Biography

Born on June 12, 1955, in Fergana, Uzbekistan, to an exiled Crimean Tatar family, Enver İzmaylov (also spelled Izmailov) is an internationally celebrated guitarist, composer, and musical innovator. Although he originally studied the bassoon at the Fergana Music School, graduating in 1973, he had played guitar since age fifteen and spent the 1980s performing with the jazz-fusion ensemble Sato. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, he returned to his ancestral homeland of Crimea, Ukraine, where he solidified his international solo career.

İzmaylov independently developed an astonishing two-handed touch-tapping technique on the fretboard, creating an intricate, piano-like polyphonic approach completely unprompted by Western contemporaries. His groundbreaking style allows him to tap independent basslines, chordal accompaniment, and blistering melodic lines simultaneously, occasionally utilizing throat singing and percussive body techniques to mimic traditional instruments like the saz, dombra, and tabla. By marrying modern jazz-rock improvisation with complex Balkan, Turkish, and Crimean Tatar microtonal folk traditions—often performed in challenging odd-meter meters such as 5/8, 7/8, 9/8, and 11/16—İzmaylov has earned worldwide acclaim as one of modern guitar's truest original voices.

Born in Fergana, Uzbekistan, to a Crimean Tatar family exiled from Crimea, Enver now lives in Crimea, where his music remains deeply connected to the history, resilience and musical traditions of the Crimean Tatar people.
