Biography

Originally from Sofia, Bulgaria, and based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Hristo Vitchev is an impressionistic modern jazz guitarist, composer, and educator. Recognized multiple times in the DownBeat Critics Poll "Rising Star on Guitar" category, Vitchev is noted for a distinctive sound that weaves modern jazz, chamber-like textures, European classical discipline, and folkloric elements into rich, lyrical soundscapes.

Vitchev leads several ensembles ranging from duos to quintets, frequently collaborating with Brazilian pianist Weber Iago, bassist Dan Robbins, and drummer Joe De Rose. Alongside touring internationally and delivering masterclasses and clinics, he has authored hundreds of original compositions as well as instructional publications on chordal theory, including the acclaimed text Between the Voicings: A New Approach to Chord Building for Guitarists.
