Marc Cooper: cancer fund

In November 2015 I was rushed to the hospital from a very painful attack of kidney stones. After being in the hospital for hours a CT scan was ordered only to have the doctor come to tell us there was much more than kidney stones that showed up on the scan. I was told I had tumors in both lungs and possibly it had metastasized to my pancreas. Within days new blood work and CT scans showed that the pancreas was 100% clean but my lungs weren't. Since this diagnosis I started to notice continual pain in my left lower lung, and after a series of biopsies and a PET scan it revealed that I have Plasmacytoma-myeloma or a Lymphoma with extensive plasma cell differentiation. (It has been stated that this cancer could be stage 4, but can't be confirmed yet. In the meantime the constant waiting has been extremely stressful on myself, my wife, Renee and our daughter, Lacey.) Many more tests are now needed to conclusively know more before any treatment options can be started. So more invasive surgical procedures will need to be performed very soon. I'm scheduled to have one of the largest tumors removed from my right lung in the end of January 2016.

Being originally from Canada, I have had the joy of making my living as a musician, producing and making records in Canada, the US and throughout Asia; authoring 8 published books on guitar instruction, and performing all over the globe with many fine musicians from around the world. If you are interested in knowing more about what I do, go to

I knew of the need of having medical insurance in the US and have always had it, but now these medical costs, treatment options, loss of work, the financial strain on my family has caused us to call out for some very needed help and for very needed prayer.

Your donations, any amount large or small, are vital and humbly appreciated and will provide relief from the constant out of pocket costs. Even if you can't donate, we ask that you'd please share this fundraiser with as many people as you can. We believe miracles still do happen! Help us and join my fight to kick this cancer right to the curb!

Stevie Nimmo: confirms “Sky Won’t Fall” album, plus co-headline UK tour with Ben Poole

Stevie Nimmo confirms “Sky Won’t Fall” album, plus co-headline UK tour with Ben Poole

Award-winning blues rock guitarist and singer-songwriter, Stevie Nimmo, will release is second solo album “Sky Won’t Fall” viaManhaton Records on Friday 4th March. One half of The Nimmo Brothers, this will be Stevie’s second solo release since 2010’s debut acoustic album, The Wynds of Life.

Stevie will embark on a co-headline tour with Ben Poole throughout the months of February, March, April and May. The tour will kick off on Thursday 4th February at the Bootlegger’s Bar in Kendal. Visit the official UK album and tour press page here -

Released by Manhaton Records (the same label that releases King King’s albums), it’s a curious realisation that Sky Won’t Fall is only the second solo album of Stevie’s career. In mitigation, the Glaswegian bandleader has been busy: since the late-’90s, there has been the small matter of helming legendary blues-rock outfit The Nimmo Brothers alongside younger sibling Alan. Sky Won’t Fall was recorded in just ten days snatched between Nimmo tour commitments. “It was a bit frantic,” admits Stevie. “But even with all the madness, the project went very well.”

The sessions at Nottingham’s Superfly Studios ran so smoothly, it’s a testament to the near-telepathic chemistry between Stevie and his crack core band. On drums, Craig Bacon drives the material with power and nuance. On bass, Mat Beable provides the thrilling counterpoint to Stevie’s soulful guitar work and evocative vocals. Flanked by engineer Andy Banfield, the album is produced by King King’s drummer Wayne Proctor. “Wayne was the man in charge of getting my ideas out of my head and down on a recording,” says Stevie. “Not an easy task, but he nailed it.”

News: GoGo Tuners Releases New Horizon Pedal Tuner

GoGo Tuners Releases New Horizon Pedal Tuner

JANUARY 13, 2016 - GoGo Tuners debuts their latest product, the GoGo Horizon Pedal Tuner. The new tuner features a larger screen than previous models, and the first horizontal screen offered by GoGo Tuners. The compact pedal also keeps popular features intact for which GoGo Tuners are known, such as pitch calibration and tight tuning accuracy, as well as durability and ease of use. The Horizon Pedal Tuner will be available starting in February through dealers and distributors worldwide.

The new Horizon tuning pedal has a calibration function with wide reference pitches from 430Hz to 450Hz, allowing for tighter tuning accuracy. It uses chromatic tuning with +/- .5-cent accuracy and a wide detection range of A0 (27.5Hz) - C8 (4186.00Hz). The pedal is equipped with true bypass and can also provide daisy chain power for other pedals. The new Horizon tuning pedal captures the ‘bigger is better’ philosophy with a new, larger high-definition big screen easily visible in all lighting situations, perfect for any stage or studio. With GoGo’s signature “green you’re in, red you’re out”, tuning becomes easy by eliminating any of the guesswork when tuning, which appeals to players of all levels. The entire display changes green when you are in tune, and red when you are out of tune. The pedal tuner features a metal chassis for improved durability and a longer lifetime of performance.

