Jeff Beck is one of the most distinctive and singular driving forces behind why so many of us create instrumental music, guitar-based or otherwise.
His albums were the perfect blend of technical wizardry and just plain ol’ cool tunes. It was never too far over your head, but was also just wild enough to make you go “wait, what?!” And a whole lot of it was funky as hell.
As an improviser, he was always pushing it to the edge. Beck took risks. But at the same time, he was in complete command of his instrument and what he needed it to do. Almost as if he wanted you to think he’d fly off the rails at any moment, but secretly he knew exactly where he was going next. To have that kind of creative control of improvisational thought is uncanny. He could make his guitar sound like a broken washing machine in one phrase, and an angelic gospel singer in the next. He could express any emotion he wanted - beauty, pain, humour, anger, love…even sarcasm…it was all there. And he did it in a way that sounded only like him.
And in some magical way, even got better as he got older.
I am so grateful for him and his music. We’re all better musicians because of Jeff Beck.
