Dave B and instrumentalcase.com have lined up another interview, this time with Marcel Coenen

Yes, I also teach guitar, which is how I make my living. I always use metronome when I teach, and I try to get my students to listen to themselves when they play. But I always make sure they keep on having fun when playing. And like I mentioned earlier, I also have an instructional DVD available. Maybe there will be a second one in the future, perhaps with a different approach, but at the moment I’m focused on releasing another solo album and a new CD with Sun Caged.

Marcel Coenen features on a new release. The production of German musician Hubi Meisel's third concept album, which will be entitled "Trinity", has been in progress for quite a while already. For the instrumental music, Hubi once again closely cooperated with French keyboardist/composer Vivien Lalu, and also the rest of the "Trinity" crew consists of well-known colleagues. The full lineup is a follows:
Hubi J. Meisel - Vocals
Vivien Lalu - Keyboards
Wolfgang Kerinnis - Guitar
Marcel Coenen - Guitar

Marcel Coenen is back with Sun Caged for their next release. The new album is called "Artemisia" and will be released on March 23rd through Lion Music.

Marcel Says:
Sun Caged started out as a project back in 1999. Guitarist Marcel Coenen was at that time still in the band Lemur Voice. When Lemur Voice disbanded Sun Caged became a full time band and the hard work began. Several demo's were recorded and sent to labels before the band signed with finnish label Lion Music, meanwhile the band played as support of Queensrijche, VandenPlas, Threshold and they played on several festivals. The first album simply called "Sun Caged" was released in October 2003 and got very good critics worldwide. The album was mixed by Arjen Lucassen (Ayreon/Star One/Stream Of Passion). The band played more shows like on the famous Sweden Rock festival in 2004. Then some members left and the hunt for new bandmembers began. They were found shortly after and the band started working on new songs for the second album. 15 songs were written and were all recorded in the middle of 2006. 10 songs from these recording sessions will see the light with the release of "Artemisia".

Sun Caged will play a show to celebrate the release of the album, the show will be played in Plato in Helmond (The Netherlands, close to Eindhoven) on March 23rd, the day also the album is being released.

Gigs planned:
March 23: cd release party Helmond, Plato
April 21: Roermond, Azijnfabriek
May 26: Weert, Bosuil (as support of Spock's Beard)

Marcel is now endorsed by Bo-El guitars . Check out his new video in mpeg format, or other videos.

Background:
Like Richard Hallebeek, Marcel was born in Holland. Starting guitar at the age of 10, Marcel came to play in heavy metal bands by the age of 15. Around this time Marcel, like many players of that time, became heavily influenced Yngwie Malmsteen and also other heavier acts around at that time.

He later started a progress band, AURA, in 1994 covering tunes by Rush, Fates Warning , Dream Theater and Queensryche. After recording a demo he was picked up by Mike Varney connected Magna Carta label specialising in progressive music and home of artists such as Jordan Rudess Liquid Tension Experiment and Andy West with Rama . The bands name was also changed to Lemur Voice.

Marcel started to gain some recognition for his guitar abilities and picked up an endorsement from Ibanez guitars.

Since then Marcel has recorded with european progressive outfit, Sun Caged who signed a recording contract with Lion music.

So why is he featured in this blog, well he also went onto to release a 12 song instrumental guitar CD, Guitar Talk. This release clearly shows some of his influences from Racer X , Paul Gilbert, Greg Howe to Allan Holdsworth.

Those lucky enough to buy early releases of this project also got an extra Video CD with Marcel covering all the tracks live. For those of you unlucky enough to have missed it, you can now get the guitar videos from the Marcel Coenen web site.
