Guthrie Govan

The Ultimate Modern Guitar Virtuoso, Fusion Polymath & Transcendent Improviser

Biography

Born in Chelmsford, Essex, Guthrie Govan is widely regarded as one of the most complete and technically proficient guitarists in the history of the instrument. Playing from the age of three and entirely self-taught by ear, Govan first captured international attention in 1993 when he was named Guitarist magazine's "Guitarist of the Year" with his stunning composition "Wonderful Slippery Thing". He subsequently joined the prestigious faculty of the Guitar Institute and the Academy of Contemporary Music (ACM) and contributed legendary transcription work and columns to Guitar Techniques magazine.

Throughout the late 1990s and 2000s, Govan expanded his reach through tenures with progressive rock stalwarts Asia and GPS, followed by the 2006 release of his landmark solo debut, Erotic Cakes. In 2011, alongside bassist Bryan Beller and drummer Marco Minnemann, he formed the genre-defying power trio The Aristocrats. In addition to releasing celebrated fusion works with The Fellowship and Steven Wilson (notably on The Raven That Refused to Sing and Hand. Cannot. Erase.), Govan has served as the premier touring lead guitarist for Hollywood film composer Hans Zimmer's live orchestral productions worldwide.

Guitar Style & Virtuoso Technique

Govan's playing is celebrated not merely for blinding speed, but for complete fretboard literacy, tonal control, and total improvisational freedom across any genre:

  • Liquid Legato & Sliders: Seamless hammer-ons and pull-offs married to slides and position shifts, creating a continuous, horn-like linear flow across all six strings without pick attack transients.
  • Effortless Technique Synthesizer: Switches fluidly between strict alternate picking, multi-finger hybrid picking, multi-string sweep arpeggios, and percussive fretboard tapping within a single bar.
  • Advanced Harmonic Language: Capable of superimposing complex modal colors—melodic minor modes, whole-tone scales, altered dominants, and chromatic enclosures—over standard rock and blues progressions while retaining deep melodic intention.
  • Expressive Pitch Control & Bends: Surgical intonation on multi-step bends, pre-bends, and microtonal vocal inflections, complemented by tasteful manipulation of a non-locking floating tremolo bridge.
  • Signature Rig & Gear: Signature Charvel MJ / USA Guthrie Govan models featuring caramelized basswood/ash bodies, bird's-eye maple necks, custom Charvel/MF humbuckers, and a recessed locking tremolo with Tremol-No; paired with Victory Amplification heads (such as the V30 The Countess / Super Kraken).
