jones, the last front woman of Groove Armada.
Korda Marshall and Steve Ager (successful radio promoter of artists such as Nirvana, Guns ‘n’ Roses and Whitney Houston) are further examples of visiting tutors with the skill and practice to deliver module topics such as ‘marketing principles for music’, ‘music publishing & contracts’ and ‘strategic business management in the music industry’. They will be drawing on their experience and expertise to give students first-hand knowledge of what to expect and how to progress further within the music industry.

Programme leader Ken Foreman said:
“I am delighted to be joined by such well established industry professionals and very excited to be a part of this amazing faculty. It’s so important that students looking to work in the music business are provided with the skills and expertise needed to succeed, and what better way to learn than from the most reputable and experienced people in the business”
The course also boasts numerous industry guest speakers including Debs Wild, discoverer and web ambassador of Coldplay, and Mark Gale from Universal Publishing. The programme is also supported by ATC Management, the innovative artist-development organisation set-up by Radiohead manager, Brian Message.
