Andreas Varady: astonishing 12 year old jazz swing player... burn your guitar now!

Born in Slovakia, into a Gypsy family, the exceptionally gifted Andreas Varady has been playing the guitar since the age of four. Although only twelve years old, he is already an accomplished and imaginative musician, inspired by his favourite guitarists George Benson, Wes Montgomery and Joe Pass. Taught by his guitarist father Bandi, Andreas plays completely by ear, and since moving to Ireland with his family in 2008 has gained much experience through busking and attending Limerick’s weekly jazz workshop.

Andreas performed on RTE’s ‘The Guitar’ in 2009 and has since recorded for BBC TV and radio. Following his popularity on You Tube, he has been invited to play at many international festivals this year, including Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival, Sligo Jazz Festival, Derry Jazz Festival, Cork Jazz Festival and Brecon Jazz Festival. He recently received a scholarship from the Arts Council to study at this year's prestigious Skidmore Jazz Institute summer school in New York, making him the youngest musician to have been accepted there.

Ireland's drumming star David Lyttle describes Andreas as 'immensely talented and already very advanced with an exciting future'. He will be featuring Andreas throughout the year in his Irish group, his 'Jazz Juniors' educational scheme, and also as a special guest on his collaborative tours with international musicians such as US trumpet heavyweight Terell Stafford and EU guitar icon Andreas Oberg.
