Extensive Biography
Max Light grew up in the Washington, D.C. area before moving to Boston to attend the New England Conservatory, where he earned his Bachelor's Degree. During his six years in Boston, he became an essential fixture of the local scene, performing every weekend at the legendary Wally’s Jazz Cafe alongside world-renowned trumpeter Jason Palmer. He later relocated to New York City, completing his Master’s Degree at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College.
Light's breakthrough on the global stage came with his strong placement in the 2019 Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Competition. Since then, he has built a reputation as one of the most promising young standard-bearers of modern guitar-driven jazz. Known for what Guitar Player magazine praised as a "brainiac-like thirst for knowledge" and DownBeat hailed as masterclasses in "cutting paths through tricky meters," Light balances intellectual harmonic depth with deeply swinging accessibility.
As a prolific collaborator and bandleader, Light has performed and recorded alongside elite modern jazz heavyweights including Noah Preminger, Donny McCaslin, Christian Sands, Dan Weiss, Kim Cass, Colin Stranahan, and Jason Palmer. Whether recording intricate chord-melody duos, driving avant-garde quartets, or pushing the envelope with complex metric compositions on his acclaimed albums, Light stands at the vanguard of contemporary guitar expression.
