Joel Hoekstra, Tony Franklin, Todd Vinciguerra: VHF
VHF RELEASES DEBUT ROCK INSTRUMENTAL CD

Mission Viejo, CA Rock legends (Vinciguerra Hoekstra Franklin) come together to form VHF on this killer rock instrumental CD, Very High Frequency.

VHF, the supergroup featuring drummer Todd "Vinny" Vinciguerra (the brain child behind the project), guitarist Joel Hoekstra's (Whitesnake, Night Ranger, Trans-Siberian Orchestra) and bassist Tony Franklin (The Firm, Blue Murder, Kenny Wayne Shepherd) have released their new Very High Frequency. Produced by Joe Floyd, Todd “Vinny” Vinciguerra and Tommy Kessler (Blondie) and mastered by David Donnelly. VHF Very High Frequency captures the classic rock vibe of Zeppelin, Vai, Pink Floyd mixed with their own rock stylings.

“What an amazing set this is. In fact, it is likely to make my “best of 2014” list. It’s got a great combination of progressive rock, jam band, space music and more. Everything here works really well and the whole thing flows like one cohesive piece.”  - G. W. Hill, Music Street Journal

Vinciguerra’s unique sequence of writing starts with the drum composition setting the tone before heading to Franklin for chord progression and underlying groove. Once a groove is established, the rhythm tracks are set in place for guitar virtuoso Joel Hoekstra's independent interpretation. The music is created from the bottom up, that is the drums are the creative force behind the band. The final piece contains parts by each musician uniquely composed, completely independent of each other, and done with complete artistic freedom by each musician.

“All musicians involved get to stretch their musical muscle and simultaneously showcase their abilities. Shattered Insomnia opens the album and has an infectious energy; each instrument clearly is audible. Whispers of the Soul is built around a Middle Eastern melody, which is prominent throughout the song. The guitar, drums and bass lay down a constant groove to keep your head bobbing. Suspended Animation is like a Led Zeppelin composition, with a Steve Vai-ish trippy thing going on, mixed in with classical guitar runs. Conception to Death (For 8 Guitars) is another mind-bender. Very High Frequency is a trip of sonic explorations.” - John Kindred, Hard Rock Haven.net

Groove oriented, trippy rock built from the drums up. That's what you get with V.H.F., a new concept for a band that stems from the brain of drummer Todd "Vinny" Vinciguerra. Taken from the blueprint set by Miles Davis' groundbreaking record Kind Of Blue, VHF starts with drummer Todd Vinny Vinciguerra setting the initial tone of the song, The song arrangement is made on drums, then passed along to legendary bassist Tony Franklin (THE FIRM, BLUE MURDER, Kenny Wayne Shepherd) for chord progression and underlying groove. Once a groove is established, the rhythm tracks are set in place for guitar virtuoso Joel Hoekstra's (NIGHT RANGER, TRANS SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA, ROCK OF AGES NYC) independent interpretation

Bassist Tony Franklin had this to say:

"I’m digging the completed VHF CD (Todd Vinny Vinciguerra, Joel Hoekstra, Tony Franklin The Fretless Monster)... Wow, actually! And it’s crazy how this thing came together. Vinny approached me with the idea. He wanted to lay down some song-oriented drum grooves and then have me play bass over them... it was wide open, whatever I wanted. So I did it, and had a blast. I put some time into it to come up with something creative, heavy, a little edgy and different, while still maintaining a “song-type” format. Vinny’s parts were great to play over - groove wise and idea wise. I was definitely inspired. Next we handed the tracks over to Joel Hoekstra who was totally on board and in tune with the concept. He took it to a whole other level.
When I listen to the tunes, they sound like we sat in the same room together, created the riffs, grooves and changes as a band, which couldn’t be further away from the truth! Haha. I’ve always maintained that nothing beats playing and recording in the same room together... but sometimes there are exceptions to the rule!!"
Joel Hoekstra had this to say:

Todd and I used to room together when I lived in Hollywood many moons ago. Great guy. He sent me this track of him playing a groove and Tony Franklin (The Firm, Blue Murder) playing an awesome riff oriented song structure to it. He told me to record whatever I felt like and the first track was so interesting, that I agreed to do an EP. I think for an instrumental cd, it's extremely interesting. It's a backwards writing concept...drums first, bass 2nd and guitar/melody last, but because of that it's extremely unique. It comes from more of a song/vibe/creativity place than most recordings in this genre. There's definitely a heavy, psychedelic aspect to it and that's something that appeals to me because it's completely different than any of the aforementioned projects.