Tom Hess: The Best Methods For Motivating Your Guitar Students To Practice More

The Best Methods For Motivating Your Guitar Students To Practice More
By Tom Hess
What is the one skill that your guitar students have to understand in order to grow into excellent musicians fast? Is it improving guitar technique? Is it learning music theory? Mastering ear training? What about being able to write music?

Answer: it’s none of these things.
The single, most important skill they must learn from you is how to practice guitar efficiently.
Truth is, your guitar students do NOT grow into excellent guitarists during the time they spend in lessons with you. The real way they make progress is by practicing correctly at home in between lessons. Unless you get your students to continually practice at home, their guitar playing will not progress very quickly at all. This situation causes many students to give up on lessons and makes you look like a bad guitar teacher.
Before reading the remaining information of this article, take this two minute test to find out how good you are at teaching your guitar students the most effective way to practice. Once you’ve done this, continue reading below to learn the main steps for improving this area of your guitar teaching.
Here are five fundamental keys for inspiring your guitar students to practice:

#1: Truly Understand Your Guitar Students
The number one guitar teachers in the world fully know that they don’t just teach guitar... they teach people. This means that they have a real passion for the growth of their guitar students, want to know how they think, and want to understand their musical desires, plus why they have them. Every student you will ever have gets inspired from all different kinds of things and possesses unique reasons for wanting to play guitar better. Knowing them will help you meet their needs during lessons.
When your students can plainly see that you really have a passion for getting them to become better at guitar, they will start to trust you more and will become inspired to do their best to advance. This is crucial for getting them to put in their best effort to practice at home.
This influence will be much greater when your guitar students can observe a crystal-clear connection between practicing guitar and getting big results. I’ll speak more about this in just a moment.

#2: Help Your Guitar Students Get Instant Victories
Whenever you teach something to your guitar students, you also need to show them the best way to practice it. Help your students by giving them a quick mini practice session during the lesson so they can experience the correct way to practice the thing you taught them.
By doing this, you achieve the following positive goals:

1. Your students will understand what it means to practice guitar the right way. When they attempt to practice what you’ve taught them during a lesson, you can spot their mistakes, fix them and increase the chances of them practicing correctly when they are alone.

2. Your students feel good about the small victory they have obtained. This will motivate them to practice at home.
Most teachers do not do this... instead they simply cram as much information as possible into each lesson. Other teachers think that telling their guitar students what to do is the same as “teaching them how to practice effectively”.
This extremely common guitar teaching mistake ensures that the majority of your students will both: not make progress at home because they practice incorrectly AND not make overall progress, becoming frustrated (and quitting). By not making any progress, they will become less and less motivated to practice guitar and get better in the future.
To find out how to solve this problem and get your students to become great guitar players in every lesson, read this column about how to teach your guitar students to practice.

#3: Generate A Positive Snowball Effect
In addition to showing your students how to practice the right way, you have to boost their self-confidence. To accomplish this, you must continually get them to understand the clear cause and effect relationship between proper practice and increasing guitar playing skills. When you teach your guitar students how to practice the right way, and give them small victories, remind them:

1. Their guitar practice is paying off and helping them become better players.

2. What and how you tell them to practice is moving them in the direction towards reaching their highest guitar playing goals.
This kind of positive mental reinforcement will gain your student’s trust and make them feel inspired to keep practicing.

#4: Inspire Your Students To Compete (In A Friendly Way)
When your students see the great progress being made by other students you teach, they will become motivated to get better for themselves. Utilize this positive peer pressure through encouraging healthy competition early on between your students. Praise your very best students and tell your other students about how they will also become killer players once they start doing the same things your top students do.
The most effective and simple way to promote this kind of friendly competition among your students is to teach them in a class setting rather than exclusively in a one on one setting. Use group classes to give your students much more motivation for practicing guitar so they can get better quick.
To learn a lot more about how teaching group lessons will build your guitar teaching effectiveness (and income) watch this free video about growing a guitar teaching business.

#5: Show Proof Of Your Student’s Results By Tracking Their Progress
It’s not uncommon that your students will stop practicing because they aren’t sure that they’re making progress with your lessons. To fix this issue and motivate them to practice at home, track and measure their results in every area of their guitar playing. Then, remind them ever few lessons about the amount of progress they are making. This is a great way of showing them that their hard work is paying off, leading them to feel motivated to get even better.

A huge benefit (for you) of this is, when your students see that they’ve progressed with you and feel motivated to practice more, they stay with you longer.

To learn the most effective method for tracking musical progress for guitar players, check out this tool for improving your guitar playing as fast as possible.

As you implement these 5 main keys for inspiring your guitar students to continue practicing at home, you will begin seeing your students make TONS of progress, helping grow YOUR positive image as the number one guitar instructor in your city.

