Here’s a funky new jam on my fretless Stradi bass with delay and Jack Irons on drums! Love playing with delay on fretless, it’s much fun to harmonize the melodies and slide through the chord changes with the delay tail catching up. I used a Walrus Audio D1 delay pedal, a Rodenberg 707b clean booster, a DG Hyper Luminal compressor, and a Seamoon FX Skye Machine chorus and MORE sub harmonic booster. I’m playing my fretless Stradi Symphony Cora bass made by the extraordinary luthier couple Marek and Agnieszka Dąbek from Poland. The bass has a Bocote fingerboard, a solid roasted Alder body, an Amazaque neck, and a quartersawn Oak top wood with Shou Sugi Ban fire finish. I used Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky strings and recorded with an Eich T-300 amp into my audio interface. I didn’t use any plugins or digital post processing, the sound comes directly from the pedals, amp, and bass.
The drums were recorded by Jack Irons, he’s the founding drummer of RHCP, former member of Pearl Jam, Eleven, Mark Lanegan band, etc. We met a few years ago at a studio session and have been working on several new music projects since, including some performance videos we released here on the Groove Lab. I’m grateful to be friends with Jack, he has this deep sense for groove and feel in his playing and is as humble and real as it gets. Jack recorded the drums in this video a few years back, it recently resurfaced and he sent it over to see what I’d come up with. I jammed on it for a while and came up with these grooves and melodies, then rehearsed for some time until I was able to record this video in one take. It still took quite a few takes to nail this, the intonation is a bit loose and there are some rough edges but to me that’s the beauty of fretless experimentation, capturing a moment in time. I mixed the drums and bass together in Cubase and mastered with Ozone with minimal EQ to preserve the original sound and tone. More music with Jack in the works, hope you’ll enjoy!
