Show Boat: Ol' Man River - William Warfield

Hayden loved music and always enjoyed listening to female singers like Dion Warwick, but particularly the pop music of ABBA which would always have him singing along

ABBA - I Have A Dream
During his last weeks at the home everyone there enjoyed watching and listen to the Film "The sound of music" and it became a regular favourite on the TV. Even when he was ill, Hayden would instantly remember the songs and sing along. Hayden loved one track in particular, Edelweiss. One of the nurses who looked after Hayden told me that Hayden sung Edelweiss to her all night. This nurse was also with Hayden, holding his hand, when he passed away.

His Life
Hayden was born in Salford, Manchester in 1926. He was the eldest of three children, a brother to Raymond and Joan.

Hayden's school realised his potential and put him forward for the 11 plus exams for a new grammar school which had recently opened in Sale. Hayden passed these with flying colours and was soon accelerated through the education system.

Finally going on to study Chemistry at Edinburgh University. During the course he taught himself German as this was required.

Like many his studies were disrupted by the second world war, where even with flat feet, Hayden was called up to fight and trained in the RAF, becoming a bomb aimer navigator also flying Avro Ansons and Chipmunks in the process.

Hayden completed his honours degree after the cessation of hostilities.

He chose to be a research chemist rather than study to be a GP, moving from Manchester to Bristol to gain employment. He got a job as a research Chemist with Imperial Smelting at Avonmouth.

Hayden married Vivian after they moved to Bristol. Together they had three children Myself, Chris and Laurie. Vivian and Hayden were married for almost 54 years.

During his working life he studied scientific Russian, to translate Russian patents and chemistry books. Unfortunately, it was never used, except to translate the names of ships in the spy thriller books he read.

During his work he created new processes and these were patented globally and eventually scaled up to large production plants that generated millions of pounds for the company.

Hayden was well respected by his colleagues at work, even when they worked for competitor companies. Was also well liked by the clerical and support staff.

He often used a cylindrical slide-rule and had one of the first electronic calculators in the country. He spent many evenings sat in his chair in front of the TV, puffing on his pipe, doing sophisticated calculations for work.

He was employed by the same company for thirty nine years, finally retiring at the age of sixty five.

In retirement Hayden concentrated his energies on his garden and family

Hayden spent his final year at Park Farm House care home in Pucklechurch. He was happy and well looked after.

Hayden's hobbies and interests

Hayden loved walking and often took Myself, hid grand children Steven, Gary and Emily for long walks... and no doubt if he had been well he would have walked with Dan too.

Hayden loved swimming, each week he would swim a mile and he could swim on his back with his feet out of the water.... which was a trick that took many years for his kids to learn.

Hayden was a naturally talented artist enjoying drawing and painting, although he did not discover this until his later years.

Hayden loved making colourful Easter eggs from papier mache. He also helped make prize winning Easter bonnets for his children and grand children.

Hayden loved making paper aeroplanes, kites, box kites, umbrella kites. He loved to make model aeroplanes... that didn't quite work, like a Hawker Hurricane that was too heavy to fly and Hawker hunter where he could not light the engine... He often made the our Airfix models overnight, even if he wasn't asked too. He also had a boomerang that he thought would not work, but he threw it and it came back and hit him on the nose... much to the amusement of the boys.

Hayden loved gardening. Topiary became a hobby and he made lots of shapes out of the bushes in the garden. He was always digging, "moving holes around the garden". He enjoyed growing bonsai trees. Once his prize potatoes were nicked and he was in the Evening post under the title "Spud nicked".

Hayden loved being a cub helper and was Baloo for over twenty six years. He loved making cub wide games, going on cub camp,

teaching meteorology and clouds . Hayden also loved astronomy, he knew all the constellations and showed you where they were in the sky. This was another favourite for the cubs. Although he was a cub helper, he would never wear a uniform because of his memories of the war.

Hayden loved musicals, Guy and Dolls, Porgie and Bess, West Side Story, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Calamity Jane, Oklahoma, South Pacific. Playing the records or later watching the videos on TV, always singing along in complete enjoyment.

My daughter Molly said "Hayden was a very special man and she loved him and he will be missed".
