The John Wick universe features a hidden, highly structured underworld of elite assassins operating alongside ordinary society. It is governed by ancient traditions, strict codes of conduct, and its own unique economy.

Key Elements of the Underworld

The High Table: A shadowy council of twelve powerful crime lords who serve as the ultimate, ruthless authority over all assassins.
The Continental: A global chain of luxury hotels that act as strictly neutral ground. No "business" (murder) can be conducted on the premises.
The Currency: Assassins trade in specialized gold coins. These coins don't hold a set monetary value but instead represent a social contract, respect, and membership in the underworld.
Underworld Services: A dedicated network of tailors, armorers (sommeliers), and clean-up crews that cater exclusively to the needs of assassins.
The Rules + Consequences: Breaking the rules—such as violating the sanctuary of the Continental or refusing a blood oath (a Marker)—results in being declared Excommunicado. This revokes all underworld privileges and places a massive bounty on the rule-breaker's head.
