Biography

Born Michael Sedgwick on 10 January 1953 in Boston, Massachusetts, Mike Stern is celebrated as one of the premier jazz-fusion guitarists of his generation. After studying under Pat Metheny and Mick Goodrick at the Berklee College of Music, Stern secured a breakthrough gig with jazz-rock pioneers Blood, Sweat & Tears in 1976. He subsequently performed with drummer Billy Cobham before earning international acclaim in 1981 when Miles Davis recruited him for his celebrated comeback ensemble—with Davis famously nicknaming him "Fat Time".

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Stern cemented his status through tenures with Jaco Pastorius' Word of Mouth band and the Brecker Brothers, alongside launching an illustrious solo career on Atlantic Records. Renowned for seamlessly bridging bebop harmonic sophistication with blistering rock-infused overdrive, horn-like phrasing, and lush stereo chorus textures, Stern has earned six Grammy nominations and remains a vital pillar of contemporary electric guitar.
