A stellar line-up of British musos. Holdsworth, Bruford, Jobson (a Teessider from Billingham, good lad) and Wetton delivered a brilliant album in 1977. Was it prog rock, was it jazz rock? Whatever it was it was jaw-droppingly astonishing.

New guitar day! A lawsuit Ibanez flying V (PR1660). I've wanted one of these since seeing Paul Gilbert use one many years back. This was a top of the line model in 1985, but Ibanez only made them for a few months before being sued by Jackson over the Rhoads V resemblance. The bridge design pre-dates the Edge tremolo, and the neck is a little bit thicker than the Wizards that came after. I've read this was the first model to feature the now standard Ibanez pointed headstock. This one is in a rare custom color that's either a faded early Road Flare, Five Alarm Red, or it could even be Carotene Orange. Factory oil-finished maple neck, 22-fret ebony fingerboard with a flat radius, and an American alder body. #nerd
New York, NY – IZZ guitarist, Paul Bremner’s new studio album, The Witness, is scheduled for release on April 26, 2016. IZZ fans have grown to associate Paul’s distinctive and melodic guitar playing with the “IZZ Sound”. Paul has earned the respect of the progressive rock community by writing such memorable songs as “Light From Your Eyes”, “Illuminata” and co-writing the IZZ classics “Late Night Salvation” and “Can’t Feel the Earth, Part II,” among many others. Paul’s new studio album of 10 songs showcases both his dynamic guitar playing and his penchant for writing emotional music and lyrics.
“I am thrilled to release this collection of songs” says Bremner. “They feature a wide range of moods and emotions and I think IZZ fans will find them intriguing and satisfying.”
The first track of the album “From Here I Can See the Horizon” features a powerful and exciting lead vocal performance from Anmarie Byrnes while the emotionally charged “Warm” spotlights a hauntingly beautiful lead vocal from Laura Meade. The energetic fury of the title track “The Witness” features Brian Coralian on drums while Greg DiMiceli is showcased on several tracks including the jazz/funk-inspired “No Remorse”.
Tom Galgano, who sings lead vocals on several tracks and who engineered and co-produced the album with Bremner notes, “Every song on this album is different and yet they are all connected by Paul’s unique guitar sound and songwriting. It’s been an absolute pleasure working on this album – in fact in many ways it’s been like working on an ‘alternate’ IZZ record.”
The last track on the album, “Last Exit Before Toll” comes in at over 20 minutes and encompasses the full range of Bremner’s musical palette. “I am very happy to include this extended piece which I hope will take the listener on a journey; and I am happy that it features all of my IZZ band mates.”
Paul Bremner’s The Witness will be available for purchase on iTunes, at Amazon.com and at your favorite online retailer on April 26, 2016.
The first stage of pre-production on Spiritual Machines has been lots of fun. I’ve spent an extra couple of weeks working on guitar tones, synth sounds and generally putting together the sonic palette for this new album.
This week I’m going through the demos of the new songs and starting to develop them into the final versions.
There is going to be a lot more layering on this album I think. Already the demos display more different guitar sounds than I have used before.
I’ve been recording video footage as I go, but haven’t had a chance to edit anything together yet. I want to keep on top of my deadline. I’ll see how I go the next couple of weeks.

Metal Dog is the stunning new release from guitarist Andy Summers. An all instrumental album replete with razor edge guitar that pushes to the outer edges of generic description. Kicking off with the title track which opens with a compulsive metallic figure that insinuates itself immediately, the track bursts into almost an indie rock chorus in it's B section to be followed by a quirky fuzzed out guitar solo that rises and rises -until it merges back into the song like choruses that take us out.
Tracks in the middle of the CD Qualia and How Long is Now are loaded with freaky almost Balinese textures. These compositions- exotic as they are - retain a sunny mood, rather than the darkness that is associated with so much loop style music. This feeling is carried further by Summers in the following track Harmonograph which opens with a guitar solo that pierces the honeyed texture like an arrow- eventually falling into a wild blanket of harmonic distortion for a release that is like bathing in warm waters. Ishango Bone the fourth track on the CD presents a seemingly simple guitar figure that snakes along in what might seem to be a dark and primitive landscape , but then falls into what might be a radiant valley indicated by the soaring guitar and then- as if night falls - returns to the primal source from which it emerged.
There are many other track on Metal Dog that highlight Summers innate guitar skill but more importantly these tracks illustrate the use of the instrument to achieve a modern guitar music that is fresh and challenging and a style that pushes past the standard ideas of genre. At turns lyrical, dark and cinematic the result is one of intrigue and ultimate reward.

Track 3 Ishango Bone
Track 4 Vortex Street
Track 5 Bitter Honey

Esperanza Spalding presents her latest project Emily's D+Evolution a rekindling of her childhood interest in theater, poetry and movement, which delves into a broader concept of performance. Taking a new approach to her on-stage persona, the remarkable Spalding taps into new creative energy, delivering musical vignettes inspired during a "sleepless night of full moon inspiration."
As she puts it, "Emily is my middle name, and I'm using this fresh persona as my inner navigator. This project is about going back and reclaiming un-cultivated curiosity, and using it as a compass to move forward and expand. My hope for this group is to create a world around each song, there are a lot of juicy themes and stories in the music.
We will be staging the songs as much as we play them, using characters, video, and the movement of our bodies."