Gray Guitars London -  small, custom guitar shop based in Richmond-upon-Thames, UK

Gray Guitars are on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram our YouTube channel is
coming soon.

Gray Guitars is a small, custom guitar shop based in Richmond-upon-Thames, UK that specialises in Fender-inspired instruments. We use the finest materials to create bespoke guitars that are both innovative and familiar. We are on the official list of trade users for Bare Knuckle Pickups; we love the sound of these amazing units and have used them to great success on a wide variety of guitars.

I love to offer switching options; many of our guitars offer push-pull options that provide interesting and eminently usable sounds – widening the sonic palette of the classic guitar models of the 50s without adding mini-switches or extra knobs.

We use roasted maple for our necks. Roasted maple necks are strong, stable and beautiful; and when finished with oil and wax, provide a lightning fast playing surface.

We finish our guitars with nitrocellulose lacquer, just the like the classic makers of the golden era of electric guitars. We find that using this finish gives a live, resonant instrument that will of course check and age beautifully.

With exacting attention to detail, our instruments are a joy to play. With the help of the ‘Plek’ machine in-house at Charlie Chandlers’ workshop, our fret jobs are second to none – perfect to accompany any playing style.

With the likes of Lol Crème (10cc, Godley and Crème, Art of Noise) and Tim Renwick (Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton, David Bowie) already touring and recording with our guitars we are now launching into the guitar community.

News: PRS Guitars Private Stock Team Celebrates 20th Anniversary with Guitars of the Month Program

PRS Guitars Private Stock Team Celebrates 20th Anniversary with Guitars of the Month Program

(STEVENSVILLE, MD) January 12, 2016 – 2016 marks the 20th Anniversary of Private Stock, and PRS is celebrating with the return of the program that started it all: Guitars of the Month.

“At the time [1996], the original Guitars of the Month program was a way for us to experiment with new designs and features. To this day, that innovation and specialization is still at the heart of the Private Stock program, and we are very excited to try out some new ideas for our 20th Anniversary,” said Paul Reed Smith, PRS Guitars founder and Managing General Partner.

To that end, the Private Stock team will deliver a unique design each month in limited numbers (which will vary by design), as always featuring the detailed craftsmanship and exquisite materials that define Private Stock. The January Guitar of the Month is a Private Stock Hollowbody Bass. With an authoritative tone and elegant appearance, this bass is addictive to play and a collector’s piece to be treasured. The 4-string Hollowbody Bass is outfitted with a dual coil Bartolini pickup that is splittable via a push/pull tone control. This pickup design, along with the center block/hollow wing construction, delivers an airy, deep tone with strong lows and plenty of top-end definition.

The “January” Private Stock Hollowbody Bass also features exquisite woods and inlays from the Private Stock Vault, including a quilted maple top and swamp ash back, curly maple neck with ebony fretboard and mother of pearl birds, and an ebony headstock veneer with mother of pearl Private Stock Eagle and “January” engraved banner. The body is finished with high-gloss nitro, while the 30.25” scale length neck sports a 10” radius and satin nitro finish that plays comfortably and fast.

Six of these guitars will be made for January 2016, commemorating Private Stock’s 20th Anniversary.

For more on the Guitars of the Month and the Private Stock program, please visit

The original Guitars of the Month were cased between December 1994 and March 1996. They provided the opportunity to experiment with new ideas and led directly to the creation of the Private Stock program with the first “official” Private Stock instrument casing on April 19, 1996.

News: Asking Alexandria Direct Support To Bullet For My Valentine In North America

English Metalcore outfit ASKING ALEXANDRIA will return to the road in North America as direct support for Bullet For My Valentine on their British Invasion Tour this winter. The Platinum Selling group ended 2015 with the announcement of their fourth studio album, The Black, which is slated for a March release this year on Sumerian Records

The Black, which is the band's first album with new frontman Denis Stoff, reflects the apex of Asking Alexandria’s singular style. However, that dynamic approach has defined them since day one. It’s what made millions fall in love with them on 2009’s Stand Up and Scream and turned “The Final Episode (Let’s Change the Channel)” into an RIAA Gold-certified smash. The 2011 follow-up, Reckless & Relentless, would bow at #9 on the Billboard Top 200, while From Death to Destiny debuted at #5 in 2013. Now, The Black represents a new beginning and the commencement of their biggest, boldest, and best chapter yet.

“This is a new era,” states lead guitarist Ben Bruce. “We got a kick in the ass to bring that passion, angst, and aggression back. I hope when people walk away they simply think, 'Fuck yes, my favorite band is back.'”

*In addition to the British Invasion tour, Asking Alexandria will play select headlining shows on a handful of off dates from the tour. These shows are noted in the complete list of dates below. Please pay special attention to these as the band's list is open to press at these shows*
