Biography
Born on July 31, 1959, in Chicago, Illinois, Stanley Jordan is widely recognized as one of the most innovative guitarists in contemporary jazz and instrumental music. A classically trained pianist from age six, Jordan took up the guitar at eleven, eventually synthesizing the keyboard’s polyphonic capabilities with the fretboard to develop his signature touch technique (advanced two-handed tapping). This approach allows him to tap notes on the fretboard with both hands simultaneously—voicing independent basslines, complex chords, and melodic counterpoint all on a single instrument, or occasionally across two guitars at once.
After earning a degree in music theory and composition from Princeton University in 1981, Jordan busked and played regional circuits before breaking into global prominence with his 1985 major-label debut on Blue Note Records, Magic Touch. The album spent an unprecedented 51 consecutive weeks atop the Billboard Jazz chart, revitalizing Blue Note and cementing Jordan as a revolutionary technical and musical force. Over the decades, his work has spanned jazz standards, classical adaptations, pop-rock re-imaginings, and global fusion, alongside extensive work in music therapy with the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA).

- A dynamic band-oriented outing blending pop-jazz, funk, and fusion arrangements, notable for its covers of Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" and technical ensemble work.
- Cornucopia (1990)
- A diverse mix of solo performances, live trio cuts, and studio collaborations that highlights his versatility across hard-swinging jazz, contemporary fusion, and balladry.
- Stolen Moments (1991)
- Recorded with an all-star rhythm section featuring bassist Charnett Moffett and drummer Kenwood Dennard, focusing closely on classic bop standards and straight-ahead jazz aesthetics.
- Bolero (1994)
- A genre-crossing studio project for Arista featuring a 17-minute arrangement of Maurice Ravel's "Boléro," along with covers of Herbie Hancock and Jimi Hendrix.
- State of Nature (2008)
- Jordan’s return to major studio recording via Mack Avenue Records, featuring acoustic experiments, nature soundscapes, and intricate jazz arrangements.
- Friends (2011)
- An expansive collaborative release with guest appearances from guitarists Bucky Pizzarelli, Mike Stern, and Russell Malone, saxophonist Kenny Garrett, and bassist Christian McBride.
- Duets (2015)
- A collaborative acoustic project with guitarist Kevin Eubanks, showcasing stripped-back phrasing, interwoven melodic lines, and rhythmic chemistry.
Jordan is an iconoclast, a ground-breaker, an intellect, and one of those rare guitarists whose playing was decades ahead of his time. In 1985, his debut major label album Magic Touch, remained on the Billboard Jazz Chart for an unprecedented 51 consecutive weeks, a record that still stands today.
His version of "Lady in my Life" was a big hit in 1985.
Utilizing all 10 fingers of both hands, Jordan plays his guitar in his own unique style like a piano or a Chapman stick, a style as complete as no other guitarist before him.
