Dave Weckl: Biography & Album Information
Biography
Dave Weckl, born on January 8, 1960, in St. Louis, Missouri, is widely regarded as one of the most influential contemporary jazz-fusion drummers and musicians. After starting drums at age eight and playing in local jazz and pop groups, he moved to the East Coast in 1979 to study at the University of Bridgeport. Gaining acclaim in the New York club scene, he caught the attention of major artists like Peter Erskine, who recommended him for French Toast (precursor to the Michel Camilo band). This led to high-profile session work and a legendary 7-year stint with Chick Corea’s Elektric and Akoustic Bands starting in 1985, earning a Grammy and global recognition. Alongside his prolific career as a solo artist and bandleader, Weckl has collaborated extensively with top artists like Mike Stern, George Benson, and Paul Simon, and is renowned worldwide for his instructional media and educational work.
